Group / Save surface selection from multiple objects (CLOSED)
216Is there a way to group / save surface selection from multiple objects in a scene to try out different shaders.
e.g.
Assuming there is tree, table and a character in the scene.
The idea is to select all the surfaces / selection and group them somewhere? and apply different shaders on them.
Did post this on the Daz Forum. No response there.
Thanks.

You can save individual materials for an item
File >> Save As >> Material(s) Preset
But I know of no way to 'batch save' the materials in a scene

Thu, Jan 05, 2023Not material actually, but just the selected polygons of a surface.
Scenario > select the polygons of the hand surface of 2 characters and apply different shaders.

Thu, Jan 05, 2023That sounds like you may need to create new material zones for a surface
That I don't know how to do
Alternately a geograft or shell over the area you want to effect
Again, that is beyond my current skills set

More like the effect in this image link.

Along with portion of the surrounding environment props.

@bikdingle's idea to create new material zones for a surface could work - if you want to affect "just the selected polygons of a surface".
It might be easier to create a geoshell, and then use an alpha / cutout mask to affect only the area you're looking to apply the effect to.
Like the Frost Hands Effect in the image you linked... I think you would definitely have to mask that.
I did something similar in this image, with the effects on their faces:

To "group / save surface selection from multiple objects in a scene" - you'll probably need to create Hierarchical Material Presets.
Depending on exactly what you're trying to do, you might not be able to do it with the function currently built into Daz Studio.
In that case, this product might help you accomplish your goals. It unlocks way more options for you, and works great.

However, I don't think it will work for a "portion of the surrounding environment props" also.
I think it only works for things that are in a particular item's "hierarchy" (like clothing and props parented to a figure).
You might have to rely on saving scene subsets for that.

Yes, geoshell with an opacity mask would work for a single object.
Scenario.
The character shoots a ray of ice / any rays, it strikes the env props too. So portion of the env props would have the same material as the ice.
I am just trying to keep it all within the Daz Studio ecosystem.
Will check out the product suggested.
Thanks.

Or shoot me a message if you want. I'm always up for learning new tricks.

Will do.
I am trying to learn the basic core elements of THIS system (shaders/lighting/effects) for predictable results, rather than do trial and error
Searching through Daz official forums if Daz Studio has an accessible editor scripting interface like in Unity
One could automate few repeated tasks / very simple utility functions.
The product you suggested hooks on to the core proprietary parts of the system.
