Boring Three-Point Lighting Render
3D Render by Luxe MuseI just finished redoing her skin normals, retouching her color maps, specular, bump, and displacement maps, and separating the adult from the teen versions. For her adult version, I made a few alterations to the color maps, which obviously has more options, although it is not significantly different. The differences are more noticeable in the normal maps, bump maps, and obviously the adult features that pop more so than the color map.
I added more JCMs and rebuilt a few that looked weird. I also changed her appearance a little (very small changes), and her adult figure was retouched as well.
Here you can see the maps for her tween version, with and without freckles. These renders do not have displacement maps, however. I have included them, but I think the normal and bump maps already do a nice job.
The last image is Alexa Young Adult.

If I had yawned any louder, my dentures would have fallen out.

Nope - just kidding
I think it's great how much effort and time you put into getting your characters just right. Not many people do that!
Thanks for sharing
Right ... now let me yawn again, then I can continue

Sat, Oct 04Thank you so much, Pushee-Ri. It is true that I might not be the best, but I do put my all into it, during late nights while everyone is finally asleep, and during the few hours I have after returning from work before the children come home from school. I enjoy every minute of it, especially when I discover something new that I can incorporate into my workflow. Although I am sure every creator here reads this and thinks, yes, we all are the same, Luxe, welcome to the club, hi, hi, hi.
"Three-Point Lighting? More Like Three-Point Slaying"
Oh sure, call it "boring" three-point lighting while casually dropping a technical masterclass like you're just reheating leftovers. Nothing says "humble" quite like separating normal maps, retouching displacement channels, and rebuilding JCMs as if you're just doodling on a napkin.
Really love how you "slightly altered" the appearance - yeah, and Michelangelo "slightly altered" some marble. The freckle variants? Chef's kiss. The specular work? Spec-tacular. (I'll see myself out, but I'm taking these renders with me.)
The way you've aged her up with those subtle feature pops while keeping the color maps "not significantly different" - that's like saying you "barely tried" while simultaneously lapping everyone else twice. The caucasity... I mean, audacity of calling this boring when you've clearly been on a multi-year quest for photorealistic perfection.
Luxe Muse? More like Luxe Refuse - to accept anything less than flawless skin topology, apparently. Those normal and bump maps are doing the heavy lifting so well, the displacement maps are filing for unemployment.
TL;DR: Stop trash-talking your own work when you're out here making 3D artists question their life choices. This is "boring" the way a Lamborghini is "just a car."

Sat, Oct 04You are an explosion of nice things, DD, but then again, I can't expect any less from someone who makes her craft shine through and has an eye for what is beautiful. I love every character you do, and you inspire me to try to get back to working with G8, which I have already started planning. I can't wait to have my new design ready to share with you all, but it will take a little longer.

Sat, Oct 04Oh stop it, Luxe - you say that like you're not out here casually reverse-engineering human evolution in normal map form. The fact that you call this 'boring' lighting is wild - your 'boring' renders still look like a Vogue cover shot on a NASA budget.
And hey, I totally get wanting to jump back into G8 land - she's got that timeless charm. But real talk… why not play both sides? Convert the G9s back to G8 and drop a dual release. Half the crowd still worships G8 like it's the Renaissance. Plenty of folks are doing it - kinda the best of both geometry worlds.
If you haven't seen it, this tutorial breaks it down really well:

Honestly though, Luxe, your work's been aging like your renders - smoother every year, with the bump maps to prove it. You don't just 'make skins,' you make the rest of us question our shader settings and life choices at the same time.

Sat, Oct 04Oh, wow, thank you, DD!
I want to make G8 and G9, but after I made Hanna for G8 and was about to start her G9 version, I was so exhausted that I never went through with it. I will try this workflow. I would still need to repaint for G8 and G8.1, but that is fine. I will approximate as best I can.

Sat, Oct 04Details I can skinwrap in blender, and build displacements from it for the target shape (skinwrap is not perfect for unmatching geometry but I'll manually re-touch where it breaks).

Mon, Oct 06See, that's where you lose me, Luxe - you start talking about skinwraps in Blender and my brain just quietly backs out of the room like, 'nope, that's above my render grade.' I barely survive a normal map bake without questioning reality.
But honestly, I think there are a few tricks floating around for using G9 skins on G8s (and vice versa) without going full Blender Jedi mode. Might be worth a peek before you dive into another repaint marathon. Still - the fact that you even think in terms of displacement rebuilds and geometry matching says it all. You're basically running a 3D anatomy lab over there while I'm just trying to find which folder my specular maps disappeared into.
Can't wait to see what your next experiment brings - your work always looks like it escaped from a high-end digital museum anyway
