This is so good!
But if I’m not mistaken this was not made for the challenge. This was made 70+ weeks ago(almost a year).
And if I’m not mistaken the creatures or characters needed to be created just for this.
It’s pretty sick not the less

Mon, Oct 28, 2024Hello, thanks for checking out my account. My concept art was ready last year. And only a rough dummy was in progress.
But all the 3D works and texturing was done very recently like 1 week ago. I finished making reel 3 days ago. I saw the advertisement of this contest from Siggraph 2024 in July. And it motivated me to make complete work and deliverables for this contest. I have been aiming to submit my work to this contest and it has been my pivot since I saw this contest, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to finish this work.
I am a character artist and have many concepts and ideas ready always. I don't think using my original ideas I have come up with can be a problem. This contest is open to all kinds of concept and I thought this contest was perfect and wonderful to showcase my complete work. I really appreciate that I was able to discover this opportunity.
Thank you

Mon, Oct 28, 2024beautiful design. but i think that rule is there to ensure everyone has the same amount of time to conceptualize and make an original character specifically for this competition. i did check out your Instagram and i notice that you posted this character sketch on the 11th of March 2023 a year and a half ago and said it was for your thesis. your cosplay is really impressive but was finished by the 8th of May 2023 and on the 18th of November 2023 it looks like you made a pretty good start on the 3d sculpting for this character. you say you did "all the 3d works and texturing" 1 week ago but on the 18th of september which is over a month ago you posted this exact character in an instagram post even down to the exact facial expression just in a different colourway. again it is a great design but it is breaking the first rule of this competition that was in bold on the original post:
This is a 3D modeling contest requiring a completely original character that you have created for this contest.
which is not very fair on the other people who have only had 2 months to design and create their characters

Mon, Oct 28, 2024Hello, thank you for your attention.
My work was still in progress a month ago. It was fully done last week on Thursday Oct 28th, including texturing, lighting, rendering, compositing, and making a reel. It hasn't submitted to any other contests and to market. My complete work was submitted to this contest for the first time as soon as it was done.
Up to our judges
Thanks

I think might not be fair tbh, but still. Up for the Judges

Wed, Nov 13, 2024Hi! I think I need to clarify what I thought. It is clear that the concept art was ready last year. I didn’t intend to hide that. You can see my concept art posting even on my website. The truth is that Roro Son is my original character I made from the beginning.
I thought it would be fine to submit the final work for this contest even if the progress started earlier, as long as the final work was not submitted to any other contests or markets for other purpose. To me, the contest description didn’t clearly mention that all works need to be started when the contest starts. Also, many contests require people to submit works that haven’t been submitted to other contests, so I interpreted this case as the same way.
Also, my work is new. This was newly showcased to this contest. During the last 3 months, I did my best to infuse a life into my character that was living in my brain. I knew RenderHub already. But when I saw their contests before, I wasn’t ready. I was looking forward to having another chance to submit my work to the contest thrown by RenderHub. I was so glad when I saw this opportunity again. I hope there’s respect.
Thank you.

"To me, the contest description didn’t clearly mention that all works need to be started when the contest starts."
It clearly states
"This is a 3D modeling contest requiring a completely original character that you have created for this contest."
https://www.renderhub.com/3d-contests/character-design-contest
I think many would interpret that as stated, an original character that you have created for this contest including the concept. Yes you may have an old sketch or idea that could suit the event but not a full design. I have a tone of old figures I could have pretended to be new.
However this is a good opportunity to introduce and showcase your work well done for that. You have some great skills, I wish you good fortune in your creative endeavours.
It is disingenuous to say you made an original character for this event. However you word salad your response. The simple question is did you make this character including final concept for this event? No the final design is a year and half old.
Maybe I am wrong and concepts from years ago are fine as long as the build and production was done recently.
No disrespect is intended, even though respect is a thing that is earned and not automatic. I can be respectful and speak my mind here on RH as much as I do when involved with any production. One of the many great things about RH.
I am a little "picky" I'm sure a few other people feel the same about interpretations of the rules. Being honest a lot of other people have invested a lot of work into entering this event with a NEW and original character. I don't care who wins as long as we get an honest result that was made for the event. I'm sure most people would be satisfied with that.

Wed, Nov 13, 2024Well, I shared what I understood about the contest entry.
It might be that I misunderstood. But in my opinion, using old sketches or recent sketches to create characters for the contest was artist’s discretion. If you had many sketches you have made before, I think you could use them for 3D production this time. Anyway I am not a decision-maker on it.
I wish you the best of luck and thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Sun, Nov 17, 2024I wasn't going to weigh in, but this is just a really unfair misrepresentation.
The issue isn't that you were "using sketches" of a character from before the contest, the issue is that your character was actually modelled before the 18th of November 2023, over a year ago, as per your own Instagram, specifically for your thesis, not for this competition.
You also used the exact character with different textures for a flier for "Fake and Gay and AV Club SF" on your Instagram on the 18th of September, a month before posting anything to this competition. So as per the rules, which were clarified on the FAQ page to say:
"2. Entries must be new original work specifically made for this contest.
This means you can not use a previously created character as your entry."
Your character was modelled over a year ago, not since August 1st. It has been used both for your thesis, and for a flyer, not created for this competition. And I think it is unfair for you to imply you only "used sketches" you had done before August the 1st when the entire character was modelled and being used for other things by then.
As cool as the character is, of course, it is not fair to enter in a competition like this, at all.

Sun, Nov 17, 2024I completely agree with you. I have many WIP projects and I could upload any of them here as if I were making a new one, but it's not fair, it's not challenging And when we all have to do everything from scratch, which is pretty time consuming, someone can use such a cheat. And I am offended by it.
I also agree that the character is great, but it's unfair and insulting to the participants who did everything honestly.

Sun, Nov 17, 2024Thank you! It's difficult to speak up about because I really don't want to bring anyone down, in any way, especially if it was down to a misunderstanding of the rules, but at this point it's really just not fair to everyone who put their all in, and managed to follow the rules, and it was my last straw when I read they're being dishonest about it only being "sketches".
This wasn't sketches, nor a WIP (which would have been bad enough), this character was done for a literal thesis project over a year ago, and used for a flyer months ago, just so obviously and undeniably not made for this competition, and clearly finished ages ago.
It's also a shame because it would've been great to see what this artist would've created in a fair competition.

There was no rule stated that participants have to start all of the process including concept art when the contest starts. Just the application period was for 3 months. I didnt think that this was a 3 months time limit competition until somebody left a reply on my post. My Roro character was properly showcased to the RenderHub contest first.
And again, my work is new. I shared the renderfarm records to show when this project was prepped to showcase. Modeling was not done last year. I didnt have even costume. This character was what I have always wanted to make. I decided to go through the rest of the progress of this character for this contest, and to showcase this character for this competition since I saw this competition’s advertisement at the Siggraph 2024 in Denver in July. For the last 3 months, I made so much progress. I spent most of time in front of the computer, not sleeping.
Modeling progress was completely done in September. I did texturing one by one in August when single prop was ready. I finished texturing at the beginning of October. I had to fix models for some parts, and added more props while texturing. I did shader-making in Maya, while texturing at the same time. I started the rendering process in October. I had to fix some shaders, texture maps, and lights at this time. I started making a reel during the end of October. Many of these processes overlapped in time.
I thought I had to post my work as a complete presentation when it is done. After uploading my stuff, I realized that some people posted progress as it comes. I didnt know that was possible cause I havent seen that kind of posting method. It doesn't mean that my process was done long time ago.
I did my best to meet the qualifications under my understanding.

I feel like you are forcing my hand here, and I want it on the record that I wish this wasn't happening :') I feel horribly awkward and partially like this is not my place, but as someone who put a lot of work into my characters, and know a lot of other people did too, without just using whole characters we had already made, I think it's important in the interest of fairness and integrity to show why so many people are making the same remarks.
Here are the proof shots from your Instagram page @na_roda.
Showing:
Your post from 8 May 2023 of your character cosplay, finished.
Your post from 18 November 2023 of your character modelling, substantially done.
Your post from 18 September 2024 of the character, with the same facial expression, in different textures, used for a flyer that is nothing to do with Renderhub nor this competition, posted prior to you starting this thread on Renderhub, proving the character was finished, rendered, and used for something else entirely before entering here.

And a repost of your thumbnail which I hope will become the main photo again as it is last:

Mon, Nov 18, 2024Oh mate! I completely understand where you're coming from, and I share your views on this situation. I, too, never wanted things to get so complicated, but unfortunately, it seems there's no way to avoid it now. Honestly, it’s difficult for me to even express these thoughts.
What I find particularly concerning is that Roda used this character for the 'Fake and Gay' flyer, even though she was aware that it doesn't align with the contest rules. At the same time, she seems to be positioning herself as unaware of the issue. Our concern isn't with reusing the original concept, but rather with the attempt to present the situation in a way that doesn’t align with the facts. From Roda's Instagram, it's clear that this character was started (in 3D) quite some time ago, so it's hard to see how there could be any misunderstanding.
I feel sorry for Roda, but I cannot stay aside
