The Door Into Summer
3D Render by scifierInspired by the mythic science fiction of Stargate and the quiet inevitability found in The Door into Summer, this work explores a single irreversible moment—crossing a boundary that should never have been crossed.
The scene unfolds in a forgotten frozen world. Broken columns rise from the snow like remnants of a lost civilization, surrounding an ancient gate that still breathes with energy. The portal opens not into another place, but into another season—summer.
Beneath the gate, butterflies are frozen. Their fragile forms suggest movement, warmth, and life abruptly interrupted. They appear to have come from the summer world beyond the portal, crossing briefly into winter—by curiosity or by mistake—only to be claimed by the cold.
The summer world visible through the portal is grounded in reality: it is based on my own photograph taken in 2023 in Somerset. By blending a real memory with a fictional environment, the portal becomes not only a gateway between seasons, but between worlds—one lived, one imagined.
The environment and animation were created in Unreal Engine. Snow, fog, and portal effects were developed using Blueprints, Niagara, and volumetric materials. Butterflies were sculpted in ZBrush, re-meshed in Maya, and textured in Substance Painter. Architectural elements were modelled in Maya and textured in Substance Painter. Final animation editing was completed in Adobe Premiere.
This piece reflects on fragility, choice, and the quiet cruelty of transition—where even a moment of warmth can become a permanent memory.
