Worker Satisfaction
3D Render by DClawHe was an old space dog, and the company had taken nearly everything from him.
For more than 50 years, on this station and the one before it, the company had profited from his work and the work of others like him…demanding everything from him. And he had given it…his blood and sweat…his time and energy…his life and his future.
He lived a solitary existence. Outside of a few coworkers with whom he occasionally spent time in the cantina after his shift, he had no friends…no family…no one he loved, and no one who loved him. This was true for most of the people who worked on the station. No one could compete with the demands of the job, so no one did. The company had taken that from him, too.
But recognizing that workers who feel satisfied in their lives are more effective in their work, the company would occasionally give something back.
She was called Ai.
She was waiting for him in his quarters when he returned from his shift. When he saw her standing there in her sheer, little, green dress, the wear and exhaustion on his face changed first to surprise, then quickly to anticipation and excitement.
“Hello, she said, “I’ve been waiting for you.
For the next few hours, she gave him what he needed to sustain him…a sense of love, companionship, and satisfaction. She allowed the young man inside the old and aching body to come out and play…to feel beautiful and desired…to feel as if the future was full of possibilities…to share in his experiences with him...and, of course, to satisfy his biological, evolutionary impulse.
When his alarm woke him, he got out of bed, cleaned himself up, and put on a new jumpsuit for a new shift. He bent down to give her a kiss goodbye as she lay in his bed, and she kissed him softly back.
“Have a great day at work.she whispered to him.
“Thanks,he replied, “I will,and kissed her again.
As the door closed and he began his walk down the hallway, he knew that what had just happened wasn’t real…that she wasn’t real…not really. He knew that she wouldn’t be waiting for him in his quarters when he returned from his shift…that she would let herself out just as she had let herself in. He knew that it would be weeks, probably, before he would see her again, and that she didn’t really love him…she was just doing her job.
But there was a smile on his face and a buoyancy about his walk as he headed off to work that hadn’t been there the day before. And he felt…satisfied.
