NOT Volumetric (CLOSED)

Thought I would post here to share a little trick for achieving a volumetric smoke effect for still renders without having to obtain .vdb files or settling for ground fog which is kind of - well "bleh". For me this started with an attempt to approximate another famous Stevie Nicks shot:

Not having several thousand packs of cigarettes and a metric ton of marijuana or indeed a stadium in which to smoke it all while listening to a live Fleetwood Mac show, I opted for C3Digital Studio and Cherry Angelou. Which is fine. After getting the pose, camera angle and lighting about right I added a cube around the character. I then copied the surface from "The Grateful Scrim" (from C3Digital Studio) onto the cube, and adjusted the size and position of the cube and dialed down the cutout opacity of the cube surface to -- let me check -- .0025.

I was surprised at how many options this gave me. By playing with the position and shape of the cube in the x,y and z axes, and also the color of the "smoke" as well as how close the nearest cube surface is to the camera, I got something that frankly I liked even better than volumetrics for this shot:

Which I liked, because it emulates air currents due to the cutout image (the plaster one from C3Digital Studio). All that was left was to retro the image which I did in Photoshop using Raw Camera Filter:

That's it. Maybe this is an old trick that I never twigged to because frankly, I don't fool with smoke effects in my shots at all but this one called for it. However I was glad to find it.
Let me know if you end up trying this. All you need is a primitive and a good BW cutout image to do it. I won't tell you that you have to use C3Digital Studio, but I will say that without it you won't get that nifty ass-kickin' fresnel light that you see over Cherry's head.
