Scifi Landing Pad WIP
3D Render by VulcanStarDrivesMostly posting 'cause I'm wondering if this is appropriate to post in WIP/critique forum. I'm hopping through basic 101 stuff, especially with textures, hoping to get a few pointers, and not really sure if that's ok or not over there

Figured out how to bump up export to 8k in substance, but some of those meshes can be measured in football fields. A bit like too much toast and too little butter.
I could divvy the meshes up some more and (I think?) use channels, but there's a whole list of "what the hell does this do" and "that looks like it might be important" that's developed so I think I'll do some more reasonably sized photography vignettes instead, to try and knock that list down a bit

I dig the shape. But I'm puzzled by the lack of humanoid character egress/ingress points. Land, get off the ship, and then what? Yr kinda stuck there within the fences.

And this IS the sort of thing I like seeing in the WIP project forum thread. It is the kind of thing I would certainly put there.

Wed, Feb 19Thanks for the vote of confidence, I'll be doing that for sure in a week or two, hopefully
@Lukon I kind of cut it down massively because I wanted a "simple" shape to cut my teeth on textures, but I'm kind of starting to think I should have just started with a vase or something lol. The orginal idea looked a bit like this

basically 6 pads around a center with all kinds of infrastructure, dedicated to moving freight extremely quickly, a sort of fantasy galactic intermodal roll on roll off station for container freight. I was even considering freight elevators in the middle of the pads-cargo ships drop their containers directly on them and said containers vanish under the pads, for processing or further trans shipment on trains or trucks
I went with this as a temporary measure to make it as easy as possible to setup textures (I'm pretty ignorant here lol)

and I'm realizing I've bitten off a lot more than I can currently chew, and should absolutely be doing something much simpler to tick off those "101 texture mapping" boxes
I'll certainly revisit the scifi stuff on some level, it's why I'm here, I want to make stuff like that

Fri, Feb 21Looking good, don't give up on it. Working on huge models is tricky inside daz, I sometimes scale the model down to 25 percent including the genesis figures. It helps me to navigate and light better. Scale it all back up to normal size when it's finished.

Sat, Feb 22Thanks! that sounds like really good advice for big models. Been going through the entry tutorials for substance-there's a lot to chew on there and I'll be rethinking how I'm approaching stuff, and I'm quite encouraged.
