About time for a new PC
171Waiting on the Nvidia rtx5000 series to come out.
I've found I tend to kit bash and my scenes can get pretty heavy. My main problem is Vram so as an example, I'm wondering if Daz can recognize a 2 stack of 4060's to get up to 32 gigs of Vram or if I'd be better off going with the new 5090 which is suppose to have 32 gigs of Vram.
Basically just wanting to know if there is any benefit of stacking 2 of the same cards for Vram for the Iray render engine in Daz.

Back in the day I built a PC using two GTX460 cards thinking that combining them would give me double the CUDA Cores and double the RAM.
Unfortunately this was not the case. There was a special cable that connected the two cards directly together, and doing so did indeed give me double the amount of CUDA Cores, but unfortunately it didn't double the RAM. It could only see the RAM of one card. As time went on I vaguely recall reading something about the limitation being lifted and that it should now see the total RAM of both cards, but by that time I had made changes so I cannot confirm whether it works or not.
I think it probably does though.

The Iray engine in its full version supports multi-GPU but not the Iray Daz version which is a "custom" version.
The multi-gpu render will not work unfortunately.
If you have big V-ram needs, you will need a big card.
Either the Ada RTX pro cards with monstrous V-ram capacities but lower frequencies (to reduce their heating as they are supposed to work in series), with a pharaonic price. Maybe look at second-hand but be very careful.
Or take the next 5090 which according to rumors will have 32gb of V-ram for a "reasonable" price compared to the "mammoth" Ada Pro and with higher frequencies.
In my case, an RTX 5090 will arrive in my park in January (if there are no shortages and no scalpers etc.), it will be my main work tool.
Apparently Nvidia will release a "new technology" on this generation, we'll see.
If I'm talking bullshit, correct me. XD

Mon, Dec 23, 2024Thanks!
You pretty much confirmed what I was thinking but wanted to verify.
Just a hobbiest so I'll pass on the Ada's but I am wanting to make sure my next PC can handle most of the BS I throw at Daz without my pc slowing to a standstill so I'm leaning towards the 5090 also.

Mon, Dec 23, 2024The problem is that the content is becoming heavier and heavier, it goes quickly, the V-ram budget is quickly filled...

Mon, Dec 23, 2024Yeah, which I'm fine with for main characters and such but can be a pain when going for a city block scene that doesn't resemble a last person on earth scenario.
I'm also wanting to look into what the requirements are for Blenders render engine. I've seen some really nice outdoor environments for Blender but not sure how well a G8 figure would look actually standing on a beach or such with environments made for Blender.

Mon, Dec 23, 2024If you want to integrate Blender assets into Daz, you need to do a minimum of work upstream, scale, check if the material zones are ok, integrate everything into Daz, put the textures back and maybe optimize. Switching from Cycles or Eevee to Iray will inevitably require adjustment, the same goes for the reverse from Iray to Cycles/Eevee.

Mon, Dec 23, 2024I'd most likely be moving characters and indoor environments from Daz to Blender if I decide to start using Blender for renders.
Not 4060s; but a pair of 3090's via NVLink have been reported to work over in the DAZ forums. If you just want a lot of VRAM, this may be the way to go.. From what I can see the new 5090 will draw about the same power as 2x3090's. NVLink was scrapped after the 3xxx series. Here is an article I found going over some of the pros and cons: https://blenderartists.org/t/should-i-have-dual-rtx-3090-connected-via-nvlink-or-one-rtx-4090/1453308

I think that 'NVlink' thingummy you just mentioned is probably what I was thinking about if it involved a ribbon-like cable to physically connect the two cards together.

Mon, Dec 23, 2024Yes that's right, the 3090s still have the NVLink physical bridge.

Mon, Dec 23, 2024I didn't even realize the 3090's were 24 gig. After reading the comments and such from the link you provided, think I'll just stick with the 5090. Considering how much I've been able to cram onto my 4060, I think 32gigs should cover most of my insanity. Hopefully?

Yeah that's the one, I remember the name now - "nVidia Bridge".

nVidia rendering capability is limited to the cuda cores in tandem with the physical VRam on board the card. The RTX4090 is a powerhouse in this regard, but the specs on the RTX 5090 are double that! My mind is blown here. Having two cards RTX cards on a server board works by using the onboard Vram effectively doubled while doubling the number of cuda cores in parallel processing.
