Blender artists gain a valuable tool with the release of Mesh Cleaner 2 for one-click model cleanup. Epic Games offers a treasure trove of 117 free medieval dungeon assets. In a supportive move, JangaFX extends a helping hand to recently laid-off CG artists with free six-month access to their simulation software.
No Strings Attached
Sbastien Deguy, founder of Allegorithmic, and until recently a VP at Adobe, has disclosed his new venture. It is 'Sans Strings Studio', a digital puppetry firm that will be creating content for animation and gaming.
Joining him is tech artist and VR creator Ryan Corniel.
The new company has received venture capital funding from no less than Andreessen Horowitz.
Deguy also mentioned in his post at LinkedIn that he's going to produce 'content: stories, books, essays, music, animation, games - and even wine!'

A New House-Cleaning Tool for Blender
VFX artist Rob Dickinson, aka Decoded, has released Mesh Cleaner 2 for Blender, an updated version of a tool to fix errors with 3D Models 'in one click'.
According to CGChannel, the tool is a Python script targeted primarily at cleaning up 3D scans (they routinely require such treatment). But it can be used with any other model.
Mesh Cleaner essentially packs the whole range of Blender's native geometry-cleaning tools into one UI panel.
Its key features include identifying and removing doubles, converting triangulated mesh into quads, fixing flipped normals, checking and filling holes, as well as removing loose geometry which is critical for photogrammetry scans.
The new version adds the option to remove unused materials from objects, as well as to unparent and remove empties and to detect overlapping faces - for manual removal.
Since the tool is available via Gumroad there is an option for a voluntary donation.
Going Medieval with 110+ 3D Assets
Epic Games released 117 free assets for creating a fantasy-style medieval dungeon environment.
Since it is a promotional action for Epic's new online marketplace Fab, the assets will be free until May 20, 2025.
Produced by Howard Coates, this is a modular collection of realistic dungeon assets, comprising 67 modular pieces and 50 props, as well as a seamless wall material. It also includes poses for skeletons.
The package is instantly available for both Unreal Engine, Unity, Blender and in .FBX and .OBJ formats.

JangaFX: To the Rescue
JangaFX, the developer of simulation tools - EmberGen (real-time smoke and fire simulator), LiquiGen (fluid sim) and GeoGen (terrain generator), offers to lend a hand to the CG artists laid off over the last several months.
The industry suffered a wave of closures that affected even some high-profile studios. A lot of talented workers - tens of thousands, actually - lost their jobs, and now face uncertainty. Some investors and industry analysts believe that the video game industry will fully recover in 2025 and 2026 but it is far from being carved in stone. Even though the peak of layoffs seems to be left behind by now.

JangaFX announced that the company is willing to grant the recently laid-off professionals access to their tools free of charge for 6 months. Armed with simulation tools, the artists will have time to build their new portfolio and reaffirm their skill level for their future positions.
The recently laid off artists from the games or film industries are encouraged to email to layoffassistance@jangafx.com (sans the brackets) in order to secure their licenses.
