Today, we take a look at a promising new product, the Revopoint MINI 3D Scanner. At less than $800, it’s surprisingly affordable. But how does it perform?

A Brief Look at the Revopoint MINI 3D Scanner

3D scanning technology has come a long way and the Revopoint MINI 3D perfectly showcases the peak of its evolution. The scanner can render models with point distances of up to 0.05 millimeters while its single-frame precision goes up to 0.02 millimeters, making it one of the best models on the market at its price point.

If you’re looking to create 3D meshes with high precision, Revopoint’s MINI 3D scanner is certainly worth considering.

What’s in the Box?

When you order the Revopoint MINI 3D scanner, you’ll get two boxes: one for the scanner and another for the turntable.

In addition to the scanner, the bigger box comes with the:

  • Extendable handle that doubles as a tripod
  • Adapter that holds the phone and scanner
  • Blue tack

Setting up the Revopoint MIINI 3D Scanner

One of the best things about this scanner is it’s easy to set up.

Setting up the Turntable

For the turntable, snap the four pieces of the surface together so that the pattern in the middle forms a triangle. Then, attach the sticky pad on top of the turntable. Finally, attach the USB cable and plug it into your power supply.

Setting up the Scanner

Attach the USB cable to the rear of the scanner where the port is. There are two screws on the adapter to keep your connection firmly in place. The other end of the cable should be plugged into your computer.

Install the Revo Scan and Revo Studio Software

After your equipment is set up, install the Revo Scan software which can be downloaded from the Revopoint website or this link. Install Revo Scan and Revo Studio on your computer.

Scanning

You’re ready to scan! Use the bust that came with the package as your test object and place it on top of the turntable. The software will guide you on how far the scanner should be from your test object.

Other considerations before scanning include software setup. I set the accuracy on high, put the scan mode on features, and chose no texture and no accessories. I also adjusted the RGB camera brightness to manual and turned it up to 50. As for the depth camera brightness, I set it to 2.0.

These settings are based on my personal preference. You can figure out the best settings for you as you go.

Once you’ve got your equipment and software set up, press the play button to start the scan. You will see a 3-2-1 countdown before the scan starts.

How the Scan Works

While it’s scanning, you’ll see the 3D model come to life in bits and pieces on your screen. As the object rotates, the scanner will pick up more and more details.

You can have it perform more than one rotation on the turntable for a more detailed and accurate mesh.

When you’re done, the 3D render will have a point cloud or a set of data points to represent your 3D object. It takes less than a minute for the point cloud to be completely fused. You can then import the point cloud to work on it some more.

On the Revo Studio window, there are several tools you can use to refine your model. For example, there is a smooth tool that smoothens the point cloud for better results. There are also isolation and overlap tools you can experiment with.

When you’re done tinkering with the tools, you can proceed with generating the mesh. The mesh is ready to be exported to your favorite 3D software as an OBJ file.

Revopoint MINI 3D Scanner Review

When I used the bust as a test object, the results were impressive. It was accurate and captured fine details. I only had to do a few tweaks to get the exact results that I wanted. The tools that came with Revopoint’s software were very useful for this. Of course, if you really want to play around with your mesh, you’ll need 3D software like Blender.

I really like the Revopoint MINI 3D Scanner. The equipment allows you to scan complex objects that would take a lot more time to create if you were to use 3D software exclusively.

The price is also a big come-on. You get what you pay for and maybe even more. I’m super excited to see where Revopoint takes its scanning technology and what else it has in store for its followers.

Practical Applications of the Revopoint MINI 3D Scanner

Before the MINI 3D scanner, Revopoint scanners were not the best at making 3D meshes of small-scale objects. It’s good to see that the brand has made significant strides in improving its technology.

I can see various industries such as animation and production modeling taking advantage of the MINI 3D scanner. The Revopoint can create a quick scan of the characters which can reduce the time spent modeling by as much as 10 times.<.p>

The scanner can also render accurate CAD models that are consistent with real-life items. It can also be used in jewelry design and medical applications, among many others.

Conclusion

The Revopoint MINI 3D Scanner offers sufficient, small-scale scanning functionalities for its price point. It can create precise and detailed models in under a minute. Plus, the software that you use to import and refine 3D models is easy to use and has decent features.

Other models may be quieter than the Revopoint MINI but they are also more expensive. Overall, its hard to find a 3D scanner for under $1,000 that’s better than the Revopoint MINI 3D Scanner.
