I have not seen any forum threads here on this .
The Powerful Modeling and rendering software from the Foundry MODO
is being EOL'd and is now free with a ten year license.
It has better hard surface model tools than Blender and comes bundled with a free octane render license as well.

No, at least I haven't been aware.
That has now changed
Thank you

Thanks for this tip
I'll stick with Blender (enough for my modeling / scuplting stuff)... but I'm very interested in what Modo has to offer in the texture painting section

Thu, May 22I am a Blender idiot, but looking at both Blender And Modo UIs at first sight, they kinda look alike to me.
VUE was made available and now MODO, the 3D market is going through some significant changes.
but POSER still has a couple hundred dollar pricetag. How to make sense of that?

This is because Renderosity is nothing more than an Ad hub and lower tier discount outlet for Daz genesis female content at this point.
Poser and Renderosity's continued existence is fully subsidized by those genesis female content sales
as the software itself would have likely become orphaned/abandonware (or similar ),had Renderosity not bought it in a fire sale from the failing Smith Micro.
The great irony with MODO is that its original founders were former Lightwave3D developers from the original Lightwave parent company Newtek.
They left to form a company called Luxology as an alternative to
lightwave as lightwave was in steep decline as it's user base was fleeing in droves to Maxon and Autodesk.
Luxology/MODO was eventually purchased by The Foundry investment group, who killed it after a few years,
ironicly leaving the vestigial Lightwave3D software still desperately clinging to life with a small rabble of fanatical loyalists ,much like Poser

A cautionary tale for Daz inc. :-/

Thanks for the heads up on MODO.
It seems obvious that Daz's owners have downsized staff to bare minimum after closing their office and moving it to a suburb apartment with everyone working remotely. They'll probably keep it going--until it stops pulling its weight--and pull the plug unceremoniously without warning like they do with everything else.

Sat, May 24When Daz_Rawb left almost four years ago I figured that the place was in decline. Since then, the Tafi cancer has done nothing but come up with short sighted attempts at making money. NFT's was insultingly stupid. I keep hoping that the diffeomorphic plugin for Blender matures and becomes a viable replacement for Studio.

Sat, May 24Well, using the diff-plugin relies on there being genesis characters, and if DAZ fails, there will be a MASSIVE hole left behind for our hobby, as I'd hate to only have poser's mediocre characters, and their always-online bullshit is a massive deterrent for me…
Yeah, I love using Daz Studio, so seeing as this is the only alternative for the 3D hobbyist aside from poser to create scenes using genesis, I fear for Daz's future as I love that software!
Sure there's blender, but there is no genesis, as DAZ is the best at offering *affordable* fully-rigged character models at far less than turbosquid's exorbitant prices!
NOTE: I understand the reason for those prices though, but still, they're far more expensive than any of DAZ's offerings…

Sun, May 25Quite honestly, out of the super high prized female 3d figures at turbo squid, there are only two or three, I'd even considering to buy.
The only example, that deserves my mercy
and that I would buy, just incase of the rare event, a money donkey with a severe diarrhea, would show up in my garden,
is this one:

Sun, May 25Most definitely an incredible figure, and while Turbo Squid's offerings are prohibitively expensive, they are indeed, high quality!
I'm most impressed by the loins/pelvis/gluteal bends, as that is the one place where daz ignores, were it not for Ultimate Natural Bend Morphs/Natural Movement morphs I would be doing a lot more morphing than I'm currently now, and as far as I know, there are only a few PAs (As well as the evolution series, but V4 is pretty much dead to me…) that I know of that has paid enough attention to genesis's loins/pelvis area, and not just the boobs and ass!
Not that there's anything wrong with those morphs, I'm just being specific towards the area that is largely ignored.

Daz figure technology peaked with Genesis 8 thus Dazs growth as company has stagnated.
Genesis 9 is a solution in search of a problem.
As far as quality image making of attractive people, Genesis had no equal until AI came along.
there we be no next generation of Daz studio users.
generative AI has assured that.
Soon the only people willing to invest thousands in a powerful PC & GPU will be video gamers and people running local , installs of AI compute systems
(comfy UI etc)
The notion that newbies will invest in such hardware and still have to wait for Bloated 8K textured Genesis content to render in Iray is fool hardy
If Daz dies its content market dies and when that happens Bondware/Renderosity/Poser will quickly follow

Sun, May 25Genesis 8 together with geografts and geoshell is unbeaten.
There just isn't anything better out there, unless in super high prized areas, but even then quite stylized.

Mon, May 26… Well, shit… Great news that metahuman is no longer locked online!
Looks like DAZ has its work cut out for them, they seriously need some self-reflection, I mean if they paid more attention to their animation tech they could at least remain relevant in the face of AI, and IClone…
A definite missed opportunity to develop their animation capabilities, as DS 2k25 is STILL focused on worthless still images!

$80 is incredibly doable, yeah, Daz needs to up its game, and work on their animation tech!

I used to criticize Daz for not developing good animation tools, but to be fair, it probably would not even matter at this point because we no longer have individual competing softwares but entire competing ecosystems.
UE5, the Metahumans and the epic content store is a complete ecosystem for game development and films.
if you are steeped in that ecosystem you really have no need look outside at Daz or even Reallusion.
This is why the Blender community largely ignores Daz & Reallusion because there is a Blender ecosystem that has everything Blender users need in the form of content & addons for the program.
Daz can't grow its little sandbox any larger
and are actually losing users to generative AI, hence their
new paywalling of the "premium content" to further extract revenue from the remaining user base.

Fri, May 30Yeah, I'm going to have to learn blender/URE I mean meta human is light years from genesis!
Ah yes, the recurring funeral for DAZ - held every year by people who swear they've moved on but still can't stop talking about it like an ex that got hotter. Let's be real: DAZ isn't dead, it just dropped v4.24 with a glow-up. The new UI looks sleek, viewport performance is smoother than Blender's excuse for a rigging system, and - shockingly - renders don't take a full lunch break to finish. I actually saw noticeable improvements in load times and IRAY performance. Who knew? A working update from DAZ. Plot twist!
And while we're burying software alive, let's talk AI. It doesn't create, it Frankensteins. Mixes bits of art it didn't make and calls it innovation. AI is like a cover band - it can play the hits, but it'll never write a classic. My granny told me back when computers first entered the office, folks were losing their minds thinking jobs were doomed. Spoiler: they weren't. Jobs evolved. Just like we're evolving now.
I've dabbled in Blender, Unreal, Maya, ZBrush - you name it. Blender? Free, yes. But also like a free gym membership where the dumbbells are hidden, and you need 10 plugins just to open the door. Unreal? Fantastic engine, but the learning curve is Everest with a hangover. DAZ? Still the most beginner-friendly tool out there. You can be an absolute rookie and still get cinematic results. And if you want to level up? 10 hours of tutorials and you're flying.
Genesis 9 isn't the flop some are chanting about either. I've built G9 characters that honestly blew my G8 work out of the water. The detail, the structure, the flexibility - it's all there. You just have to use it before dismissing it.
Sure, the market's slow. But that's everything right now. People aren't leaving DAZ - they're just broke. The economy's the real villain here, not the software. When wallets recover, so will the sales.
So before we hand DAZ its eulogy, maybe let's log into 4.24 first. You might find that it didn't die - it just got a performance boost and a fresh haircut.

Daz studio rigging does not even have a proper Ik/FK system for foot and had contact for manual posing & animation
even Poser is better in this regard to say nothing of Blenders native Rigify control rig
Quote: Blender? Free, yes. But also like a free gym membership where the dumbbells are hidden, and you need 10 plugins just to open the door.
Daz studio is built on third party PA addons
if you take way all of the third party plugins
(which includes Iray), Daz studio is basicly Poser with
better quality base models and an outdated version of 3Delight render engine.
Quote: You can be an absolute rookie and still get cinematic results. And if you want to level up? 10 hours of tutorials and you're flying.
Without motion blur and depth of field you wont get cinematic results with Iray
it is a slow, old tech, brute force path tracer that does not even support the realtime path tracing for which modern RTX cards were designed.
Quote: maybe let's log into 4.24 first. You might find that it didn't die - it just got a performance boost and a fresh haircut.
As long as you never upgrade your (Iray Mandatory) NVIDIA GPU to the
more powerful 5.x series because then you have to use the horribly crippled DS 2025 just to render,
which kills all previous plugins and hope and pray that the PAs will bother to update your plugins and further pray that those updated plugins
will not be locked behind the new monthly paywall along mesh grabber.

Thanks a lot for informing us of modo going free, though, I'm unable to use it as I need a bloody licence for an abandoned program!
Yeah, not only does modo have always online DRM, (After 30 days) I cannot even activate it due to not having a licence for the free prog, and I cannot get a licence without first, purchasing it, but the bloody prog ain't even for sale!
And the only people who are eligible for the freebie are those who already have the licence to begin with, but why offer it for "free" to people who already have the bloody licence, it defeats the purpose of even offering it for free!
I wrote a ticket, and this was the response: ⇒ “to clarify, Foundry is not providing any free versions of Modo to users who did not already own a license for Modo and as we have decided to discontinue Modo we no longer offer a trial version or allow users to purchase new Modo licenses, for these reasons you unfortunately won't be able to license and use Modo./p>
So their logic is to host a free version of their abandoned rentware DRM'd software, only to those who already have bought a rental licence, therefore rendering their free software moot… Uninstalled and deleted from my HDD… Time for me to crack open and learn to use Blender!

I just did a test download of the the year license file from
the link I posted at the top of the thread
https://campaigns.foundry.com/modo-eol-license
you have until 21 OCT 2025 to get your copy
There is no online DRM
My main PC is air gapped from the internet
and runs the free MODO just fine.

Yeah, as far as the 30 days before it's a mandatory online requirement, I was going by this bit of info ⇒

But upon second thought, it just may be that the always-online requirement is for licences that have been purchased, rather than the one that came along with the free version!
I did not read the page as thoroughly as I thought, as I was in a bit of a rush due to my excitement, so thanks again, for the clarification!
