Article by Yuri Ilyin
This week in the 3D world is marked by both reflection and innovation. The passing of legendary Hollywood makeup artist Greg Cannom has made headlines, while Daz3D unveils major product updates and a brand-new store. Meanwhile, Movella introduces Xsens Animate 2025, adding to the wave of exciting developments shaping the industry.
SFX Makeup Legend Greg Cannom Passed Away
The SFX community mourns the passing of Greg Cannom, a legendary Oscar-winning SFX makeup artist.
Famous for his work on such films as Bram Stoker's Dracula, Mrs. Doubtfire, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button he won the Academy Award four times. His work also earned him two Saturn Awards for The Lost Boys and Benjamin Button.
Unfortunately, Mr. Cannom experienced major health problems recently. In 2023, Variety reported that Cannom's friends had set up a GoFundMe page after his major health issues had led to soaring medical bills.
Aside from his work in the major movie productions, Cannom also rendered makeup for late '80s series 'Werewolf', '90s-era 'The Flash', and as per Deadline, NBC's original finale of Will & Grace, for which he received one of his five Emmy nominations.
His work also extended into the musical arena, where he crafted looks for Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' video, and Ozzy Osbourne's 'Bark at the Moon.'
His final work was on the set of 'The Eyes of Tammy Faye' (2021) where he worked on co-prosthetic makeup.
Xsens Animate 2025
Movella has released Xsens Animate 2025, the latest version of its motion-capture software designed for use with the Xsens range of inertial mocap systems, aimed at game development, animation, and visual effects.
The update introduces separate male and female anatomy models, using body proportions more typical for male and female subjects - primarily hip and shoulder widths, and placement of the center of mass. Additionally, the curvature of the spine is now tracked more accurately.
The software's user interface was also reworked, simplifying navigation, making it possible to access key tools more quickly. Xsens Animate is only compatible with Windows 11 and is rental-only.
thinkingParticles Hits Version 7.4
Cebas Visual Technology unveiled thinkingParticles 7.4, the newest version of its particle effects and multiphysics plugin for 3ds Max.
The update extends the product's own scripting language ME-L, introducing 160 new functions for manipulating meshes, enabling edge subdivision and dynamic remeshing.
Besides, the new update adds a SplineForce node for guiding particles along splines.
thinkingParticles 7.4 is compatible with 3ds Max 2024+ including the 2026 version, and available on a rental-only basis.
