If our scenes have characters, are we allowed to create them in Daz or MakeHuman and then transfer them to the software that we're doing our scene?

HOW TO INSERT VIDEOS
We've been getting some messages from people asking how to add videos to their contest entry threads.
1. RenderHub allows users to embed videos from YouTube and Vimeo, so your video must be uploaded there first.
2. Copy the YouTube or Vimeo URL for your video - For example:
3. Click the "Insert Video" icon as shown in the image below
4. Paste the YouTube or Vimeo URL for your video and click "Insert Video"

I was going to suggest that you just add another post to your thread, but I see you did that already.

Is this purely an animation contest or also a 3d modeling one?
Meaning, does everything in the scene need to be created from scratch or can premade/bought assets be used?

First thank you @Foxy 3D for answering all the questions. But I am a bit confused, in the blue band on the top it said that the deadline is September 15th, but in the contest detail it said it's September 30. which one is the right one?

Sat, Aug 12, 2023Oh gosh... The date on the blue banner is a mistake. The contests do end on September 30th.
I have the ability to edit the contest detail pages, but that top banner is controlled by someone in the main office.
I just sent them a message and asked them to fix it.
Thank you for bringing that to our attention. Sorry for the confusion.

Hello, Foxy!
I noticed a similar question above, but I'm eager to gather more details. Based on my observations, participants often make use of premade scenes from sources such as the DAZ store, alongside characters spanning various styles and designs. These avatars are pre-existing. Individuals then combine these ready-made components (scenes and characters) to craft their renderings using the most convenient setup. My query is whether this approach aligns with the competition rules?
Furthermore, I'm intrigued to know whether the judges will genuinely consider and appreciate self-made meshes and environments. It would be disheartening to witness generic winners emerge after investing weeks of effort.
So, should I focus solely on the production of just the 'image,' or will the judges also take technical complexity into account?

Sat, Aug 19, 2023Hi there! For these two contests, no modeling is required. It is perfectly acceptable to use pre-existing assets.
The judging criteria does state:
"Submissions will be judged on creativity, originality and technical ability. Judging will also take into consideration the difficulty and complexity of the overall execution of work."
Based upon that, custom modeling *may* have an advantage, but not necessarily.
Since these are not modeling contests this time, the judges will have more freedom to decide how they want to consider those criteria.

Greetings
I have a question concerning renders being down sampled when uploaded on the site, not sure if others have noticed but id assume its every image uploaded, could be wrong and its only 4K images.
Images at 4k (3840 x 2160) get down sampled to 2800x1575

Also it adds in grain, a bit of fringing, blur and what looks like banding of certain colors and saturation reduction. Which is why in my entries ive put a link to the full resolution 4K image as when you look at it, its noticeable, well at least to me.
Below I've uploaded the image and shown these mentioned issues, even the eyes are orange, meant to be red, amongst other things.
Link to image : Comparison (imgbb.com)
Its just that if a person renders a final image at gets a viewable 100% quality he or she desired for the purpose intended, then lose about 30% of that quality by uploading it on the site (resolution reduction and image degradation) its a bit semi productive to the outcome of what its meant to be and takes away hours of work tinkering to get a desired effect.
Thanks for you time

Hi, is there a way to change the thumbnail in the contest gallery?
I submitted a good-looking render, a greyscale proof of authenticity, and a video link to the animation but the image that got used for the thumbnail was the grayscale image.
Any suggestions?

Fri, Sep 15, 2023The system will automatically generate the gallery thumbnail from the last image you submit in your thread.
Our contest moderator goes though and creates nice looking thumbnails for submissions that need them.
However, you can certainly create your own. Just add a square image to your thread, and the system will use that.

Hello, just a quick question the contest rules state : "Animation should be short - approximately 10 to 20 seconds."
Is it just a loose guidline or are you immediately disqualified if you upload one with lets say 30 - 45 seconds ?
Because there are some entrys with durations of over 1 and even 2 minutes ?!?
Thanks in advance.

It has always been "ok to go beyond that time limit".
The rules have always said "should be" - as in "recommended to be". It never said "must be" - as in "required to be".
As you said, the recommended time duration is stated in the rules, so the judges will be taking that into consideration.
Submissions that follow the recommendation will most likely have an advantage. If you did so, then that is good for you.

I checked with the owner to confirm, and he said it's OK as long as using the AI tools do not infringe upon another person's work.

So if i do a render to have a base scene, then do a drawing over it, i can participate with it?

However, for judging purposes we recommend "the more 3D, the better".

Hi, I submitted a wire a thumb and the entry image for this.
I have made some THING special for the Horror. Should I include production renders next time or just the Main requirements of Render and wire frame. What i'm saying is, are the production images relevant or better off in my personal gallery.

It has now been a full week past the published date that the winners were supposed to be announced, and I'm pretty disappointed. I don't know what the hold up is, but there has only been one post from someone speaking for RenderHub about a delayed announcement. That was six days ago. People have asked about updates with no response. There has been no further information coming from RenderHub.
I get that unexpected things happen...delays happen. Talk to us. We just might understand, but all we know right now (and for the past 6 days) is... "delayed".
We don't know why. We don't know for how long. We don't know anything because you haven't told us anything.
The longer you remain silent, the more we (or at least I, I guess) feel like communicating with us isn't really all that important to you. There isn't much value for me in a community without communication. If your purpose is to build community, I would suggest that your lack of communication is hindering that effort. If your purpose is really just transactional and economic (as a business), then I would suggest that your delay and lack of communication is pretty unprofessional and makes me lots less likely to want to use your services in the future.
I'm relatively new here. I've bought products here for a while, but this is the first contest I've entered, and I just started posting images to my gallery since this contest began cause I thought, "This could be fun." Now I'm starting to wonder if any of this is worth my time and effort.
Please fulfill the promise you made to us when you started this contest back in August, or, at the very least, be upfront with us about why you can't.

So... the finalist have been chosen and the judges are deciding on the winners, as a contestant I find that somewhat exciting, no one's entry was a "slam dunk"!
Patience, these posts only serve to agitate the masses and again, how exciting that the judges are having a hard time making their final decision, I think that says a lot about the quality of the submissions!

Mon, Oct 23, 2023Greetings
I get your point to a certain degree, but realistically if a person sat and looked at entries, it wouldnt take longer than an hour or two, to pick a favourite top 3 (per judge) for both contests at most an extra day or 2, especially the animation one seeming there arent many entries, not even 40 valid entries, so a week & a half to do so, is far from "deciding because there soooo many great entries"
Surely everyone judging knew or were told (Seeming they the sponsors) when the deadline for announcing entries would be.
Honestly I think its just been a slow process (as have been the last 3 contests) because those judging are taking their time, not Renderhub themself, but yes it does reflect on renderhub as thats were the contestants entered and were giving rules, deadlines and a winner's date.
Another thing that ive thought about, not sure anyone else has thought or noticed this as being a bit "unfair".
Normal in contests one can enter either once or more than once (which is allowed here) but my concern is who enters & how often they "allowed" to win, some contests only allow someone to win once ever so often (a time frame) as to 1stly not look suspect that one or two people keep winning and the second being it gives the people with less skill more chance.
If you racing motor bikes on a track, you dont allow the 500cc in the 50cc category or for most contests, races, sports or events.. its classed fairly. Yes art might be a bit different, but still the concept should still apply. Which basically means that those 500cc bikes will always come in pole position every race and 99% of the 50cc bikes wont.
Sure you get more activity, more users partaking etc but is that really fair on people starting off competing against people with much more skill? some might say 'dont worry bro get better' .. yeah catch up against people who do this for a living and over 10 years... not likely.
Some who have entered havent even posted 1 gallery pic, not store items and only have been here a few months and ONLY partakes in contests as they know they stand a high chance vs most entries who are people with less skill YET i bet those same people wouldnt dare try compete on Artstation as their "great" work will very rapidly be smothered by thousands of better artists, but.... they come here for 'easy pickings'

Mon, Oct 23, 2023This is not realistic and, I'm sorry to say, even a bit nave. There were 15 days between the deadline and the announcement of the winners. It's time enough to pick the winners.
There are sponsors for the contest, some people made an extra effort to respect the dealine and deliver their work in time.

@curvedinsight what do you mean? are you saying something is unfair? what do you mean by "who enters & how often they "allowed" to win" are you suggesting that the competition is rigged? I see no evidence for this and frankly I think it is a childish comment coming from someone that has made multiple entries while complaining about others.
The 500cc compared to a 50cc race all depends on the track. The terrain is everything as a big heavy 500cc would not be any good off road or on a tight and twisty race track. The 50cc would get around the corners and handling would make up for loss of power.
The same applies to art. It's not about having the best paint brush it's how you use said brush.
My old 50cc win 7 pc has taken more than 6 hours to render my entry. I work and bring up a child alone, including home school. leaving me very little time or money to bang out a dozen renders to chuck enough at the wall and hope one sticks as a winner.
Personally from myself to renderhub I'd like to say thank you. I have procrastinated far too long without publishing anything and the competition motivated me to get something finished and handed in on time as if i was still working.
For me that is a win. I got over the hump and finally published something for the first time in a few years.
The last competition i entered was on deviant art a few years ago. i put so much work into it without getting noticed i lost interest for a while. I forgot the point is really about beating yourself. Achieving the deadline with a relevant piece of work and progressing in the journey of improvement and skill both technically and artistically. That the real prize here.
Yes i'd like a win who wouldn't, but sharing your work and potentially being part of a bigger community in the long run is a far bigger win. Besides anything what is the point in winning anything if it is not earn't through merit.
fair? Is it fair that you attack other artist for posting there workflow? suggesting they are trolling yet it is perfectly acceptable to include wip and production pictures. are you so desperate for a win so much you will try put others down to scramble to the top. How is that fair?
The main thing i wish to say to you CI is focus on yourself and find the insight. I have over 28 years in the entertainment business and the most important thing above skill or experience is being polite and professional to everyone. that is the best skill you can ever have.
I hope some body understands this next statement. "the artist job is to reflect the society and time he or she i living in".
Personally I find it hard to produce work that has any relevance or meaning. When i make something it has to reflect or represent an aspect or raise an emotion or even just tip a hat to something. the artist job is to make the audience think. That is my burden anyway and the reason i do not mass produce renders for the sake of it. Being a true artist can be a real burden if you live and breath and act accordingly in every day life.
I believe it is even more important to say something with art now than ever. It is a very exciting time to be an artist and we have so many new tools or rather "brushes in our box" yet it is difficult to not be distracted and seduced by all the noise. It is all very well to bang out hundreds of things that look nice but in the end what does it mean?
Finally I agree the results should be in by now but considering how unstable our world is right now my main concern is will renderhub be able to withstand the fluctuations in the world of business? lets hope so as the site has come a long way since i joined a few years ago. I like to see it continue to grow and hope all is well so I can open a shop in the future.
CI I understand some of what your saying but maybe consider taking some of that ambition inwards and use it, focus it and put it in your work. Best regards

Mon, Oct 23, 2023Short answer to this : I have been bettering my own work, thats not the point.
Its NOT about me in my comment, its about the hundreds of other people entering who dont stand a chance to win, they enter a contest so they can win, its them im concerned about, not some guy with an ego taking advantage of easy wins who contributes nothing else to the site

Mon, Oct 23, 2023Lastly, mentioning life stories, please dont by your comments assume im fed with a silver spoon and have an easy life (unlike some) or powerhouse pc.
So far from it, Im in South Africa, live alone & work on a farm for a roof over my head & a plate of food. With what little i do have, I look after stray animals and have no family. So yes I have entered a lot, why not ?? its allowed, welcomed, it brings more art out to see etc etc..
anyhow peace man

I would like to add @curvedinsight we have all been beginners and been where you are, like I told you I have been with Daz Studio for sixteen years and changed from Poser, I am no way good with the technical side of things and I am still learning new things every day with the program I use. This is my first competition and I enjoyed entering very much not for the money but because it is fun and like stated it does not matter how many images you enter only one if lucky will be picked. You have as much chance as anybody else and from looking at all the image made they are all winners, My advice not that you need it is to just have fun and enjoy what you do.

Mon, Oct 23, 2023its not about me "complaining" because of my own skills vs others though.. my remarks in the comments arent quite being read correctly it seems.. Ive used 3D apps and done various things over the years for a few months @ a time as a hobby, entering here was a chance to better my work, to have a reason, others to view, comment etc now that not only Im seeing what i do.
For the amount of time using blender and what ive accomplished in just a few months since starting using it is huge for me. I new at doing this and showing it yes, but im not a beginner lol. Ive just got better quicker because im not just doing some renders alone at home for myself in my spare time and not being part of a community

Tue, Dec 19, 2023Hey @curvedinsight, I completely resonate with your sentiments. We've all been beginners at some point, and the learning curve is part of the journey. Like you, I've been using Daz Studio for a long time16 yearsand transitioned from Poser. Despite the years, I'm still not a pro at the technical aspects and find myself learning something new every day. Entering competitions, like my first one recently, was more about the enjoyment and passion for creating than the prize money. It's true; every image shared is a winner in its own right. My advice, though you probably don't need it, is to simply have fun and relish the creative process. And hey, on a different note, it might be a good the-best-time-to-visit-the-empire-state-building esb new york such a fantastic place!
This thred is really devolving into chaos isnti it
