There has been a lot of discussion in various forum threads about the RenderHub contests, and we receive a lot of messages, as well.
I figured I would start this thread so everyone can discuss the contests in one place.
The owner would like to continue to have contests here at RenderHub - and would like to have one going at all times.
We have lots of ideas, and so do you! Please share your feedback and ideas for future contest themes right here.
I would like to thank everyone who has participated in the contests so far. It's been a lot of fun!

Hi. One suggestion (if possible) is that you could very briefly summarize the highlights of the top 3 winners that the judges arrived at in selecting them. This would be very useful feedback for beginners from the pros.

Fri, Apr 28, 2023I absolutely agree with this proposal.
Not so long ago, I offered about the same thing, only in the form of a broadcast on YouTube. But it's probably too hard to implement.

Fri, Apr 28, 2023That would be pretty nice to know. However, the owner does not get that kind of feedback from the judges.
Unfortunately, it's difficult to find judges willing to put the time into doing it the way it is. Asking them to do more would be a tough sell.

Hi Foxy! How about a short animation contest?

I think we'll see an animation contest coming up sometime.
Thanks for the feedback.

Foxyyyyyy!!!!!!
Hope your well
I was thinking maybe renderhub could approach some of the following companies and see if they could sponsor some of these contests.
Considering they will help in the creation of 3d assets that could possibly be sold on the renderhub store.
Might give some beginners a chance to learn some new skills, even intermediate and expert.
https://www.cgfasttrack.com/
Blender tutorials
https://www.maxon.net/en/
Zbrush - Sculpting
https://www.marvelousdesigner.com/
Clothing creation
There may be more if anyone can suggest
Any 3d modeling tutorials or programs that could possibly sponsor the contest and help people grow in creative ways.
Even a discount to a subscription service would be ideal if companies wanted to help out. These companies would be getting advertising and possible new sales and renderhub would be getting 3D assets for thier store
It's all about money lol.
Something to think about.
Have a wonderful Day

Mon, May 01, 2023Hey there! These are great ideas.
We actually have someone in contact with Marvelous Designer right now. I hope that turns into something.
Thank you for the feedback.

I had a thought... Since the last contest was illustrating the art community's disdain with AI created pieces, why not run with that theme a little? One of the things that vexes me personally is scrolling through my YouTube feed and seeing multiple videos by users who compile a bunch of AI generated images with some nonsensical caption like "Countries as Supervillains" or "X-Men in the style of Balenciaga" (these types of postings are appearing entirely far too often). Why not a competition where the contestants show that they can do anything AI can do, but with far more feeling, have the contest be a portrait that mixes styles. Basically John Henry vs. the steam drill in modern art context. Leave the subjects and styles up to the contestants themselves so long as they are two opposing styles, then they can be judged on everything from effectiveness of the imagery to convey the concept, composition, effectiveness of each individual element of the two chosen, style, showmanship, etc. I've found that the only way to get better as an artist is to challenge myself repeatedly by delving out of my comfort zone and pushing the boundaries of my own imagination, so even with beginners and pros alike, the more open the challenge is to individual interpretation, the better the results will tend to be.
Just my two cents of course.

Some ideas
A contest using only free assets
A one-light only contest using a single light to illuminate a scene (no HDRI)
A contest titled "Day at the beach" - A good summertime contest

Mon, May 01, 2023"...A contest using only free assets..."
Yes. Something like that is already on my own idea list. I was thinking it would be cool to plan in advance and have vendors offer some products for free to get extra exposure during the contest. The vendors could be the "sponsors".
Or maybe just allow any free assets available on RenderHub, with the entry linking to the assets used.
"...Day at the beach..."
For sure! This theme is already at the top of my list. I would love to see a fun summer render contest. I think this one is going to happen.

With the results out for this contest, there are a few things I thought I need to put forward regarding contests in general.
I did win an earlier contest last year and for this one I did put in two entries, which I thought were serious contenders.
Seeing the results, the winners were a square render with AI logo like a head shot photo. The winners and subsequent honorable mentions
got this right 100%. Congrats to all of them on winning.
The description for the contest being making a "creative scene" with focus on "No AI" can take different translations. So, I assume my understanding of that was 100% wrong and also of many others who did not make the cut.
I do pester Foxy with lot of questions, and he/she is patient enough to answer to all of them. For this contest I got the expected deliverable totally wrong.
I suggest to all future contestants to pose queries regarding the descriptions on "what" is actually expected. The early the better.
This I think will be helpful for all those participating.
Two other points regarding contests that is not clear to me.
Firstly., Is writing a paragraph on how did you go about creating it, is that necessary to compete?
Secondly, contestants posting pointless snapshots of their "creative" process, is that too necessary to compete?
I am no artist, some are really insightful, with each image posted with genuine intention of capturing what they were thinking at that stage.
Some are absolute garbage with staring with multiple reference images ending with a render which has no correlation to the start.
With an even bigger prize money waiting for the fashion contest and still some time to get it done. I hope more users post queries on the same on the official thread to really define what is being expected.
Thanks.

Sun, Aug 20, 2023Hi there. Sorry I missed your post until now.
"...I do pester Foxy with lot of questions..."
It's not pestering me at all. I'm happy to help as much as I can.
"...Is writing a paragraph on how did you go about creating it, is that necessary to compete?..."
"...posting - snapshots of their "creative" process, is that too necessary to compete?"
No, they are not necessary - but it is actually encouraged by the rules of the contests.
"All WIP images and your final render should be submitted in that thread as your entry"
"Judging will also take into consideration the difficulty and complexity of the overall execution of work."
I agree that some people do go overboard, but many of these extras are helpful and give insight into the creative process.

Hi all,
I have an idea for a NEW contest. I will call it (working title) something like: "PICTURE TALK CONTEST". Its an animation contest for everyone. Its really easy to do. You do not need a 1 million dollar equipment, you do not have to wait millions of render hours for a result. Its done in between minutes and the result is amazing. So anybody can do it!
WHY:
Yes I know, it sounds a bit crazy, but behind there is a huge opportunity for "ALL" users of renderHub. During the contest we will see and hear a lot of funny small video snippets. I think it will be good fun.
RULES:
The rules are easy: Just render a 3D picture (could be a human or an alien or a Dino or animal) - no background face to cam no expressions. Add a voice of your choice and let your picture talk. Upload you short video snippet to renderHub-vimeo, upload the original render picture to the forum and set the link to the vimeo video - done
Video-Example how this video snippet could look like:
PRO & CONT:
A regular animation contest is of course nice - but its nothing for "All" the renderhub users. You need lots of experience, state of the art equipment and time to render it out. Try to find a good animaton on youtube. That was one reason why i started the 4k initiative 2 years ago. During the last 2 years, nobody loaded up a video like mine. So my contest idea could be a game changer also for the non professionals
HOW TO:
I created 2 different tutorials how to do it (a written one and a video tutorial).
my written tutorial:

Oh, what about new users contest? In fields like posing, lighting, portrait, environment work. Or freebies contest where the person will end up having a product from one of the vendor's, also a small money coupon to be used for buying in the shop? Also a theme should be directed at learning, so maybe water and reflective surfaces? Lifelike posing. Maybe even contests where the main goal can be to achieve illustration type of look. Artistic nude, history, books, movies.

Sun, Aug 20, 2023@Hyp-St - These are all great ideas. Something like the "freebies contest" idea is something I've brought up to the owner a few times.
I thought it might be cool to have a render contest where people use items found on RenderHub.
Since legal issues make it so a contest cannot require that a purchase be made, including free items would be OK.
Since there are so many ideas for "official" RenderHub contests, I thought it might be fun to have events run by the community, also.
As @DoroThee237 pointed out, I did a Fun Render Event a few months ago (and hoped to inspire others to do similar things).

@AshenPortfolio did one last month.

And @dieggomasamune has one going on right now.

Hopefully, we'll see more fun community events in addition to the official RenderHub events.

I am happy to participate in this animation contest and I do share some of aki3dart16's opinions on the matter.
It has been a long standing frustration of mine that there is very little interest in character animation in the various 3D communities, even Blender.
I joined a facebook group literally called: "Daz studio animations" and it is completely dominated by portrait and pin-up STILL art no animations.
I joined another facebook group literally called "Blender for Filmmaking" and it is completely dominated by hard surface modeling enthusiasts posting stills of their latest models.
I am active in the Iclone community and it has a decent number of people whom I consider animated filmakers but to be honest the best place to find
full on animated features by individuals
(who actually understand cinematography), is the source filmmaker community.

Wed, Sep 13, 2023I use Daz Studio. Frequently the timeline gives results of interpolation of the starting and finishing poses which are surprising. Sometimes I would like to deactivate the automated calculation of the poses of the start and finish positions. I find that I spend too much time correcting errors which made me stop doing 3D animation.
On occasion I will test the animation with Iclone, perhaps I will obtain a result that suits me more quickly than with Daz Studio
