Why are the default settings poor?
244Example with Daz Studio
Iray:
Dome + Scene => light colors turn white during rendering
dForce:
The Stiffness settings need to be adjusted to prevent clothing from exploding
Textures:
Metallicity/Roughness isn't the most suitable
Windows 11
Renaming a file in a context menu submenu
I'm sure you have other examples to add to the list

Anyone who comes up with ideas like this to promote the Iray Dome has nothing on the ball
" Why are the default settings poor? "
It would cost money to improve anything

Thu, Nov 20, 2025If I understand correctly, the products are minimally tested, and when they are tested, the developers take the easy and quick route for themselves, even if it means the user has to constantly re-enter the correct parameter values (I'm thinking of dForce parameters, for example).

Fri, Nov 21, 2025I agree. Whether it's dForce settings or Iray tone mapping, the default settings make little sense. The unfortunate aspect is that many users who are unaware of this utilize these inadequate settings and are then surprised by exploding knickers (dForce) or pale images (tone mapping).
Well, i still have some problems with lights.
I try to apply the 3 point spotlight setup and it works most times.
But it is really hard to get it right.
Dforce works most times. I use Linday's hair (side messy hair) and its great. Best hair i known.
But it does collide sometimes.
My biggest issue is skins. When a character cost $20, the skin is usually not that great. I bought Frieda and her skin is great. I look for normal's as that is what i need. I don't do HD at all as it cost more computer time.
So what are the best default settings anyway?
I am just a hobbyist and not a pro in doing DAZ. I always thought, well i can make a story of sorts. But DAZ itself has more limits. Lot of things i imagine aren't available and i don't have the skill to make everything from sratch.
What i really miss, is a normal european apartment. There is a asset for that of course but it renders very slow.
Most items are, i consider as luxury.

Sun, Dec 07, 2025Unfortunately, I can't help you with dForce or Skin. But I do have a few tips for you regarding lighting:
If you're using Iray for rendering, the spots need different values than the default settings:
1 spot: 120,000 lumens (sic)
2 spotlights: both around 60,000 to 70,000 lm
3 spotlights: all three around 30,000 to 40,000 lm
The intensity can be adjusted, as can the spread angle. The height and width of the spotlights are also interesting: the larger they are, the less light they produce, but the softer the shadows.
In tone mapping (render settings), the default gamma setting is too high (in my opinion). Try settings between 1.8 and 2.0 and see what happens. Crush blacks and burn highlights are also great for experimenting with. Another interesting feature there is the cm2 Factor, which can also be used to refine settings.
In my opinion, DAZ has a lot to do with experimentation and trial and error (the settings mentioned, but also, for example, the position of the lights, the use of dome and scene, etc.).
If you like experimenting, I have a lighting freebie for you. It's very experimental... but you might be able to pick up a few tips and tricks.

Good luck

Tue, Dec 09, 2025Hey Pushee-Ri,
thanks for the tips. I will try it out.
It is really a pain to play with DAZ to get the lights right. I am not so bad with it but i never got it right in a way that it looks like my apartment lights.
Thumbs up.

Thu, Dec 11, 2025I‘d love, if there were European apartments out there.
Neo classical, Haussmann or mediterainian.
Please no more modern or American rchitecture“
About skins, I am repeating myself:
All skins are too dark.
If you make them brighter, they loose realism.
Again:
You can get enice sunrise“ Hari at poly haven for free.
It has people in the background, to adjust your skin tone to.

because then a person with no talent could simply render a great image, kinds like AI.
with bad adequate to mediocre setting, the artists that undderstand 3D will tweak those as necessary and deliver outstanding work. and the mediocre setting are just right for the artist the trajectory of the learning curve. There is method to this madness.

Thu, Dec 11, 2025This is an acceptable explanation for 3D or 2D drawing software, but there are other examples:
To rename a file, up until Windows 10, a right-click allowed you to do so; this is no longer the case with Windows 11.
With Chrome, for years, opening a link in a new window was the second option; now it's in a split window.
But why change everything all the time?
When we use software, we develop habits; changing everything wastes our time, so we're far from the official narrative of improving productivity!
