Ny'ssa The Goblin Warrior (Working Title) (CLOSED)

THIS JOB HAS BEEN COMPLETED SUCCESSFULLY AND IS NOW CLOSED
Ny'ssa The Goblin Warrior (Working Title)

Just found out about this contest through Mike's (MH tutorials) Twitter account,

I'll try working as fast as I can and hope That I can make it in time.

My initial thought is to make a female half goblin half human warrior with a Bloody battlefield as the Backdrop (might have to adjust my expectations due to time)

with either a pissed off or a grinning Expression.

Thank you for the contest.

did some work on face still have far to go ..  trying to find balance between goblin and human.

want her to look a little pretty despite being a goblin. some one who is trying to find her place despite being shunned by both goblins and humans.

Working on fundamental body shape,

Elongated limbs and fingers due to half goblin linage and larger than most goblins due to half human genes.

not gonna work on the body too much since its going to be covered with armor and clothes later on.

Thinking of treating it like a concept art and skip Retopo due to my late entry.

while working on the character itself I'm also working on a weapon for the character.

I settled on a Repeating bolt Crossbow. it can still go a few different ways in terms of design.

I'll figure it out as the character develops alongside it.

Dear Farhan,

Welcome and good luck. Work thus far looks impressive.

Might I suggest (true to story line) you reduce the length/sharpness of her nose, and ear size ...

Why? Because as she looks now, their is no way she could be accepted into human society (looks 90% goblin); however if the ears were shorter and nose shorter/less pointy - she would be considered a bit human-looking to goblins ... and a bit goblin looking to humans ... thus caught between the two cultures/societies.

Just a suggestion - based on your storyline brief,

 Cheers,

 Rick.

[With much clapping applause to Mike - good teacher/good tutorials]

RxLnx  Thank you very much for taking the time and giving me some feedback, I really appreciable it.

I was also thinking about simplifying the features a bit,

Especially the ears, Right now I think they look too grotesque compared to the overall character design.

I'll keep updating as the process goes on.

I'm looking forward to more feedback and suggestions.

Dear FarhanKhan,

At your service - and it is a pleasure to watch clever people like you at work, as much as to appreciate your creations.

As mentioned to Fira (another artist here), by all mean listen to and consider aivice or suggestions given here (RenderHub - many very good and accomplished people), as you do in life and the community; however - always follow your instinct and heart - because therein lies your unique individuality.

Best wishes, stay safe and keep creating ...

Its been a slow few days in terms of progress,  but still made some progress on the crossbow.

still has a lot of work to be done on it.

I have been working on the character simultaneously as well (Switching between both to keep my mind fresh).

the weapon is a side cartridge loading semi automatic crossbow

the string is going to be operated by a spring lever.

on the character side

I am right now posing it in zbrush

after the body is posed the way I want I'll start working on the armor/clothes  etc.

The reason I am posing before the armor/clothes & accessories is because I want the movement (Pose) of the Character to be represented in the clothes.

considering I'm treating it as a collectible Model. hoping this process will be faster and provide with better looking results.

Dear FarhanKhan, (and thank you Foxy 3D ...),

As a suggestion - strengthen (thicken) the centre (middle) cross-bar of the bow, At the moment the arms would be too springy to have much power or distance.

In addition - your warrior (Ny'ssa) has Goblin arms and shoulders = 2x or 3x the strength of a human - thus could pull and load:

i). A much taunter/stronger bow (determined by the cross bar); and,

ii). do it with ease/faster (makes her extra formidable).

If you take a look at medieval crossbows, most had a foot stirrup in front of the bow's crossbar (centre front of the stock), because the bowmen put it nose down, then foot in the stirrup, to allow pulling with both arms to get the wire up to the catch. Had to be very strong to do that.

Yes there were some ratchet load cross bows, however they were generally too slow to be effective in serious battles.

Ny'ssa ... has the strength to load (pull the wire back) single handed, on a device that would have 50~60% increased armour penetration at normal range; with the same (as normal cross bows) penetration at 33% extra distance.

Maybe she has forged/etched mystic glyphs into the cross-bar ... then tells folks its magic/enchantment - help explain the greater effect at close range and same impact effect at long range ... if amongst humans. Might well say (glyphs): "This is Ny'ssa's cross bow - keep your thieving paws to yourself" (only in Goblin or Elvish - so the humans can't tell the difference).

One assumes being semi-outcast, she likely survives taking the odd mercenary or guard/escort work. Having "a magic cross-bow' would make finding work a lot easier.

Cheers (be inside you character/see the world/reality as she does),

 Rick.

Took your advice and thickened the front arch a bit

I think it looks good, what do you think

image

also did an alternate version

 image

but I don't thing it suits the overall design of the character and the environment.

previous design i think looks better with the character.

On the character side I am working with armor and cloths prototyping.

image

These are some basic design concepts, and a few hood variations.

still trying to figure things out, but making progress none the less.

As things are starting to click with each other, the work is getting faster.

as for the runes and stuff I also thought about them, will add things as i go.

A Story concept accessory :-

also thought that she wears a primitive  stone arrowhead tied with a string around her neck

the arrowhead of an arrow that took the life for her human mother ( her mother and she were living in the forest away from human society

because she gave birth to a half goblin child and kept and raised after escaping goblin captivity)  when the were found out by the goblins hunter pack and tried to escape.

it is also a remainder of her utter haltered for goblin kind

and a part of herself.

Arrowhead WIP from the last Post

Sat, Dec 05, 2020
RxLnx

Dear FarhanKhan,

Strengthened bow (upper) is good. The doubled variation would actually be weaker, and problematic to use - especially in the jungle/forest (get caught on stuff).

Cloak looks good. Expanding on the theme of putting "magic runes" on her bow cross bar - maybe matching runes (embroidery) could be on the hem and cowl-edging of her robe.

{ie, "Touch me or my robe and I will break all your limbs" ... albeit written in Goblin or Elven script ... so it looks very magic to Humans, and they notice goblin types seen scared to come to close - thus it must be magic.)

 Cheers,

 Rick.

Thank you for the feedback

I was also leaning towards the first crossbow Design,

I Liked the lever mechanism near the trigger to reload in the second design, so I might add that to the first design.

I'm also really enjoying developing the lore for the character as I make it, the idea of every thing a character has there has to be a meaning or necessity/use behind it.

kind of reminds me of old card games where every card (item/Spell or character) had so much lore behind them.

also will update on the character tomorrow need to do some minor adjustments to the base,

hopefully it will be done today, so I cam move forward with detailing.

Here are some Base Pose WIP's.

I'm really happy with the Pose, Gives a little Wild West vibes,

the hand in front will hold the crossbow,

the belt right now is a placeholder, its going to be replaced with a better one.

and fingerless Gloves. foot guards etc. as well as other accessories.

for the clothes I did retopo them in maya Using the uv Method

the cape was a bit of a hassle 2nd one I've ever made. for something so simple it sure is a pain to get it right.

Dedicating as much time as I can to this project, as my Niece shuts down my computer from behind me (2 Times So far)

Dear FarhanKhan,

Nice movement figures ... that gave me a thought as to how Ny'assa might fair in a tavern confrontation (close and closed/crowded combat).

Be patient - as I put the suggestion in context (Rick-talk: for another lengthy explanation).

There are devices (weapons) called 'fan knives' - a type of concealed blade worn in groups (fans) in leather bands of the inner forearm; fan shaped holsters under the arm and to the side of both breasts; or between the shoulder blades, immediately below the neck.

Ninjas use a type of flat fan blade (wrist or forearm holsters); however they are smaller and lighter (wounding more than killing, although in times past - were usually coated with poison).

The very first James Bond was played by an actor called Sir David Niven. Sir Ian Flemming who wrote the original James Bond books/stories was only a Naval Ensign (Admiralty Signals Intelligence) - where as David Niven, like the feted comedian and broadcaster Sir Arthur Marshall, was a British Intelligence Lieutenant Colonel. Niven was the operational commanding officer for the Mediterranean. He had two specialist extraction-assassination teams comprised of Corsicans and  Northern Mediterranean 'Gypsys' - selected for their abilities to kill quickly and silently with knives/thrown knives (both men and women agents). The fan knives described herein and body placement are based on those. Because they were so deadly and successful - agents from other (operational intelligence) commands were equipped and taught their use.

Primary use (forearm holster/under-hand) was as a flick-thrown knife, razor sharp, directed at the: eye or under-chin/throat ... effecting almost instant death (~15>20 seconds) in a general range of twenty feet or six metres.

Side-breast holster technique/open-straight-hand, was across the body start, then released once the elbow straightened ... aimed at a soft part of the body or neck (wounding) - general range to thirty feet or eight metres.

Spine/shoulder blade holster technique was overarm and straighten arm - release, aimed at the neck or mid chest/mid-back (heart - from either side) ... usually fatal (several minutes - depending on where it hit) ... effective range forty to fifty feet (10~12 metres) or chasing (bring down) fleeing target.

Now - as your figure is posed (above) with one arm out ... it would be the exact stance for the side/breast thrown fan-knife ... except all the fingers would be pointing forward at release.

That's what got me thinking - she's just let a blade fly straight into someone's back or kidneys (He's cactus/had-it).

Due to her cloak - the spine/back holster would not work; but she could have two blades on either inner forearm (underside of leather Grieve), as well as three each side - in a custom fan arrangement immediately behind her breast - on the central (wide) bra strap.

This would give her four quick throws - either side - then the survival rule was the two last blades (one at each wrist) were reserved for hand combat.

In a close fight, she could go from sitting quietly - arms folded - to taking down or wounding eight targets in twenty seconds, then having a deadly fighting blade in either hand.

Good way to ruin a party at the local tavern {laugh}, but she would be very popular with the local undertaker.

Blade dimensions: 9" ( 225mm) = 3" (75mm) handle & 6" (150mm) blade  or 10" (250mm) = 3.25" (82.5mm) handle & 6.75" (167.75mm) blade  ... weighted and balanced for flick or straight hand throwing. No guard between blade and handle. Handle was flat - rounded at edge - quarter inch or 6~7 mm (bakerlite, but hers could be wood and resin, or brass banded wood). Blade width is 1" /25mm. The taper to point starts around one and a quarter inch (30-40mm) from the handle, but is a long slow taper ... for reason of weighting and flyte (when thrown).

Handles were flat to aid concealment.

The size differences were simply because some people had larger hands (needed slightly more handle to avoid cutting themselves - if used as a fighting blade/dagger). Metal used was high carbon zone toughened iron (not steel) so the blades go through flesh/bone easier and are heavier (than steel - travel faster when thrown).

There were a lot of triple wrist holsters, but they made concealment difficult. The doubles (wrist) and back holster were preferred in occupied areas/day missions, because they were almost impossible to find in a pat-down (normal body search/check point).

If agreeing Ny'assa might like a weapons cache like this ... I suggest sticking with two per wrist holster and three on both bra strap holsters.

Note - Holsters - not scabbards, as they were unreinforced and unlined leather (pliable and no bumps). Scabbards are wood or metal framed (leather bound).

A "grieve" (or brace) is a metal, leather or boiled leather guard worn on the forearm (Knights/Roman/Greek armour), also worn by archers and bow men.

Archers and bowmen needed to protect their wrists from being sliced by arrow flights and the bow string. You would notice Archers and bowmen still use them today (same reasons).

Ny'assa would wear leather grieves on both forearms for the same reason - thus making it less obvious the inner side carried fan throwing blades. Would not stand-out or appear unusual to a stranger who did not know her/know they were there.

With such weapons - she could be standing, walking or browsing in a market - hands in her sleeves (like wizard 'Gandulf', a friar, monk or sage) - yet be fully armed and seconds from killing any one in close proximity.

Given she is between two worlds/races - she is very much alone and 'trust' is not really a luxury she can afford. The fan knives are her protection and social insurance against ambush or being caught off guard (which she never is).

I was thinking her runes on these blades could be: "I have got seven sisters - who will come looking for me" (in Goblin) ... which is very magical in the sense it conveys impending doom/injury ... if you try stealing her knives.

Problem with swords at close quarters/confine spaces is that only short blades like the Roman gladius can be used effectively, but cannot be drawn quickly. Boot dagger similarly is one blade and a single close contact weapon (no good when out numbered).

Anyway - throwing this in the mix for her character, because I had been thinking what she'd do in a tavern or marketplace with her bow over her back ... then saw your figure render which in perfect position for the end-motion of the throw (fingers straight).

Note. fan/throwing knives of this type do not spin in the air. They go straight, fast and hard to their target ... just like a cross-bow bolt.

I have one of the blades mentioned around somewhere. Original handle was broken when I got it (replaced with temporary wood). Will be on a desk or under papers somewhere - as I use it as a letter opener {laugh}. Will find it and take a picture for you - if you decide to go with the idea/suggestion.

 Cheers,

 Rick.

Thank you Foxy 3d & Rick for your kind words of encouragement, They mean a lot.

To sir Rick

I've read your Post multiple time just to get a full grasp of it. The amount of Knowledge you posses on this subject is truly extraordinary & Inspiring.

The idea of concealed fan Knives is really interesting. I can imagine the fight sequence in my head, Close quarter fights like the Raid Movies.

But the stage of progress I am in right now. What I'm imagining with the fan Knives and the holsters would require me to make too many changes to the cloths

including the time it would require to prototype a new Unique Original Holster and Knives Design would require a little bit of time.

Considering the time left, and other Responsibility's, making those changes would be difficult.

maybe after this version is over I'll make a ninja/Ronin Version as well.

Maybe I can add a few throwing Knives to the Belt.

As of right now(By the time I read this Post) I Have already made Progress in the Original Direction of the Character.

and I'm in the process of making Pouches, Viles & Potions For the Belt.

& thank you for writing it did give me a much needed Boost.

RxLnx

Dear FarhanKhan,

Correct decision - but keep in mind you have sixty days left. Suggest you target 30 days to full competition, then spend the last 30 polishing the figure.

"Tricks" - as mentioned before, one of my strengths is storyline and story/character building. In any creation or story - you need to be inside your character.

This does not mean the character is you - rather the opposite. You are trapped inside that body/mind - so you need help the character (using your experience/knowledge) to survive; on account if they get killed - so do you.

It is in your interest to think and plan ahead - then advise your host body/brain accordingly.

Ny'assa does not end with the competition winner announcement - rather her story and life are just beginning (is just the start). Where that is/goes is for later.

So - no time for the fan blades (now); however you are making 'pouches'.

There is a rumour (humans) Ny'assa knows a lot of magic and might be a (human) Sorceress that got cursed by a Goblin witch ... which makes her a bit ugly and a lot uglier temper-wise (short fuse) ... and there are magic runes on all her stuff (good as proof to local gossipers).

Thus they would not be surprised if the pouches included stun bombs, stink bombs,  fire bombs, wart-bombs, itchy bombs ... and whatever you can imagine.

In which case if she was feeling "nice" when getting annoyed/teased by folks in a tavern ... she might just toss a wart-bomb, then while they're all rolling around the floor with heaps of new warts all over - as she walks out the tavern door she might call-back: "Don't worry - they should fade away in a week or two..."

You are the author of this character and her life. You can create, weave and address  anything - always remember that and always use it.

Pleasure to help a little along the way. Ny'assa is and remains solely your creation (actually a nice person, but has an interesting sense of humour - maybe justified by her thinking "Well I didn't kill them, so they should be glad!")

Cheers,

Rick.

-Addendum-

Dear FarhanKhan,

In the event there is too little time to do 'interesting' pouches (that might enhance Thug's attractiveness to amorous frogs and toads); keep in mind the design and purpose of 'fan knives' were to be concealed, and allow assassins/agents to pass through military checkpoints/body searches - without being noticed/detected.

This means you do not need to show them (because they're hidden). First thing/time Thugs notice them, is as they're dying ... Dead men tell no tales.

Cheers,

Rick.

Rick you mentioned there's 60 days left, but isn't the deadline 15 Jan?

Tue, Dec 08, 2020
RxLnx

Dear FarhanKhan,

Perfectly correct = roughly sixty.  4~5 days leeway for unforeseen circumstances (like long lost Aunty comes to visit - folks put her in your room or she asks to stay with you, then either decides to play with your computer {after you said don't touch it}, or decides it would look better with a nice vase of flowers on top, but spills water in it while placing the vase - gets electrocuted and the family all blame you ... so you need move to the forest and run hot-wires off the nearest power pole ... to get back on your computer).

Could happen - Aunty might have Goblin runes on her underthings suggesting she brings utter chaos to otherwise peaceful lives; which was why she purchased the garment - thinking it was French script of an elite/exclusive Paris fashion house (laugh).

Point remains 60 days +/- 5. Time flies when you are having fun, or escaping Aunts.

 Closes Jan 15th.

 Cheers,

 Rick,

My apologies ... that is the last time I am paying $1.50 extra, for an extended calendar purchased from "Long-lost Aunt's Bargain Bazaar" !

Should have guessed you could not have 13 months in a year.

Sorry for the miscalculation and misdirection.

The shoulder straps look great.

They don't look out of place, and they certainly do add more visual appeal to that area.

Nice addition.

Sun, Dec 13, 2020
RxLnx

Perfectly OK - think about motorbike boots - top quality leather.

They are pull-on's because 'zips' can break, especially if you have a foot down/sliding to keep the bike from falling (Aracnid, Daggerwilldo or Daddio3D can tell you about those considerations).

You may notice they have straps that to others serve no purpose; however they are reinforcing straps for the exact scenario when the foot/boot/leather are under stress.

Ny'assa has shoulders three times stronger than human shoulders, bigger muscles and needs use the same quickly to reload automatic crossbow. Such actions would rip the seams of a normal coat - thus the straps (look good) are important and perform critical function.

Consistent with character and story = Yes (very).

Ohhh - there's a nice bush ... I'll just run and hide there instead (you cannot see me).

Cheers,

~R.

In the last couple of days I've been UV mapping, adding Some detail's here and there to the character.

Today finished with the UV stuff.

Now slowly moving towards shading, Texturing and figuring out the Over all presentation  of the character.

Don't have screenshots to share right now since every thin is between phases.

Progress good (a little slower than I'd like it to be).

But that's the thing with original character you always feel like you can do more, or enhance/Improve something.(This is why deadlines are necessary)

Hopefully will have something cool to show you soon.

Thankyou for the guidance and support so far.

To me The motion, The posture, The attitude, The Expression of a new character.

are all represented the best in this way.

Thank you for participating, and for the nice WIPs and interaction. It's been fun following your progress.

I'm just the contest host and won't be judging, but best of luck to you!

One thing though... Do you happen to have a larger single full-length image of her?

Don't worry if you don't. It's just that I do social media for RenderHub and would love to have a nice variety of images from the contest to post on Facebook and such...

Have a great weekend!

I shared the previous turntable video with few of my acquaintances, they said it was having some resolution issues.

I don't know if its the case here, But just to be safe here is a reupload without the issue( I Checked with them to make sure)

The older video is also up, that I posted in this thread on Jan 14.

Nothing changed Same Video just re-exported.

@dwindt Thank you so much.

Texturing & color Theory was my weakest points when I started working as an artist. but with practice I've gotten a little better.  so that means a lot

I was a little afraid in the beginning that the model wouldn't turn out great, since I wanted to do practical clothing rather than form fitting  type clothes.

but as I made progress I am glad that I stuck with It. I am really happy with the end result.
