Sometimes I am looking for an item and there is a user that makes a lot of products that are outside what I am looking for. It would be nice if I could have a way to "hide items from this user" without blocking them entirely, just for a single browsing session or a few hours. Just to cut down on the needle in a haystack effect of overwhelming items.

The coders decided not to include a "temporary hide" version of the block feature when that was implemented.
Unfortunately, that means you'll need to make it temporary yourself by blocking, then unblocking later.
Don't worry, though... Users don't get a notification when you block them. You can block and unblock at your convenience without anyone knowing.
