Daz Genesis 8 or Genesis 9: What are YOU using in 2025?
-----
It has been over two years since the release of Genesis 9 for Daz Studio, but Genesis 8 is still going strong at RenderHub.
Customers are still purchasing Genesis 8 content, and vendors continue to create for it.
So, what's your base figure of choice for 2025? Are you sticking with Genesis 8, or have you made the switch to Genesis 9?
Please share your thoughts and feedback below!

Interesting question.
Genesis 8 is still a safe bet for many people: Mature generation, lots of content and we still create a lot of it. Economical in the long term but it is slowly starting to age.
Genesis 9 has a lot of content, more recent but with technical difficulties due to its composition. Its content is more recent but also much heavier.
I am looking to take the plunge for Genesis 9 for my personal use, Genesis 8 is starting to become "complicated" in terms of facial expressions for example, but on the other hand I will never find the curves of the G8F... A difficult choice.
Concerning my shop, I would like to do more things for Genesis 9, I had a lot of requests, to redo some of my popular models in G9 version.
But not so much that G8F / M will be reduced in terms of content, it will be I think like "this year" (I arrived in April).
I will also take into account the current situation, in these troubled times, some people cannot afford to change GPU, having to stay on the G8... Nvidia will release its 50 series, we will see what sauce we will be eaten in, the year risks being eventful (again)...
To summarize, 2025 will be like this year, no jealousy the 2 generations will still coexist but with a little more things for the last one.
I will try to optimize and work on the weight of the textures to gain even more in V-ram budget so that no one is forgotten.
Unless Daz makes a surprise announcement announcing a Genesis 10 in the year... XD

With Genesis 10 likely coming Soon™ and Genesis 8 still an active figure with a deep CL that still sees additions, I can see why that's the case.

Wed, Jul 16I saw the clothing converter from g9 to g8, maybe you don't necessarily need genesis 9 with it? Then again, depends on what is a dealbreaker for you.
I use both. They're both good options for me, and vendors here on RenderHub make excellent characters using both types. I also prefer to buy support assets that work for both, though lack of support for one isn't a deal breaker for me. I find that I'm also more inclined to pay a bit more for G9 characters, maybe in recognition that it takes a bit more work on the artist's part.

G8; but I'm just a hobbyist.
What passes for my main characters are G8; but I haven't hit that right look/style yet.. I've tried with G9; but there's too much to buy to catch up.. and then it felt like buying 2nd (or 9th) editions of the same clothes, poses etc.. I picked up MMX G9 clones which lets me buy and (mostly) use unique G9 clothes and hair assets.. Aside: a one liner stating clone compatibility might be a good thing if you're a vendor.
I'm nearing a crossroad though. I haven't updated DAZ in a while.. having bought and use plugins like mesh grabber, 3DU pose symmetry, and 3DU scene tools 1.. they part of my workflow. So, the pay wall rumors have me spooked.
tldr: G8, some G9 (hair and clothes); nervous, may migrate away from DAZ

I use G8 still. G9 is the first generation I've just completely skipped since I got into this field back at the beginning of Genesis 1.
I find that G8 is the modern day equivalent of m4/v4. Was out so dang long that people have a huge library, and it's a workhorse. I'm also just not impressed by G9. It poses pretty awful from what I've seen in the Daz promo photos, and 9 times out of 10 I can't tell the difference between the two generations when it's a generic white or Asian woman that is so popular at the Daz store. There's also a lot of clever "rebranding" of the same technology. It's a whole new torso and new bones! But it's still made of up 4 bones just like the previous generations but with new names. They have new Corrective Blend Shapes! Which are just JCM's, but using the more industry standard name for them. You get the picture.
It's sad that G8.1 didn't get more support as they fixed a lot of small bits and pieces with G8 but still had full compatibility with G8.
I also find the customers still prefer G8 to G9 for what I make here.
My hope is that when G10 comes around they go back to separate male and female bases, and the next figure feels like a real leap forward. I'm sure they'll get the next model right. Genesis 1 lead to Genesis 2, so here's hoping Genesis 9 leads to Genesis 10 soon.

As a DAZ CC in the adult sector, I sell about 3 times as many projects for G9 as for G8. So I should really be jumping on the G9 bandwagon .... but I don't
So I will also try to create projects for G8 as well as G9 in 2025 (as far as possible). And some projects planned for 2025 - which will be a little more fiddly to use due to dForce droppers or decals - will even be suitable for all Genesis versions and genders.

Sun, Dec 15, 2024I've bought some of your G9 clothes. I will buy interesting G9 clothes and hair and use a clone to fit them to a G8 character. Not sure what that does to those sales numbers; but wanted to mention it.
It's Genesis 8/8.1 for me. I'll not be touching Genesis 9 at all, not as a user or even a possible vendor.

Its still 8/8.1 for me. Moving from the Victoria 7 generation to 8 was pretty easy simply because Daz added dynamics around the same time. I tried 9 but it just didn't bring anything to the table for my style of renders.
Honestly, at this point I'll use whatever generation if the assets, accessories, props, smart props are made that I'm lacking for the renders I'm actually have had to put on hold till the items I'm needing are actually made.

I'm just a regular user. I can't create content and I don't want to make money with Daz. I make images from what talented people have created.
As a hobbyist user, Genesis 8 is a winner for me. Genesis 9 lacks something that would make it more human. It's like the basic Genesis. 2 in 1. Not really female and not really male.
I've seen pretty characters in stores for Genesis 9, but there aren't nearly as many accessories for it. Genesis 8 has more accessories, clothes, hair. It's easier to pose.
I'll stick with Genesis 8.

Actually, I'm still mostly using Genesis 3. I could probably never buy another item ever again and still have more than enough toys to play with. I've got all kinds of stuff for Genesis 8, 8.1, and 9 that I've never even downloaded, and if/when DAZ announces Genesis 10, I won't buy any of it -- at least not while DAZ is still going all-in on rent-able content.

While I have "no skin in the game", I experienced this tech rug pull before and it will happen again. It's a cycle that keeps eating itself. No different from any tech advancement. With each step comes more power usage, more memory and storage use, and less human problem solving and interaction.
Like it or not, G8 won't be supported forever. Assets for it won't be made forever. DAZ won't be around forever.

Tue, Dec 17, 2024You really don't have to, though. Not when it comes to a figure. This isn't software or hardware upgrades, it's a figure mesh with rigging.
You really think we're all just going to grab the "latest" DAZ figure whenever it comes out, and shovel out thousands of dollars just to clothe and texture it, every 2-5 years??? Give me the money instead, at least I'd put it to good use.....

I'm primarily G8 still, but this has been the year that my G9 library has started to fill out and so I turn to that figure sometimes. If this ends up like the G3 to G8 transition was for me, that'll keep going for a while until one day I realize I'm primarily G9.

Mon, Dec 16, 2024With some items being both G8 and G9, it'll incidentally fill up. The same will probably happen with G9 and G10.
At least props, scenes, and select objects have a longer shelf life, often lasting multiple generations.

My G9 products here on renderhub have been my best sellers.
Still, in the world of Daz studio, G9 was a solution in search of a problem.
But in typical Daz fashion, demand for it has been artificially created through saturation of the Daz market with G9 products.
But business is business and Daz is just trying survive in a world where we are witnessing the final days of casual hobby users investing thousands in rendering hardware and further thousands in canned 3D content just to make pretty pictures
And we all know why this is.

For sure G8f!
Genesis 9 is a huge backslash in quality and a portrait only figure, just like Victoria 4 used to be.
I might use her to extend the extras zoo for the middle- or background range.

There are some changes to Genesis 9, but I don't see anything that would persuade me to leave Genesis 8, 8.1, as it has been said, Genesis 8 is an established morph, Genesis 9 only complicates matters for designers. Does Daz envisage getting more income from Genesis 9? I must admit I have not spent much time in Genesis 9 but what time I did spend in it didn't inspire me to excitement, perhaps better the devil you know that the one you don't.

I've changed my mind about avoiding Genesis 9 and to be fair I'm actually very fond of it now that I've given it a closer look. I was initially quite rejectful of the mesh design but in fact there are two benefits that I can see.
First of all, the evenly-spaced nature of the polygons is beneficial in creating custom sculpts, presumably because there are no areas pre-defined through topology design, with the position of nipples being a perfect example since they're notably different between male and female. You don't need geografts for the breasts or nipples either by the way, which is something I initially thought was the case but is not so.
But one of the most attractive things about the more uniform polygons of Genensis 9 is that is appears to have fixed those dForce air bubbles that form under tight clothing. Presumably it was the large variance in polygon size that was making it hard for dForce to work properly on the previous figures, because I fitted a bubble-free skin-tight swimsuit to Genesis 9 using dForce that simply would not work on any of the previous generations of figure.
The difference of course is the more evenly-spaced polygons of Genensis 9 so I'm guessing that's the reason, and I'm very surprised that DAZ don't promote the benefit of this aspect of Genesis 9's design, or if they do I must have missed it!
So I'm moving over to Genesis 9 for my own projects and hopefully some vending. I think it renders better, takes custom sculpts better, and since all clothes and hair I have from Genesis 3 and 8 can be made to fit it anyway, it's not as if I need to start buying it all over again. Seriously, I cannot tell you how pleased I am to FINALLY be able to get tight-fitting clothes to work without those damned virtual air bubbles trapped underneath!

Mon, Jan 13You forgot two things: with just two clicks you can give G9 a pair of giant feet (25.5 and higher) and Jack can finally wear Victoria's tube dresses and tutus
Nope - just kidding (hmm... not really ....)
But you're right: there are a few things that are better on G9, such as the morphs for facial expressions. This already started with G8.1 and is almost too much with G9. But now I don't want to do without it anymore and curse when I have to work with G8 and facial expressions ...

At first I had no intention of using Genesis 9, but after a while I decided to try it and it works fine for me. So I use it along with Genesis, Genesis 2, Genesis 3, and Genesis 8. I use the various clones for the generations and I am able to use the clothing on each of the generations that I own. I enjoy working with Daz and all of the Genesis characters and even V4 or M4 occasionally. I also enjoy working with the poser content in Daz. I simply apply the Daz Shaders to get the look that I want.

Genesis 1 mistakenly used an androgynous base figure & did not perform that great.
I don't understand the reasoning in going back to it.
The more I see of G9 the less I like it.
I have always been an early adopter, but G9 didn't look right to me from the get go, so I am pleased I gave it a miss.
G8 / 8.1 F will be fine for me.
If/when we get a G10F, I will be open minded about it.

When Daz split the original G1 into the two sexes, cynical users accused them of just forcing users to have to buy male and female versions of
neutral clothing like police/military gear etc.
Daz defended themselves by claiming that vendors found it too hard to model clothing that would morph correctly in the chest area hence the need for male and female bases.
But G1 had HD morph capability
With G9 they are back to a genderless base with higher vertex count.
yet many PAs have made the same complaint about difficulty in the chest area of G9.
I personally do not render in Daz
and Always send Daz figures to Blender where there rigging is completely replaced with a control rig for animation so the thing that keeps me from using G9 is that I have no need for more figure specific content at this point.

I'm sticking with Genesis 8/8.1. Genesis 9 figure, but in my opinion it's a female shape by default.
The uniform quad mesh is supposed to be adequate enough to sculpt and shape details on the body, but they made a denser-meshed, sculpted breast shape that I have seldom seen dialed out completely for a man's chest that does not look overly defined or leave unattractive ridges.
It seems to me if you wanted to make a figure that would be a good base for unisex clothing, then the default shape of the figure would look more like a body under clothing, not overly defined breasts.
It makes sense to me why a female shape would be the priority for the figure, that is the content that the majority of people seem to prefer.
But, that's not me. I focus on male figures and male content, and Genesis 9 just doesn't deliver for me. Great face and eyes, the chest always looks off.

Fri, May 23G9 base figure looks neither 100% male or female to me. To me, G9 looks like a male OR female that has been on trans-sex hormones for a year.
The majority of characters that I buy are exclusive to G8.1, I'm even resurrecting old G8 scenes to convert them to G8.1! And I'm also buying up G9 character/clothing as well, just last night I was even making new morphs for G3, there is no way that I would limit myself with only one generation of characters!
Like with life, I don't see a binary choice for either character, they have strengths and weaknesses that I love to work with, so both generations are indispensable for me.

Im just a hobbyist , But i do use both G8 and G9. I have hundreds of items for G8 , not so much for G9 , but i do like the expressions you can achieve with G9 you can do just that bit more facial tweaking and get a better result. That been said i do tend to pick G8 as i have more skin textures for that . You can find morphs for G9 but not that many people do skin textures other wise i would proberly use it a bit more.

Mon, Mar 24Great point, I seam to recall improved skin textures being a selling point for G9; but you are right, not many people go beyond the basics for G9. I wonder if there's an increased difficulty in producing them or something else..

For the skins, it may be because (as far as I know) there is no product like SkinBuilder or similar for G9. This means that skins have to be developed for G9 from scratch ... and that is difficult and time-consuming with normal means.
You're both are right about the expressions: G9 beats G8 by far ... but G8.1 already has a lot more to offer than G8.
I have not yet dealt with morphs / expressions for G9 ... but that will certainly come - and maybe I can tell you more then ... or complain

I have done some research on G9 character creation. I'm still in the early stages, but what I can already say is that it's much more detailed. In other words, you can set up a good basis, which of course then has to be fine-tuned in Blender or similar. At the moment I even feel a bit overwhelmed by all the shaping morphs
Skin should definitely be a lot easier than with G8, as there are fewer surface groups. Of course, this plays a major role when skin presets have to be built by hand.
So all in all (what I've seen so far): a bit easier

As a content creator, G9 is a baffling collection of design decisions that feel like a big step backwards to me. Overall feels like a hostile response to basically everything good in the G8 characters. Just way heavier and more difficult to work with both in D|S itself and exporting/importing to external content creation apps. Not even getting into the aesthetics and anatomy. "Subdivide entire figure 3 times to know where the nipples are" etc. Still poor bending at the knee, this long after release. Just baffling, no thanks.

Mon, Apr 07I think if they don't release the version that works with modern cards, it's going to kill daz studio. Lots of people keep upgrading hardware to keep up with the damn bloat of modern programs. If one program in your toolkit doesn't work with your expensive new hardware, it is going to get dropped. People still might use the figures with like diffeomorphic maybe, but the software is going to go nowhere fast.
It turns out the 8k is only for normal maps (the product spec page is a little misleading), but still lmao.

Genesis 8.1 is still the go to option for me and has been since it's release. G8 has the best anatomical content, a ton more backwards compatability than G9. The fact that it's been 2 years since G9 released and you still have to use additional content just to have a normal looking nipple is an absolute joke lol

on that note, *making* anatomical content for G8 is way easier, because the base mesh is significantly lower density, just easier to work with in vertex modeling. and then there's the extra heavy hands and feet (???) why is there this much vertex detail in the base mesh for the fucking **toenails** but nothing for the nipples? just baffling

also look at that 6 edge intersection, that is noob shit topology

Sat, Apr 26LOL. Maybe somebody over at Daz has a foot fetish. Myself, I prefer nice nipples.

I've never really been interested in realism, I just like to try and make the images that pop into my head into art. So I use whatever works, be that V4-V3 -M4-M3-Poser or Vue or DS and G8-G9. I don't think it matters so much what you use as long as you achieve the desired result.

I'm with Daz since V3 and V4.2/M4.
Converted a lot of content up to G3 and G8/8.1.
Started with Poser, Bryce and Carrara. Used Daz only as starting point, when switching to Cinema4D and Vray.
As Blender developed and C4D went to a new payment model, I started to transfer Daz content to Blender. Diffeomorphic is a great tool and G8/G8.1 the perfect base.
So, I do not see any need in upgrading to G9.
I always hoped that Daz would provide a better support of other programs with their next generation.
I'd love to use G10 in Blender without Daz.

G8.1 with G9UVs is the answer for me. With G9, Daz finally managed to get consistently photorealistic skin that looked good in closeups, but they borked the figure morph. Using G8.1 gives me the wealth of morphs from that generation, and CaymanStudios' G9 UVs gives me G9's superior skin and eyes. Unfortunately, it didn't sell well enough to convince him to make a G8M version; so, my men are G3/8.1 at the moment, unless I use stock G9s.

Wed, May 21Well, he did leave the door open--in the event of a surge in sales of his G9UVs product--but he didn't want to give me "false hope." So, get a bunch of people to buy it, and there's a chance. It has really made me happy because I have my favorite morphs, that beautiful G9 skin, but no noodle limbs.

Thu, May 22It's arguable that people buying for G8M need it most. There's so little for male characters compared to female, we have to be more resourceful. But if a PA isn't going to get the ROI they need out of something, I can't balme them for not doing it.

Thu, May 22You're right. Luthbel. Mal3Imagery, & Mada have slowed releases, and they made my favorite male gear. It looks like the party's over. I would loooove to have G9 skin for G8M because I own all these great morphs, am able to make the faces and somatotypes I want, get the character projecting personality, and then... the closeup with G8 not-ready-for-photorealism skin. But I decided a few years ago that the story was the main thing; so, my disappointment with G9 wasn't so deflating, and after ai made any quest for 3D photorealism moot, I was further confirmed.
With Genesis 8 and my nVidia 4090, I have enough power and quality that I don't need to use Genesis 9, which is much heavier to handle, and I can't afford an nVidia 5 right now.
I get the impression that what DAZ is looking for with version 2025 and G9, or perhaps G10, since G9 is not getting the acceptance they expected, is to get monthly fees and prevent anyone from using DAZ for free.
Even less so, they don't want us to use material that isn't from their store. The competition from RenderHub and Renderosity must sting them more than they'll admit. I understand their desire to make more profit, it's human, but don't count on me, I'm a poor retiree.
When Photoshop started charging monthly fees for its program, I had already been working with Gimp, which is free, for years. I don't use Office 365 either, I use Open Office, and sometimes Office 7, which I tried to get a legal license for, but the folks at Microsoft refused to sell it to me, telling me I had to subscribe to Office 365.
I guess that will happen soon. Windows will also be based on monthly fees, which is why I am familiarizing myself with Linux, which is not that difficult to use, and this is coming from a 70-year-old man.

Fri, May 16That is the prudent decision. ALl this content already purchased and still usable with IRay, why not keep using it? G8,G7,G6 and original genesis too. I even use v4 and M4 textures on Genesis1, with the iray skin converter. It works well for secondary characters and crowds.
I really have lost all patience with G9.
It is far too bloaty, time consuming & fiddly.
For my purposes, it does nothing as well as G8F, even after all the investment of all that time & money.

Mon, May 19Yes, I've tried to morph G9 into something apealing, but it didn't work for me.
Her default bodyshape and the base female are to faulty. It is to fiddly to correct her shoulders, arms and spine.
Obviously, no content creator wants to mess with that, because almost every character available still has those shape issues.
It doesn't really matter on male characters, that's why I thing G9 is pretty much a male figure.

One solution to go on with G9 for me could be by using this figure as extras at base resolution. Maybe as a second character in the scene.
I'd purge every _not ROXY relevant_ G8F and G8M characters by this and save disc space.

For me, the figures are just something to hang clothes off of. I started way back with the first release of Poser and Possette. Vicky Four was the sweet spot, hung around a long time and had (and still has) the biggest and most varied closet. Since then it's been sci-fi and fantasy stuff, with styles seeming to circle the same sort of thing. G8 has become the new Vicky Four and will likely remain quite popular.

Sun, Jul 06It makes sense, from DAZ' point of view. They've invested in a new base figure, and they want their share from people selling at their marketplace.
I cannot point out enough, how much of a fail G9 is to me.
Again, just last weak I purchased some G9 characters and stuff to get into it, but no.
Really the worst figure since Victoria 4, which I just hated.

I just found a lot of stuff I made ages ago for g3 male and female, also some for g2. Some of it will get converted to g8 and 9 but the original g3 costumes will be released.
I think there's life still in the old figures especially in a big scene with many characters. Using the older figures in the background is ideal in many ways and more realistic than using billboards.
Updating bump and normal maps can breath new life into the old figures. With a few scripts g3 can use any generation of clothing and use g8 hd textures so I still find it very useful.
Anyone want any g3 clothes and props?

easy to handle. Also are the texturefiles really big and not better as G8. Whatfor is a 4k texture good if you see no effort against 1k ?????
If you rendertime is too long, switch down the size to a better val.
I stay with G8 as long as the G10 is better than this.

I will spend the next month watching reviews about the new Character Creator 5 by Reallusion.
The question will be, if it is worth switching over from DAZ.
I feel stuck with DAZ and the main reason is G9.
I just don't feel home at DAZ anymore. If there are possibilities in CC5 to get ROXY over there and create some JCM equivalents, that look at least as realistic to what I have now, then I am seriously tempted.
CC5 has announced a really cool looking skin material system.

I'll have to verify. I'll wait for the version 5 update though.

First I was hesitant using G9, also since I have a HUGE G8 library. I am a USER, neither a vendor or programmer, but I am getting sick and tired of vendors whining about how difficult G9 is. By now there is enough content (again have amassed 200 characters) and after using it for a long while I don't want to go back.
Admittedly some aspects are more challenging (eyes, nipples and navels), and the gender neutral base was a surprise after the somersault backwards with the previous attempt. But expressions are much better. The biggest drawback is the lack of real downward compatability, mainly with the skins. Clothes and hair are manageable. And the denial of vendors that time moves on. And indeed some will want to hop on the bandwagon shortly before G10 comes out.

Probably not a new observation at this point, but I can't name a problem with Genesis 8 that 9 resolves. At a stretch, one can argue that there is more control over facial expressions, but in my calculus this doesn't outweigh the pain in the nuts it takes to apply 9's assets to Genesis 8, which still meets my needs in most ways that matter.
Do I use 9? Sure; there are some quality assets for it. But those I do use are used grudgingly. Daz's heavy-handed pressure to fully migrate to 9 is not giving me what I want. Creeping enshittification is a real thing.
