Vision of The Future - Doppelgnger (CLOSED)

Ever felt nostalgic about a place you've never been?
Or about a time you've never lived?

Or about an event that never happened?
Or about a self... that never was?

Mood + Environment

Victorian (and maybe also Edwardian) Era Fashion

Flightsuit

Ideas for scene composition and some early block-outs of the scene in DAZ Studio
Modeling WIPs:
I thought I'd mention that this project has been pretty much kitbash-galore for me, I didn't do a lot of modeling which saved me time.
I used ZBrush and Blender for extra modeling, mostly the latter. I used ZBrush mainly to fix mesh deformations, poke-throughs and all that.
The Jetpack
First version (scrapped)

Initially I wanted the jetpack to look like one of those Gravity Industries rigs, I did a look-test early on but quickly realized it's not going to work with the jetpack dude's pose, so I opted for a different design that frees up both his arms.
This other jetpack guy does appear in the render though as a background character, can you find him in the image?
The Final Version

It's a mish-mash of assets from different products, mainly from two products called the Hyoga Jetpack for G8F and Nanoflight Jetpack.
I added the flightsticks because I needed something for the jetpack dude's left hand to grip. In case someone hasn't noticed yet, the jetpack dude's pose is a mirror pose of the Victorian era guy, whose right hand is gripping the park bench armrest. The flightstick I snatched from a jetfighter asset called Alpha X.
The handlebar thing that the flightsticks are attached to is the only modeling I did here. Probably I shouldn't even call it modeling, I just used Cablerator to make it, super easy and quick.

The flightstick and its mirrored twin.

This leg thruster I borrowed from the Nanoflight Jetpack asset, I repacked the UV in Blender for custom texturing later.

Prepping the jetpacks in ZBrush.
The Outfits (CLO3D)
The Victorian Era Male

His outfit didn't take long at all to make. I already had a 3-piece suit plus a vest from a previous project, they were originally a tuxedo set, hence the bow tie. All I did was make the jacket's bottom longer, following the Victorian fashion references above.

Modeling and setting up the jacket buttons in Zbrush
The Victorian Era Female

I'm not an expert on Victorian or Edwardian or even Steampunk type ladies fashion, so I largely relied on the references I have. Taking into consideration how much of the lady is seen on screen from that particular angle, I made a conscious decision to not make the dress too complex. It's tempting to put on a lot of details on such a fashion piece but I stick to the old rule, only model what will be seen - and from how far. Details for details sake can end up as visual noise anyway and excess polycount. For example I didn't model the petticoat here because it's not going to be seen.

I imported a hard shell mesh as an avatar that holds the shape of the dress' backside, I think it's called a "bustle" if I remember my research correctly. unfortunately that part of the dress isn't visible in the render... oh, well.
The Flightsuit

I combined some ideas from the references above as well as some artistic liberties of my own. I had to bear in mind that the upper torso will be covered with bits and bobs from the Hyoga Jetpack asset and there will be jet thrusters slapped on the sides of the jetpack dude's lower legs as well. The back part looks pretty bare (no pun intended) because, again, I only model what I see. The forearms looked pretty boring so I added the forearm screen/terminal for both arms, borrowing an idea from one of my previous (fashion) contest assets (the short jacket).
The Futuristic City

Since it is the "future" part of the Vision of The Future piece, it is an important set piece of the image. The buildings all come from a product called "Utopia Cityscape Block" by Stonemason and another product called Cyberpunk Dark City by Dreamlight and Reedux Studio. The buildings are low-poly and thus aren't meant to be seen up close, which is completely fine in this case.
I decided to scale them to real-world scale (relative to the characters in the scene) and have them as actual background assets, for accuracy. This obviously makes the scene very large in scale, to the point where when you zoom out to see the whole set, the camera becomes almost unresponsive. Luckily I have a 3D mouse, which alleviates this issue.

A futuristic city isn't complete without a fancy public transit system, I think. I made kind of like a tube for a skytrain or monorail type transit vehicle that goes around the city. To be honest, it's actually an after thought; I was watching an episode of The Mandalorian season 3, it is the one where Jack Black and Christopher Lloyd guest starred, I'm not going to spoil the episode for those who haven't seen it, but there's a transit system featured in that episode that inspired me to add something similar to my futuristic city... I was like, hmm why didn't I think of that?
Anyway, I just constructed one of those tube structures in Blender, and in DAZ Studio I just instanced them as many as I needed.

Of course a transit system wouldn't be complete without the actual transit vehicle to transport the commuters where they want to go, so I created this super low-res train. It's going to be so far from the camera, probably not going to be in focus, and at worst probably not going to be noticeable, but I wanted something in the tube and it's good enough I think.
Lighting

Even though I composed all of the elements in one scene, once I was happy with the composition I divided the scene into 3 separate scenes that I lighted individually. The Jetpack dude is a part of the futuristic set so he shares the environment light with the set but he does has his own additional light set-up to separate him from the background. The Victorian Era characters have their own lighting of course, to make them distinct from the futuristic city set.
The 3 scenes are rendered separately and composited together in Photoshop.
Texturing
I think the only assets I textured are the garments I created in CLO3D. Most of the pre-made assets I used already come with textures, and when they don't or I don't like what the textures they're shipped with, I would just use some pre-made Iray shaders, which worked well in most cases here.

Texturing the Victorian male pants

Texturing the Victorian female dress

Texturing the flightsuit

Texturing the leg thruster to match the Hyoga Jetpack's texture. I recognize that camo pattern anywhere., could it be that the asset's author's using Substance Painter to texture it? Hmm.
Oh, and this little piece for the tree... I carved out a small section of the trunk and use an alpha map to blend this geo shell with the tree.

Credits (premade assets used - the products that contain them):

Well, all right. If you made it this far then thank you very much for staying. I hope it was helpful or at least entertaining.
Stay safe, stay healthy and have a splendiferous day!

This is outstanding, I didn't want to comment while the entry's were being judged.
This was my favourite in the comp. Because it didn't have the doom and gloom feel. Good choice not adding a story to it, it stood out even more and gives a sense and feeling of wonder.
That lighting drool lol. Makes it pop.
Always the attention to detail.
I'm surprised it didn't get a place.
Well done and thank you for sharing the wips, I enjoy reading them And it helps those who want to learn.
Top notch work

Tue, Oct 24, 2023Hey thanks for the thoughtful kind words, your comment really made my day!
Yeah, after all the hours I've put in I was very sad actually that this one didn't get picked. My critical self had a field day berating myself like there's no tomorrow with words like 'Nice going, genius! After all that work, those hours you could've spent on more productive things, like making money or getting dates, in the end it was all for nothing. You shouldn't participate in any contest, your stuff is a POS, everyone knows that, etc etc etc' I'm over it now though, kinda. LOL
But seriously, hearing comments like yours, knowing that my art affects some people in meaningful, positive ways, encourages me to keep going. Thanks. And I'm glad you find the wips useful, you and at least 3 other people on the site who have told me so... I'll try to share more wips for my future projects.
I've seen your gallery and may I say you're not so bad yourself, cool art style! Keep up the good work

I can't believe it! Not even an honorable mention? What's wrong with judging on RenderHub? Your work is awesome! It's certainly my favorite among all the others.
