Tue, Jul 15, 2025In Vermeer's paintings, and in other Dutch masters of his century, the window has rather a closing function in its following ambiguity: it brings in a codified way the light coming from the left, and allows to create an off-screen when the character of the scene looks towards the space it offers. However, this landscape is hidden from us, the angle of view of the painted scene often only allows us to perceive the edge of the wall of this window, this accentuates the feeling of intimacy of the scene to which we are witnessing in a privileged way, as here, almost hidden by the curtain which introduces the space of the room.
Encore une belle interprétation et un beau jeu de miroir ! J'aime bien aussi l'opposition entre le meuble de toilette, style des maisons sans eau courante, avec le chauffage central !
