This Week in 3D: Allegorithmic Founder Departs, Lumion & Marvelous Designer Updates

Article by Yuri Ilyin
This week in 3D, we've seen a mix of significant changes, innovative tools, and even a glimpse into the potential for perceiving new colors. From a major departure at Adobe to updates in key software like Lumion and Marvelous Designer the industry continues its dynamic evolution.
Allegorithmic Founder Leaves Adobe
Sebastien Deguy, Founder of Allegorithmic and creator of Substance 3D suites, announced his departure from Adobe, where he held the position of VP and Head of 3D & Metaverse.
'After 30 years of unwavering, all-consuming involvement in the world of computer graphics, texturing and more generally 3D, Im closing this chapter of my career and life', he wrote on LinkedIn.

Allegorithmic started in 2002; its earliest products included procedural texture generation tools and later plugins for Photoshop and After Effects. Today, it is best known for the Substance suite of material-authoring software, namely Substance Designer (now Adobe Substance 3D Designer) and Substance Painter (now Adobe Substance 3D Painter).
Substance 3D Designer is a procedural material authoring software for creating high-quality, photorealistic materials using algorithms and noise textures. Robust, stable, and almost infinitely expandable, Designer has become a de-facto industry standard.
Substance 3D Painter, which Deguy calls Allegorithmic's masterpiece, is less technically-oriented than Designer, but is extremely capable and rather intuitive.
In January 2019, Adobe Inc. acquired the company to integrate its 3D and immersive design with Adobe's Creative Cloud tools as well as expand Allegorithmic's Substance 3D software.
Substance 3D Designer software won the Academy Award for Technical Achievement in 2023. Substance Painter, in turn, was also used in the Oscar-winning short film Mr Hublot and won an Emmy Award in 2024 in the Engineering, Science & Technology category.
Sebastien Deguy did not disclose the reasons for his decision to leave Adobe. Hinting on the 'next adventure', he is yet to specify the details.
Lumion 2025.0 Is Out
Lumion has released the new version of its real-time renderer, introducing AI-based upscaling feature, as well as support for ray-traced water and fog, and a new Scene Inspector for navigating complex projects.
At the same time the company discontinued its old Standard subscriptions, cut the price for Pro version and now offers Studio subscription tier that includes Lumion View, a SketchUp plugin.

The Color Out of a Laser
A team of scientists claims to have discovered a totally new color that nobody could have seen before.
According to a BBC news report, researchers stimulated specific cells in the retina of a human eye. The participants claim to have witnessed a highly saturated blue-green colour that scientists have called "olo".
Seeing this color without technical stimulation appears to be impossible.
Some experts, however, question the very existence of a new color, saying it's 'subject to debate'.
The findings, published in the journal Science Advances.

Among the novel features are heavily updated keyframe animation capabilities, experimental support for fur materials, and a new modular garment library.
There is also a new IK joint mapping capability for imported 3D avatars.
Avatars created in such suites as Daz 3D, Adobe Mixamo, Reallusion Character Creator and Unreal Engine MetaHumans, can be converted automatically, provided their joint naming conventions match those of Marvelous Designer.
