Question for You.
336I hope I worded this correctly and that it makes sense.
This is a question for everyone. UE, Unity, Blender, Autodesk, ZBrush, DAZ3D, Poser, Godot- ALL the folks:
/p>
If you remember it, what was the thing that got you interested in and started in 3D art?
□■□
Follow up question:
If you've ever felt out of place or even lost motivation, what made you stay?

Oh I remember, the beginning of the internet (for me 1996 so to say) and I wanted to make my own homepage.
Remember, all the glittering pages, filled with flash, cute pictures and stuff like that.
First I had to learn html, got the book (a REAL one) self html, over 500 pages.
And then I stumbled over some figures, really nice looking and I started to search. Found a forum "Die Murkser" and was lost, in a good way.
Bryce, my first love, followed by daz studio, tried Poser as well (version 4) found Terragen v.9
Never felt out of place, too many ideas, that could keep me going on for at least 200 years and more.

I have been trying to create comics since aged 7 and pin up art since aged 13.
In 1996, I felt artisticly desperate, because scetching out the illusion of 3 dimensional objects and bodies, worked well on every viewer of my pictures, but not on myself.
(I learnt later, that Piccaso went through the same issue, and that's where he invented his art style.)
For me it has always been to get as photo real results as possible, for I am most likely the most consequencial escapist. ;-D
Watching friend playing PC games like Quake, I imagined a software, where a 3d should work as a refernce for artists.
Obviously Larry Weinberg had the same idea, but much better. Instead of just dreaming of it and wasting time, he actually did this.
Poser addressed, what I've been missing in my artwork: 3 dimensions.
Poser has become a love-hate roler coaster. Love, because it is exactly the concept, I need and hate, because it up still today does not address the important features.
In terms of animation at least, I think Reallusion did, what Poser should have done.
Genesis 3 and IRAY made me abandon Poser completely.
Better figures, better render engine, while Poser is basically still there, where I left it 15 years ago.
Now DAZ has to be careful to not miss the sign of times, by not catching up to important features and get alured by BS-features.
Generative AI is a Dead End - period !!!
If Reallusion would introduce geoshell and geo-graft technology to their figures, DAZ would be out of the race quickly.
BTW: How easy or difficult is it, to have automated JCMs in CharacterCreator 4?
But here I am, with my G8F character, that I have "perfected" over the past 10 years at least with acomplete origin story in mind, treating her like a muse.
So DAZ Studio it is. I liked the render engine to be able for more photo real results, or I have to get ready for learning Blender.
I am so bad with learning software and Blender looks like the worst to learn.
Positive note: Blender won't leave me the chance for a brain rot, then
So yeah, my back story with 3d.
Something to bame my hair loss for
... and I haven't touched a pencil for at least 15 years by now. Not sure, if I could still sketch out something.

My apology for typos.
Blame it on the missing EDIT funktion.

Saw a copy of Poser 6 in CompUSA somewhere around 2005. Bought it simply because. Switched to Daz around 2015 because of Daz going to .duf and Poser being in limbo at the time.
I'm more of an old ex-athlete that read alot of sci-fi and fantasy as a kid so I don't think of myself as an artist. I just buy other peoples products, place, pose, tweak in away that fits my tastes, and render, though these days I usually try to think of a story/scenario/reasoning for the scene itself.
While I try to stay away from the whole AI debate, I did download an app, at least I think its an app, called Framepack last night. Actually was able to do a 8 second video of Melovephotos Olivia character that I had posed in front of a car. So cool to see a character from a render I have done move and pose, even interact with the car. Think it took about an hour to render on my old PC. Anyways, it something I thought I'd never see because I don't have the talent or patience to key frame something like that and even if I did, it wouldn't have looked anywhere near that good.

I discovered 3D by chance on a CD with a Computer Arts magazine. It was a version of Poser with Victoria.
Then I discovered Daz Studio with Genesis (Version 1), which was free and whose interface was more intuitive and practical.
Since I'm bad at drawing, it allowed me to express myself through drawings. Then I wanted to understand how to create sets. So I got my finger on the pulse by teaching myself Hexagon.
Once I understood how to make furniture and morphs to open and close doors and drawers, I tried clothing.
Then I wanted to understand how to create characters. Using my notes, I wrote a few tutorials:

I have been an artist since I was a child making detailed shaded pencil drawings throughout primary and secondary school and later Acrylic paintings on canvas as an adult.

On the3D computer graphics side ,I started with Fractal Designs Poser2 and Bryce 3D while I was working as professional graphic designer in the print industry.
I was interested in animation from start and Poser always had some BVH files to make the characters run/walk etc.
I used Poser for animation even began doing commission work
which resulted in me getting and IMDB film credit
for and indie film that for which I provided an animated faked video game sequence.
https://www.imdb.com/name/nm4134490/
Stayed with Poser until the emerging Daz studio got the aniMate nonlinear aniblock system.
But I eventually migrated to iclone for motion creation and exported the motion to Daz figures that were then rendered in Maxon C4D.
Migrated from Maxon C4D after the Blender UI re-design back in version 2.8
Now slowly learning Autodesk Maya as well as migrating over to 2D animation and Graphic novels.
Fully embracing AI as an assistive tool particularly for multi -lingual voice overs and royalty free music tracks for My 2D & 3D animated projects.

Short answer!
I guess the start was Airfix kits as a kid. I was always fascinated by miniatures.
Kit bashing custom parts made with a dremel. It got me a job eventually. I made a fair amount of models and props for stage and screen. Worked on some interesting projects and was offered a permanent job. I decided to try it on my own. Starting my own production company I was to busy editing and trying to make a living to do that many models. I worked away a lot but spent time on the pc during winter.
The next big step was modding Morrowind and later skyrim. The first time I opened the CK and saw just wire frames I was
scared XD about two years later I tried again and started modding. Not long later I was building my own worlds. I still had no idea how to model. I could mash .niff files together and make collision.
A decade soon passes and then everything changed when I landed the biggest job ever as a lone parent to a 9month old boy. If I hadn't been put in the position to stop working away then I doubt I would have got back into model making. I think at least one parent should be at home so I took a big chance and started learning Cryengine, sketchup and zbrush. It was a very hard time but also an opportunity to update my skills.
After 10 years mostly living on the road it was a big shock to the system and I needed to keep my mind busy. I kept a couple of jobs and even started a crew creche so I could take my child to work. He grew up driving telehandlers and climbing stages as a toddler. Later I only worked two events a year just to keep me sane. I took the time to practice sculpting and made many assets and game levels.
Instead of making a game I designed a rehab therapy for game addiction. I had some backing from a number of places but most importantly I had a platform. Cryengine. I did start a big project with Crytek and I must say they are very helpful. I have a lot of respect for the team there and I'm extremely grateful for everything they contributed to my project. It was a "game addiction" therapy for under 18's but with a difference. I won't say here as it is my own IP and
don't want to give it away. It was a good way to use all my skills over the years and hold an event with a difference.
Maybe someone one day will help me pick it up. A lot of kids get sent to military style boot camps every year just for using a pc or the internet too much. My program was so different and helped the kids in a radical new way. You can't treat kids that use tech too much like criminals. Sending them to a standard rehab for drink or drugs is what happens today. I wanted to change that.
Unfortunately 2020 blew that project to pieces as It was due to launch in the August. All events cancelled. 4+ years work down the drain.
I went bust.
That was when I almost gave up.
That was 5 years ago. I focused more on modeling recently and only been active online the last 2 years. Made some nice friends here so It motivates me to be more active.
My son's 16 now. He not only wants to be a game / animation dev but he's already on his way. I promised him I'd teach him game dev until he is 18. then I will go back to work freelance.
I'm still learning, never stop. My models have come a long way since I got 3dcoat. I'm re mastering everything ready to sell.
