Good news! the next big fad will be shooting GPU farms up into space, so at the end of their 4-5 year life cycle they can be de-orbited and burn up, leaving nothing! You won't have to worry about last generation tech cluttering up the market and watering down prices!

Tue, Dec 23, 2025I thought the disappearance of these materials would also free us from the growing grip of computers and their derivatives.
As for time travel, I think it's plausible to go into the future, but I find it hard to imagine going back to the past; going back before our birth is difficult to conceive.

It's good to have interests that don't involve computers in any shape or form. I have real books for reference, tools, materials etc etc.

I honestly believe that we are entering the era of the remote "dumb" terminal device
where all of the actual hardware computing is done on massive servers. Somewhere far away or even on orbital satellites, perhaps.
Software always advances faster than the hardware required to execute it properly.
Traditional software has likely already hit a technological wall that can only be surmounted with the addition of neural networks, machine learning and LLM's
( so-called AI.)
The problem is that running many of new "AI enhanced "software typically requires hardware that is going to be increasingly out of the reach of most ordinary consumers.
Certainly out of the reach of younger newbies that are going to be required to keep these softwares in business as the older people die off and move on.
I think major 3D animation and VFX studios
running programs like Maya and Houdini. will be okay for a little while simply because their legacy systems are very slow to change.
However, on the ,amateur ,hobbyist, middleware software scene, the hardware costs of entry is going to become increasingly unsustainable for individuals. when you literally need to spend thousands on hardware just to run software like Daz studio or iclone.
And still be completely unable to create any output similar to what you would get from Maya or Houdini, which basically has the same hardware requirements.
NVIDIA has probably decided. that it is no longer profitable trying to sell GPU's to ordinary consumers at $1000 to $2000 a piece and has moved on to enterprise solutions (data centers.)
Out of the general population, the percentage of people who would actually even buy a pc with a $1000 GPU to run software such as Daz, Blender or Iclone is already relatively miniscule by comparison.
And the video game, user base has long since accepted the reality of more and more titles being " live service" games, needing to be connected to a remote server to play the games .
I honestly, really do not see where the next generation of Daz studio, Iclone , Blender or poser user is going to come from.

Tue, Dec 23, 2025nvidia is dropping the customers that made them.. for insane profit, period. Corporations are just big, ugly rectums that eat anything in sight.
Screw iray.. daz should goto vulcan and save us from this excrement... but, they won't, look at where they're based... they won't do shit for their base either.
I want to see some small indies start mucking with GPUs

Even the traditional non AI render farms of today.
However, considering the amount of AI. Fetish renders flooding Deviant Art. I'm pretty sure that most people will be able to find an AI that will generate their particular "kink" as long as one is willing to pay.

Wed, Dec 24, 2025that anti AI sentiment might exist here, in this small microcosm of 3D hanger-ons, but out there in the world of the unwashed untalented masses, AI is spreading like wildfire. The battle is already lost.

Wed, Dec 24, 2025sure, as long as it's heavily subsidized by a trillion dollars of circular investments to try to get mass adoption, if you look into what it actually costs to run the stuff, I really doubt people will be willing to pay Maya prices for chatgpt access when they try to make it self sustaining.
If the industry moves to a 'massive server -dumb terminal' model then home user's had better get used to sleeping during the day and working at night.
The big players will be buying up all the processing power for their staff during the working day, Home users will be 'allowed' some time on the system during the night, so long as there is no maintenance scheduled. This is just like the days when universities had their first computers, and people with less prestigious projects would always get pushed to the back of the queue for computing time.
Ai is a glorified toy, and once the novelty wears off it will be put back on the shelf, just like last years kids toys. Tough luck to anyone left holding shares is Ai companies ( or having Ai business as a major customer ) when that happens.

Wed, Dec 24, 2025Sounds sound to me Jacko. Brings up the question, would they restrict access by home builts? And when will an always ON camera be mandatory on monitors? Big Nabisco is Watching You.
ROFLMAO!
I like your interpretation of AI fascination. And when that bubble crashes and repugnicans move to SAVE the dumbF#k companies, I want to see a majority kick that idea into the gutter... and the lovely videos that will sprout... you know, that rainshower of disgraced CEOs and CCOs falling from very tall buildings. Shit, makes me giddy.

Wed, Dec 24, 2025AI employees don't need sleep. they'll be 24/7 and leave the rest of the rabble in ther hovels dreaming of the good ol' days.
I think also, a massive server which multiple companies rely on will be a massive magnet for hackers and ransomware target.

Wed, Dec 24, 2025The bottom line as some companies that have internal servers for ... whatever reason have proven conclusively that not only will they refuse to pay for the robust security teams needed, but, will almost always produce a lesser 'experience' for their customers.
Not to mention many trying to get subsidies and tax breaks for the energy usage. Let alone the frequency of "passing the cost on to the community".
I for one don't welcome our corporate overlords, I mean shit, you ever look at a CEO? Even at my age I could step all over one of those walking gasbags.. their culture sees power only in the boardrooms where you don't display the heads of your enemies and instead showoff your office location and yearly salary. Just a bunch of whiney little greedbuckets of trustfunds and backstabbing.
Hang 'em all, slowly.... very goddam slowly.
I remember when I was living on the LES back in the 80s and decided to finally run uptown and take a look at trumpf tower... I managed about 1 minutes walking in, turned around and almost ran out before it caused me to puke all over ... which now I wish I'd done.
Years later I returned to ny to take a look at my old stomping grounds and ... mcdonald's had a fucking uniformed doorman. All the bodegas were gone and replaced with chrome and glass excrement; NY's soul had been consumed.

Greg Egan's 'Permutation City' has some interesting insights into Ai and virtual Reality, and what it would be like to live inside such a society ( though I'm not convinced by his 'dust' theory ).

In all honesty I don't see most people adopting or even using ai, not even casually. Search engines chat bots and similar llm have a gimmick value but the interest soon wares off for many people. The modern need for validation via likes and shares on social media is an addiction and some see ai as a means to be popular particularly in "art and music". This is a false and even narcissistic trick that ironically the narcissist in need of validation are playing on themselves. People claiming to be artist, animators and hard surface model makers, sculptors and experts in 3d are desperate for some sort of social acceptance and the ai will reinforce that mindset. It's quite simply fake and will not stand the test of time.
It reminds me a lot of the season all music festivals in the UK were eco friendly and used bio diesel. The reality was that 90 percent of the generators in the industry failed. we had to drain the tanks and flush the dirty bio diesel out before replacing with normal fuel. Just imagine the work for us with 90 percent of gen-sets broken down during live events. A small event for say 8 thousand guests uses around 40 generators. That size show only has 4 or 5 engineers. 3 years later we still had generators fail due to the previous bio diesel wrecking the engines.
Intention and reality are two very different things and I don't see ai in it's current forms lasting the test of time. Unless of course it is used to control and limit our potential and opportunists. The 4th industrial revolution has one thing very different from the previous industrial revolutions, necessity. There is no trade route or real products involved, only short cuts and efficiency of control.
Positive effects:
I'm now at 7 paintings on canvas sold and local interest in my work is growing. I have an exhibition next June. I find myself stocking up on brushes, canvas, paints and charcoal rather than adding to my 3d wish list. I have over 250 re worked and freshly painted 3d models ready to sell in the spring plus my indy driving game. I don't need or want to use any ai and that is what my patrons / customers expect from me.
Show me someone who wants to buy ai art and I will be forced to reconsider my thinking.

Wed, Dec 24, 2025Painting.. that, is tres kewl bonj... grats! And believe me, I'm quite familiar with the 'artist's life' so to speak. Bak on LES I worked a little cabaret / club doing the door. My scrawny ass was security and money taking, oh that was hilarious. Paid and they kept me fed with beer and JD and the customers kept me doinked out of my skull... good times. I met soooo many wonderful artists from Martin Wong to Popo and the Gogo Boys. I've also seen the ramifications of that deep dive into what they love and what it can do to you; usually not pretty but sometimes the art won.
I'm still fucking around with music again and have had fun again, for once. We'll see. I have no compulsion to even consider trying to sell m;y daz stuff.. I do it purely for my own joy and to slap in people's faces now and then.
Oh, and Keith Haring was an asshole. ROFLMAO!

For my part, I no longer make a prognosis. In 1980, I was learning cooking, and it was the beginnings of fast food and hamburgers in France, I claimed that it was a trend that would last for a flash. France, the country of gastronomy, a hamburgers could not work. 45 years later, new fast food are still opening...
As a guess, I am bad so on the AI I prefer to be a spectator

Wed, Dec 24, 2025@Vince You had some good times and great memories. That's what makes a rich man. Art can be a killer especially when mixed with other substances as you pointed out often the art wins. I'm not doing the music circuit now day's so lost touch with many of the regular faces. Still in touch with a few great characters tho.
@guy Food certainly isn't as good as it used to be when you eat out. Not many places cook real fresh food here unless it's a top restaurant or hotel and a lot of that is mas produced catering stock. You have to get out into the country side where I am to get local produce cooked in local restaurants. Mainly it's due to speed and efficiency, a bit like the ai situation
I have nothing against ai. or people that use it, I don't want to use it as I like to improve and learn all the time. I don't want to pay for ai. I don't want to compete with it either but if I must then I must.
Have a great Christmas everyone
