Blade Runner Police Spinner - Coming soon!
96
Hey everyone,
I recently wrapped up a personal 3D project Ive been wanting to tackle for a while - a Police Spinner vehicle from Blade Runner! I built the model from scratch using Blender for the modeling and UVs, Substance Painter for the texturing, and then brought it into Daz Studio as a fully usable prop. I wanted to give you a behind the scenes look at it before it releases...
Modeling in Blender
I started by gathering as much reference material as I could: screenshots from the films, concept art, toy replicas, etc. Then I stumbled upon a Godsend! The BLUEPRINTS from the film:

It took many attempts to even get this far. I would get a certain amount done and it just looked wrong, the geometry wasn't smooth enough. So I had to start over (it was beyond fixing- or would just take more time to fix than to just start over)

I've never made anything with such organic shapes. I'm used to urban environments, so I had to learn to use a metallic material to help me get the surface smooth enough. That really took some work!

Wheels & Hover Gear: I wanted this model to be able to takeoff and land in addition to the doors opening. That means making the wheel able to extend and retract and the wheelpods need to be able to open up. That was a lot of fun to get working!
I was very intimidated by the amount of detail in the interior. In the Blade Runner world, all these knobs and wires and junk are called "kipple". If you ever see that word in my models, that's what it means

Lots of kipple on the interior here!

Once the model was finalized, I unwrapped it carefully in Blender keeping seams clean and minimizing stretching. I used multiple UDIMs for higher texture resolution, especially on the body and interior. I want this to be great for taking close up shots with characters inside

Usually, I make things very worn looking so I decided to make this "newish"...but then the dystopian sensibility in me took over and I also made a "worn/retired" version too. You can even change which version is on certain regions of the vehicle to further customize it. (Maybe yours just got new doors installed?)
I really hope you'll have fun with this prop. I LOVE playing around with it!
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions and, as always, please tag or PM me with your renders. I'd really love to see what you come up with!
All my best to you,

Looks great. I picked up a couple of your Blade Runners items from a different store and really love just how true to the movie they all are. Wonderful job all around. Thanking you for continuing to make these

Sun, Jun 08Thanks so much for saying that! I am learning, but I give it my all to make it as close as I can to the film. And thanks so much for your support- I really appreciate that! There's definitely more to come....environments, vehicles and props

Sun, Jun 08No worries, man. Credit where credit is due. I tried kitbashing them many many times when I was inexperienced in Daz and probably wore my 5 disc blu-ray set out frame by framing stuff.
Only thing I would throw on the pile is a perhaps more pared down set that's designed for rendering with people as the focus. The quadrants ones I found a little unwieldy to deal with as I had to zoom in tight when I added figures in. I don't mean it as a critique, it's just their scale is so enormous that naturally it can be a bit hard to work with. Regardless, keep up the great work
