I answer my question
I'm really looking for a gendered character, so there'd be a male version and a female version whose sex isn't a graft.

I would say that Genesis 8 is the first, regardless of gender.
Because men and women are not equal, which is obvious, Genesis 9 is the worst option to choose because they wanted to merge both genders into one.
Genesis 9 was intended to be an evolution and it has ended up being a regression, in my opinion.

Sun, Jan 05I agree with the G8 vs G9 comparison, but I was thinking for a next version.
I'm waiting for a real gendered character, not an optional gender.
In my character search there is necessarily a man and a woman.

"Ideal version of Genesis"
One that is backwards compatible (via the model design or updates to Daz Studio itself) with all/most previous versions. G9 is not (out of the box) compatible with G8 expressions, poses, and a small number of clothes (I have issues with buttons flying off). G8.1 expressions are not (out of the box) compatible with G8 expressions.
"for a next version"
I would be ok with 3 base models: Male, female, and uni-mesh. It would be nice if Daz could use the uni-mesh base to recapture some of the toon-like magic from earlier figures and update them for modern marketplace items. I'm also ok with grafted gender bits.. it allows for stylistic differences based on venders and can be removed when not needed (ouch). More soft-body grafts would be neat.
"What do you expect from a character that really gives you satisfaction"
I tend to kit bash characters (character designers should look away now). Significant deviation from the base model (a lot of G8M are very close to the base model when superimposed). Bodies and heads are subjective and interchangeable, I prefer ones that are close to my vision without the need for extra morphs. But satisfaction is finding a good skin with interesting details (most are a little too perfect for my tastes) and that takes lighting well (doesn't turn grey).. that is a treasure.

Don't know if it's possible, but a mix of Genesis 2 with Victoria/Michael 4 topology sounds like a step in the right direction.

Sun, Jan 05Thanks for the suggestion, but I forgot to mention that I don't have the skills to make a character as complex as a human.
Many Daz Studio users are disappointed with Genesis 9 for various reasons, but I thought it would be interesting to hear their thoughts on their dream character.

Wed, Jan 08I agree that G8 is probably the best version of Genesis yet, but the idea is to find out what the G8 generation lacks to have a character that is truly better than G8.
I'd like to see Daz go back to male and female versions. (Hello Daz3D - Are you listening? You screwed this one up.)
Soft body physics. Clothing and hair that work without a bunch of screwing around.
And definitely none of this stuff requiring a subscription! I'll pay a fair price for content, but I'm not going to be locked into a sub to use it.

Wed, Jan 08I get the impression that Daz has been going into reverse lately: the G9 Generation is an improvement on the G1, but a step backwards compared to the G8. When you stop an Iray render with version 4.23, you can no longer resume it, whereas this was possible until version 4.22.
As for timeline animation, it's best not to mention it, as it's a real nightmare.
Unfortunately, I'm afraid that they only listen to shareholders instead of customers and users, which is unfortunately a failing of many companies.

Wed, Jan 08I'm on 4.23 and pause/cancel and resume my Iray renders all the time, especially the 10+ hour ones. I can't say I'm remembering right but I do remember the resume button being next to the cancel button and now its on the left side of the render screen, at least for me.

Wed, Jan 08Thank you for this information, which I've just discovered!
I don't understand the point of moving the tools when making a new version.
Microsoft has got into the habit of placing the buttons at the bottom right of dialog boxes, so that for many users it's become a reflex to find the buttons for the dialog box there.
It would be good if there were finally a standard and that everyone followed it. In my opinion, turning software into a treasure hunt is not a good idea.
I also missed the “morebutton, which displays parameters.

Wed, Jan 08Glad I could help! I actually had the same issue originally but got lucky and noticed it before I closed the window down.
Honestly, G8.1 is good enough for me and I can pretty much cover most of the bases in terms of clothing and characters for the type of renders I do. It's probably going to take realistic softbody physics and vendors making the actual types of clothing and props/accessories to get me to move on. As of now the Daz verse just feels like rinse and repeat.

Genesis 2 topology with a Genesis 8 shape with one more spine and left- right glute group.s.
No gender base mix.
Some kind of options, to have nice expressions for every character, not just the base figure.
(Sorry, but that is just me:
Included detailed natomical accuracy“ I mean really accuracy, not just Victoria 3 level accuracy
fully rigged, of course. )

I might have completely missed the point.
hat would…“ sounds hypothetical to me,.
If you wanted to know, What IS my favorite Genesis figure, then the answer is G8f.

For me:
Soft fabrics for realistic limb reactions with muscles, etc.
A generation with three characters: female, male, and neutral: something for everyone.
Shape type and topology, a bit like Genesis 8 (I didn't experience the previous generations).
Expressions are more fun to use and more realistic.
Dedicated bones for the chest and buttocks (for animation, etc.).
Basic genitals: more practical for creating clothing and accessories.
I think that's already pretty good. XD

Sat, Apr 19I totally agree, if Daz announced the next version with these criteria, that would be excellent news!
G8 is my go to but recently I have been using g3 especially if there are multiple characters in the scene. If you want a crowd or lots of people it would be useful to have the next generation character be much more diverse. In other words having a very low poly version with matching materials for background and distant characters. A hd version for close details and expressions is fantastic but being able to use the same figure as a low res would enable some epic scenes.
This render has my HD sculpted Kaolin character , 5 or more g3 male and female, about the same with g2 and at least 8 low res people from predatron.
Also is a billboard of a crowd mixed with the people to make the crowd even denser.
To be able to do this with one character would save so much time.

Just my opinion, But the Daz genesis figure tech peaked with genesis 8.1
Although G9 has been extremely lucrative for me as vendor
,in the pantheon of genesis figure evolution G9 is a "solution" in search of a problem.
As a figure for still portrait/pinup rendering in Iray the genesis figures have nowhere left to go….no where.
I could make all kinds of suggestions for improved animation abilities but those largely involve changes needed to the core Daz studio application itself which Daz will never implement to any degree that would appeal to the professional game/film animation industry.
