Only one of the first objects I'll be using in my scene.
Trying new workflows, in this case Midjourney AI to blender and after that I'll probably send it to 3DS to do a final composition and render it with vray or unreal engine.

Very cool. This looks like it could go in all kinds of directions.
Is that an alien pumpkin head? Maybe it's a jack-in-the-box pumpkin that an alien is going to pop out of.
I'm looking forward to seeing how this plays out. Thanks for participating!

Thu, Oct 06, 2022eheheh Its a surprise for now, I'm still working on the various elements.
Just wanted to share the first output from the Midjourney AI to Blender experiment.
Just wanted to share the first output from the Midjourney AI to Blender experiment.

Ok, so I think I have my first entry finished but I have two versions.
Ended up finishing everything in blender and post processing on Photoshop.
I'll post both here but I'm not sure if I should make a new post.
Regular version:

Magazine Poster Version:

As you can see it is clearly inspired by Stranger Things, Alien and Goosebumps aesthetics.
Here are some details of the regular version (couldn't upload full res here):

Tue, Oct 11, 2022Forgot to add that everything was modeled in blender with recourse to Midjourney AI as a basis, except for the man that was taken from Chaos Cosmos.
That looks like a totally disgusting environment, but very cool!
Great work. I love the design and texturing. Thanks for participating in the contest.

Thu, Oct 13, 2022Thank you!
I will keep working a bit on this entry, but for now I am happy with the results. If something better comes up I will replace it.

It was pointed out on another post that there should be a wireframe picture of the entry, just to prove it is actual 3D and not fully AI generated, so here it is:

It is not very visible so I'm adding a shaded version as well

If necessary I can also add here the images that were generated by Midjourney.

Fri, Oct 14, 2022The owner didn't want to change the rules for this contest right in the middle of it, so they aren't required for this one.
However, they will be required for future contests, for the reason you stated.
But thank you for providing these anyway. Much appreciated!

Fri, Oct 14, 2022No problem! I was also thinking maybe some people would think it was fully AI generated, once I stated that I was using Midjourney as a tool, so I'm glad this clears everything up.
I have been changing the Lighting and Volumetrics a bit and I think I achieved a more dramatic result that works better, but I don't have time right now to render a full image right now.
Do you think I should make a new post for the final image and just re-label this one? This post was supposed to be just a Work In Progress kind of thing, but if you think I can just post under the thread, no problem for me.

Fri, Oct 14, 2022You can certainly post the final image in this thread. The judging is done by the final image.
I think it's cool for people to see the WIPs and progress along the way. At least it is for me.

Using AI for inspiration is one thing, this is pretty bad ass. Great work, can't believe I overlooked it.

I don't like me AIs, but i think they are irrelevant here and the magazine pulp idea and post-p is fantastic. Good work... and good luck with volumetric render, i hope you are using blender 3.3 and half-precision for that

Mon, Oct 17, 2022Thank you! Yes, I am using blender 3.3.1 in this case eheheh
I think AI can be used as a tool to achieve new things, if used correctly, so I can't think it is a bad thing. For me is like thinking blender or 3DS Max is bad.
I do agree it shouldn't be used as a replacement for a render in a render competition.

OK! I think I got it!
Changed a lot the environment and lighting and changed the position of the objects a bit.
Here is the final result.
FINAL IMAGE REGULAR:

I changed the lighting and volumetric fog as to give more enphasys on the "detective" character and the central pumpkin head. I also changed the color of the suit to make the detective a bit more "shadowy", and made the eyes of the central pumpkin a brighter.
Also added floating dust particles and made the "ground fog slightly green for a nastier look (a bit like the upside down in stranger things).
I also added a complementary lighting to the right with the complementary color of the green light that is on the left to make the scene a bit more intresting
FINAL IMAGE MAGAZINE POSTER:

Its the same as previously but I changed a bit the blending options just to make it a bit darker.
COMPOSITION CONSTRUCTION:

Just tightened the location of the various elements to give it some balance in the overall composition.
DETAILS:

Why I discover this artwork only now?
Mysteries of life.
Anyway, this is very very cool, but I have some questions.
1) So, you use Midjourney for references or also for something else? Not for blaming you or similar stuff, I'm genuinely curious.
2) For the textures of the pumkin-like environment, you use somethingh inside Blender (particular shaders, nodes, God bless..)? Or did you use software like Mari or Substance?
3)Did you use a film for the basic concept?
I am quite young, I have not been able to see many things.
I showed your work to my mother, she says it's very beautiful but it reminds her a movie that she saw as a young. So I'm very curious about that too.

I'll try to be as detailed as possible in my replies
1 - I used Midjourney for the base color maps of the objects. So i generated images with prompts like "halloween pumpkin head in the style of HR Giger" and then I chose the best of those, went to photoshop for some corrections, and passed them through ShaderMap or Materialize (to see what got me better results) so I could get displacement and bump maps.
After that I would model a base mesh, apply a material with the base image and do a UV mapping to the mesh so the base image would fall where I wanted it to.
After that apply some subdivision surface and do a displacement using the displacement map.
after that is time to go to sculpt mode and sculpt the object to your desired result. You can also paint the texture a bit for grittiness if desired.
2 - just plain Blender Principled BSDF shader and ramps or multipliers when necessary. I played it by eye from start to finish.
3 - No particular movie but I got inspiration from loads of old horror movies. The idea was exactly giving off a nostalgic feeling like you have seen this before but couldn't exactly say where. So I got inspiration from stuff like Goosebumps, Alien, Critters, etc. Also, of course from more recent stuff that pays homage to those like Stranger Things.
I am glad you and your mother liked it!
If you have any questions, please send me a DM and I can try to help you and show you the stuff I got inspiration from.

Mon, Nov 07, 2022@rev2019 - Your comment was reported, so I need to jump in here.
First of all, this is @j-ferreira's contest entry thread for the Horrific Render Contest.
Including WIP images and commentary about their workflow is encouraged, and usually appreciated by the community.
This definitely is not considered to be spam in any way.
Since this is an entry to the Horrific Render Contest, "ugly mother f**" would probably be considered to be a good thing, in this case.
@j-ferreira - Since this is your thread and an entry to the contest, I can remove this comment and subsequent replies, if you want.
I'll leave it up to you. Just shoot me a message if you would like me to do that.
It will not hurt your entry in any way if you choose for it to stay.

I think this can be left here.
No rules against being rude, but I wanted the input of a moderator so this wouldn't escalate into an insult competition.

Like, I mean, where the heck do you get talent like this? Can I buy some?
Great work - creepy as heck - weird stuff with the wet-look texture always makes my skin crawl

Tue, Nov 08, 2022Thank you! But I don't really think I am talented at all. This is the result of studying and working. The way to obtaining it is really just learning about color/lighting/composition and playing with that, after you learn that, the more technical aspects don't seem as hard.
Thank you very much. I was really hoping to get that horror "wet puppet" look! I'm glad it comes through.
