A New Chapter

It's time to let the cat out of the bag. There's a very good reason why my creative posts pretty much slowed to a crawl. Since May, I had been prepping for a move from Florida to Ohio. It was a very stressful time, as my brother was selling his Rhode Island house and buying a house in Ohio at the same time. But both finally closed in late September. So, I was in a "holding pattern" for months.
For the past three weeks I have been working on the Ohio house, all the "emergency" stuff is pretty much done now. The seller of the house here really messed up the floors, so I had to lay down cheap indoor/outdoor carpet as a temporary measure until we're able to replace everything with vinyl plank. He also oversprayed all the windows when he painted the exterior, so I had to scrape all 13 awning windows to get them working again. Took me a weekend just geting my bedroom straight. I've had to do other things, like repair the 240 volt dryer outlet, and several lights. Lots of stuff done by me and my brother. It's a good thing that I have a lot of general skill and knowledge with stuff like plumbing and electric (I'm an electrician by trade, and have been a mechanic/facility person for 26 years). He cleared away a ton of brush and built stairs for the bulkhead while I was fixing doors inside that wouldn't shut.
Along with this, is the start of a journey in 3D printing and laser engraving. My brother has 3 printers and a laser engraver. And tonight I engraved my first piece: a wooden plaque which I bought as a stand for one of my garage kit figures. I engraved Sailor Mercury's symbol along with the character's name in the Sailor Moon font, just a simple design but a good proof of concept for more custom figure/model stands. It looks great.
So I wasn't kidding when I said I was branching off into areas like CAD. I made a prototype addon part for a bowling pinspotter back in March and now I'm learning laser engraving on wood. I'm going to be the design leg of my brother's 3D printing and engraving business. Add that to an already full plate of art stuff I am messing around in. I swear if I concentrated on just one thing I'd be dangerous.

We're hosting a maker's event at the Boardman Ohio Michaels this Saturday, and I'm taking this to the event to show as an example of what we can wood engrave with plaques bought at Michaels

Thu, Oct 16The result is pretty, I sincerely think that this kind of decorative piece will find buyers, it remains to be determined whether they will be unique pieces, in small numbered series etc.

Fri, Oct 17I've been thinking a lot about figure bases, model kit bases, custom plaques for collectible cards, mailbox signs and house signs. I know someone back in Florida who makes custom house signs using a cnc machine. My brother thinks that a lot of what we could sell will be from the 3D printing side but wood engraving has always fascinated me. I ran some experiments with mixed results, I'll be bringing all the examples to the maker's event. I think once we recalibrate the machine and clean the lens we'll get better cuts.
*chuckle* I hear you. I've been in my present house for 23 years and rebuilt EVERYTHING! The wiring was a huge mess and scary in places. Like you, I'm a trades-person with a variety of skills. I'd hate to think how much it would have cost to have people do everything I've done. Surprisingly, the easiest job was installing a metal roof. The panels are clumsy to work with but they go down fast!

Fri, Oct 17Made some electrical repairs already, they would have cost us hundreds
All it cost me was a few hours and a 17 dollar light fixture so far. This building does need updated wiring, a lot of it is original with no ground. Old work sucks but at least the wires were run in the floor joists, the big pain will be in replacing the boxes.
My brother's pretty good at the yardwork stuff, some carpentry. I can do plumbing, electrical, and a lot of indoor repair stuff.
