The Spartano (CLOSED)
This is my project for the contest: The Spartano.
Based on a real-life spartan armor suit, this character is a monster of the Greek epoch.
I'm trying to write a little story of him:
"The Spartano" was the best greek-spartan army commander in the entire greek land who's killed during a battle close to Persia. Hades gives him another possibility to live but under another aspect: after the resurrection, he will be like a monster, with four arms and a huge and massive body, hard to defeat and with massive energy and force.
In this thread, I'm posting just a PureRef's screenshot of my references, later I'll update it with some news about my character. I'm modeling the character with Zbrush and after I'll make the retopo with Maya and texturing with Painter and rendering in Toolbag. I really hope I can arrive at the end of the contest with a good character! Good luck to everyone!
CONTEST ENTRY DEADLINE EXTENDED TO JANUARY 15, 2021
Some contest participants have been giving feedback that they may not have time to complete their projects, or may have to take shortcuts to make the November 30th deadline.
To relieve some of this anxiety and give artists more time to do the quality job they want, RenderHub has decided to extend the entry period deadline to January 15, 2021.
We thank you all for participating! If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.
That looks like some clean topology. Nice!
FYI: I answered your question over here, too:

Dear Gabriele,
Very impressive. Good luck in the competition.
Interesting to note, even today - most folks know the name of one of Sparta's greatest.
Who?
Marathon - soldier scout who ran back to Athens, to report the victory of the 1000.
Cheers,
Rick.
@itayogev thank you mate. I made the baking with Toolbag 4 with Ray Tracing, is soooooo great!
@RxLnx Thank you for this history pill I already knoow that, the greek history and mitology is my favorite theme of studies
I'm from Sicily and in my island there are the first greek colonies
Goodevening!
Finally, I've finished my character for the challenge, attached the final beauty shots of my character "TheSpartano".
Technically it's a game ready character in a-pose but for the presentation was posed in ZBrush.
I've made the high-poly in Zbrush 2021, the low-poly in Autodesk Maya, the bake (and the rendering) in Marmoset Toolbag 4 with Ray Tracing and textures with Substance Painter 2021.
Shots in high resolution available soon on my https://www.artstation.com/zero3dart">ArtStation and a 3D viewer soon available on my https://sketchfab.com/zero3dart/models">Sketchfab
Dear Gabriele,
Excellent entry and certainly amongst the top 'contenders' seen thus far.
Sicily was one/two of the original Greek states - given the latest archaeological and vulcanological research suggest "Atlantas" was in southern Sicily (you know where).
Spartan and Greek history is rich, and a very good area for character developers (Globally) to consider/research when looking for ideas and inspiration.
Heroes can mean different things to different people. Ion - here - has a (first golden age) Greek hero, not overly capable in matters martial (fighting).
Gentleman by the name of Pythagoras - well known for his contribution to CAD/3D (without him, we would not be here); however less well known for the bulk of his theories and essays - on society, beliefs and social systems/order.
"Precepts of Pythagoras" is a (these days) rare, but good starting point - for insight. Does not include the belief/theory that led to his death.
In his essays on good/responsible social behaviour, he noted it was bad behaviour and very anti-social to tread on peoples crops, or walk/run through their bean fields.
Sadly then - as today - local politics can get nasty. Some folks who disagree with his thoughts were chasing him. His escape route took him up a farm lane to bean crops - where his only exit was through the bean crops.
Pythagoras refused to tread on the bean crops ... and got beaten to death.
Cheers,
Rick.
Dear Gabriele and Ms Foxy,
As mentioned - Greek history and the Golden Ages (3) are rich resources for ideas and inspiration in creating characters and stories.
Can understand why some aspiring artists would not think 'hero' who avoids treading on bean crops is not quite what they want/need ... however could say he was forefather of environmentalists {laugh}.
Is a pleasure to share little historical insights for others in forums who follow artistic work, and artists, plus also read the comments made.
Similarly - is a real pleasure to watch artists at work ... like Gabriele.
Keep well and keep smiling,
Rick.
[Wanders off - wonding if maybe sandals and sword might be under the rock by the path; plus feeling a little tired - maybe stay at inne over there by the cliff, only bit worried legs might be too long for the bed ... {smile}.]
Dear Gabriele,
I meant to mention - that is one seriously good spear (head design).
Would punch holes in any armour or helmet (like the helmet/armour spike on latter day Swiss pole-axes),
and due to the design - would not get stuck.
Very clever - and practical (for blood thirsty warrior types).
Cheers,
Rick.
