Don't know if this is an alright thread, but figured to open it.
It hit me it's been over a decade of me using Daz, so I thought I'd show you something to remember - my first renders ever!

Let's hope that I've improved a bit by now.
As you can see, the lady ranger has poke through, because I had no idea how to fix them. Now I know to paint over or better yet hide geometry. But I was very pleased that, after reading a couple of daz tutorials, I had been able to pose her, load outfit to wear, and create a simple scene. You can see D&D influence was strong
One thing that hasn't really changed.
I encourage you to share your own first renders too. Maybe throw in your latest one to boot. I think it would benefit the new users to see the beginnings of seasoned artists. Maybe elaborate how your art has changed since those first batch of renders? Share your struggles on your artistic journey. It would make fellow artist's feel less alone.

My first renders (overall) are gone with a dead HD. IIRC my first was missing a backdrop. Had a ground plane, but no backdrop.

Fri, Sep 29, 2023My very, very first official render was millennium dragon with no lighting on. I posted it on Facebook and remember being so proud of it heh
I never published my real first renderings. This is the first one I published 11 years ago.
Translation of the text by Pierre Dac
"We must not be afraid of the horses under the hood but of the donkey behind the wheel"

My last rendering actually worked (my other renderings are promotions of my products and are not really worked)

Fri, Sep 29, 2023I am curious how you achieved that end result with the girl. As for first render - interesting way of putting the text.

Fri, Sep 29, 2023I started by positioning G8F holding a bust size plan (without decoration)
I made a first rendering by deleting the plan (which hid the bust)
With Photoshop I used the contour filter and cut out the bust
It is this rendering which is on the sheet of paper. I adjusted the drawing with the tiles and offset parameters
I added the decor

Fri, Sep 29, 2023I make an image to describe a situation, tell a story, react to information. Putting a character, dressing them and setting a setting is not in my world. After a few years, I wanted to understand how we made a decor, I started with simple things, a table, a stool. I wanted to go further into how we make an articulated character. I started by articulating a wooden toy: a train and its wagons. Then a very simple character. a sphere for the head and quadrilaterals for the torso and limbs. This is a summary of my 3D journey, it's been around 20 years since I started and I learned everything on my own, with tutorials, I much prefer written tutorials to videos because you don't always see the menus and under menus to use, and unfortunately the person making the video rarely says it, and even more rarely writes it.

Fri, Sep 29, 2023I learned a lot on my own. I could have learned with videos, but for me written with clear instructions are better. A lot of videos are speed up or time-lapse. Some people I don't understand so have to repeat. Also, liked being able to, for example, listen to an audio book or music while reading the tutorial and applying. Took off a lot of pressure even when I did come to difficulties. Then again that could be me.
I can advise also to invest in cheap graphics tablet. Also, if new artists don't have super rigs ( I sure as hell didn't) now there are options to make your art. You will likely have to wait for hours true, but it will get out. Discovering you can hide geometry and apply scene optimizer on it, you are golden. I wish I knew this things when I first started out making renders.
Back then separating the render into elements was the way to go and do things. Still is though. Much easier and quicker.

Awesome topic, i was thinking about this the other day, i do get asked how i make my images sometimes, its alot of work, tutorials and helpful people and comments that explain how to do things help.
I remember seeing the Daisy 8 Pro bundle and wanted to learn how to render like the promos.
I also liked the Deviney promos, never new what a photoshop brush was lol.
I eventualy learnt Daz and photoshop
My first ever Render 12th July 2020
Daisy 8

Below 18th July 2020
Daisy 8
Figured out how to use a HDRI

And heres Daisy 8
17th December 2022 Below
Which is a mix of Daz Studio and Photoshop

Eventualy got to a point i was happy with.
Always learning something new.
I was and still am always googling and searching forums to help if i get stuck.
One thing i found that really helped is to do what you love the most.
Sit with it for a couple weeks, try different things, revisit old renders and improve them when you learn something new.

Fri, Sep 29, 2023I agree with that statement.
Also, mighty nice improvement in a couple of months. You pick up fast

Fri, Sep 29, 2023I wish it was a couple of months lol, 2 years 5 months between the first two renders and the last.
Can't remember when I had the courage to post my first image. I remember it was an angel
Might post it later today, still one of my favourites.

Sun, Oct 01, 2023My eyes must have been dead tired when I typed that because I just saw the dates you provided lol
Daisy 8 after has a keen illustration vibe to it. Which is good.

I don't have any of my first ones. It didn't take me long at all to get through the basics by trial and error, finding some tutorials here and there when I needed an "ah ha" moment or two. The first few months was spent thinking "Wow, this is my best yet," to looking at it a week later and thinking "ew."
The community for this is VAST, and so with good Google-Fu, it's easy to really get rolling with this. As my assets expended, I actually started storyboarding and went from simple portraits to scenes to... To purging because my skill grew or because I thought of tweaks the the overall story, which are harder to rewrite in renders than in mere text, and, and, and.
So what I had begun a couple years ago as a story that probably would have made a year's worth of comics has now blown into a vast collection of shorts orbiting around a much more epic plot. But I still love to play every now and again, and those go into my gallery.
Best. Hobby. Ever.

Mon, Oct 02, 2023Oh definitely. But I want my stories to be a bit closer to perfect before releasing anything. You know those TV and book series you love but by the end you could tell that the authors were making them up as they went along or didn't start it with a clear path for their characters? Yeah, I hate it when that happens.
I don't want to go through years of material only to have to retcon, so I'm taking it as a slow project. But I will, some day.

Thu, Oct 05, 2023Sometimes slow project is a good project. Especially if it is a story. I have thought of doing mine as a graphic novel some day.
My first. December of 2006.

Thu, Oct 19, 2023Both are great in their own way. First one has that whimsical vibe that looks as it may have come out straight from a game cut scene , while the other is more illustration like.

Mon, Oct 23, 2023I do find these comments a little odd, as the first render is from a tutorial from DAZ. I literally just followed the step-by-step and hit the render button. It's an OpenGL render using stuff that came with my copy of Studio.
I appreciate the feedback though.

Oh wow! How many beautiful stuff here!
My first renders were long long time ago) In Daz Studio 3 and it was even not 3Delight (cause my PC was too slow for realistic renders) Mmm.... I couldn't find the first one, but here is a little later one from 2011 ) Daz Studio 4 I guess )) Here we have character made based on Michael 4) and non HDRI background )) Cutout from my instagram gallery))

Once upon a time I used Maya for about a month and ended up modelling this

Sun, Nov 12, 2023For a month in Maya to end up modelling that my hat's off to you. Maya back in 2010 looked too much complicated not to mention too expensive. Fast forward to today it's still expensive, looks complicated and you need a beast to run it, but it is the industry standard.

A blast from the past. This one is exactly 10 years and 10 months old. Back then sliders were the only thing known

OK - here comes mine: 2 years old (I'm a late starter), GF8 base, dialed with "Rebecca" skin (hence the "plastic" look), first, stumbling steps in creating 3D clothing .... and no idea about Iray lighting (yes - it's really Iray!).
Was meant as a promo ... or maybe I actually used it ???
OUCH!

I have only been using Daz about 3 years now.

I posed a freebie model and tried to make it work out.

Then three years later I am rendering our own characters for a promo.
How time flies!

So, I was having a bit of a reflection on my first Daz render yesterday. It's gonna mark the four-year milestone come Jan 4 since I started dabbling with Daz. And now, stumbled upon this forum, pretty amusing, huh? Time sure does zip by when you're messing around with this stuff.
This is my first render

I named this beauty Rosetta Stone
Then I did two more renders and deleted this software, and then, after about a year or so, I got back into it and have been using it steadily. I never really threw any renders up on socials, but on June 2nd, 2022, I shared my first-ever render on a Discord server and it was this
