Winter Girl Character (CLOSED)
Hello everyone,
here I will share my progress and work in progress images for the character challenge.
I'm creating a female winter character.
The concept and reference board is finished, I will start working on the 3D model now.
The full character is modeled from scratch (except for textures and sculpting alphas)
Software: Blender 2.81, Substance Painter, Zbrush
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jakob.scheidt/
Artstation: https://www.artstation.com/jakobscheidt
Good luck everyone!
I started blocking out the whole model with simple meshes.
The head is the only part that is more refined at the moment, sculpted in Zbrush, textured in Substance Painter.
Hey there. Welcome to the contest.
Looking good so far. If you happen to have your concept and reference board available, please do post it.
Other contest participants have been doing that, and it's been fun to see how the project began.
If you don't, that's fine too - it's not a required part of the contest.
Thanks for participating!
Dear Jakob,
Apology - I read/answer forum posts in sequence - thus had not seen this before.
Very interesting (and no pumpkins).
Suggest spending five minutes looking at some other contestant submissions here/below,
for reason of project explanations and interaction in competition/forum.
As mentioned - your work is unique, some 'quirky' (in a good way), with several exceptional creations.
Watching with interest,
Regards,
Rick.
Thanks for your messages!
Here is a part of my reference board, first I collected a bunch of images and used photobashing to create variations.
Then I drew more detailed designs on paper, maybe I will scan them and upload them later.
Dear Jakob,
Very good, and your words of encouragement to others.
Her outfit is excellent ... suggest you work in the bear claws (for authenticity).
Pleased to have you here. Very interested in watching you work.
Cheers,
Rick.
Continued working on the hair. I'm using Blender to simulate and render
individual hair strands and use the texture on transparent hair cards to
improve the performance. This is important, as I want to render the
model in a realtime engine and upload it to Sketchfab.
Dear Jakob,
Good and very clever (well thought through).
The majority of models/renders fail close inspection of the hair - due to the limitations of the original geometry.
Keep up the good work ... and if strolling around Paulin's forests - watch out for late season pumpkin* rollers (or take a shotgun),
Cheers,
Rick.
[*: I missed the 2020 festival - Cv19 lock-downs. Maybe next year, because I want to try-out the pumpkin kayaks - looks like great fun.]
Dear Jakob,
Excellent and very authentic.
May be a great shock to discover - might be some people who do not believe in pumpkin dinosaurs or kayaks ...
...so maybe is just imagination. {smile}.
Keep up the good work, enjoy life and have fun,
Cheers,
Rick.
Looking good Jakob ... Be mindful - methodological approach and persistence ... always defeat speed in races.
You are doing well following existing work regime and discipline. "haste = waste" (or if eating ... haste = waist).
Cheers,
Rick.
Today I created the boots for the character. Depending on the environment I can change the textures.
Zbrush, Blender, Substance Painter
Hi Jakob,
Looking good.
Was thinking the material pattern/swab used to make the necklet ... might look good as a trim on the coat (cuffs/central button-zip seam), and sides or top of the boots. Much of her gear is reminiscent of the tradition costumes of both indigenous deer herders (Baltic), and Yak herders (Mongolia). The common trim from collar (inner garments) - to coat cuffs, and boot seam - are present if you do image search for traditional dress of these two ancient cultures (still alive today).
Cheers,
Rick.
Hi Rick,
thanks for your message! I totally agree, I'm working on the clothing at the moment, until now it was just a first test simulation.
There is going to be a lot of traditional/cultural details included.
I will share some screenshots soon.
Jakob
Dear Jakod,
Happy to help. One of your methodological strengths and community good points - is that you are watching/studying the others contestants as they develop their character, plus offering constructive comment or suggestion (very good).
As such you will see several contestants ask for advice or suggestions ... like asking consultant. Foxy, I and others - who are not judges - are happy to provide/fulfil such requests.
This is the nature of several sections/forum areas at RenderHub (helping, teaching and encouraging artists), and an important functional reason for the site to exist.
Some may wonder why more of RenderHub's best teachers are not helping/commenting.
Simple answer - They are the judges, so not appropriate to comment/advise where the same might be construed or interpreted as giving favour.
Watching - Yes. Helping (cannot - to preserve integrity and fairness of contest).
Cheers,
Rick.

this is looking really great
Working on the weapons for the character.
I plan to create more texture variations for renders in different environments (snowy etc.)
I look forward to rigging and posing this character now that most of the modeling and texturing is finished.
Also starting to think about the environment and the posing/storytelling. I hope I get to model animals for the scene too.
Marmoset Render
Moving forward. I'm still adjusting the textures of everything.
Any feedback is appreciated!
Almost ready for the final renders.
I'm planning to render a turntable animation as well, I hope this will be rendered until the deadline
After optimizing the geometry of some elements I also want to upload it to sketchfab.
Winter Hunter Character finally done!
It was a pleisure to design this character and create it in 3D, I also enjoyed seeing the entries of other participants evolve in this forum. Very inspiring!
Here are my final renders.
Everything except for the environment was created from scratch, using Blender 2.8, Zbrush, Marvelous Designer and Substance Painter.
A goal for me was to keep the polycount below 100k to be able to upload it to Sketchfab and use it in realtime engines. I will share a link soon.

Let me know what you think, and good luck everyone!
I rendered a turntable animation, you can watch it on ArtStation:

Oh wow! She turned out amazing and the final renders are awesome.
I'm really impressed by how you were able to incorporate many of the styles from your original references. Great work!
Thank you for participating in the contest. I'm just the contest host and won't be judging, but I wish you luck!
I uploaded a low resolution version of the model to Sketchfab. You can download the model there for free too!
