In the news twice recently was windows updates breaking pc's. also taking away local accounts.

Gibson Research made this one click and change 6 registries stopping the automatic operating updates. You still get key security patches so windows may still F... you but it's worth doing even if you manually update after you test if the windows update is safe. (what has the world come too).
Your operating system is under your control.
I still run 10 and it stopped the forced upgrade to 11 constantly getting in my face

I love these folks and use their software. My internet computer still runs Win7 like a charm and gives me no problems. My graphics computer which DOESN'T go online runs a hacked version of Win10 which has all the crap ripped out of it.

Mon, Jan 26Thanks Bob, This rig is still on 7 because of all the work still on it and I like 7 the most. Especially with all the driver updates and tweaks over the years it is a faster operating system then both my win10 rigs.
Sadly I have to stay updated with the unreal stuff if I want to make my projects but I feel better taking the new pc online after running incontrol. A tech at college gave me a copy of sytinternals way back in the 90's and it's been with me since. Another great GRC set of tools.

A few months ago, I bought copies of Win98 2nd Ed., WinXP w/SP3, and Win7 Pro (all of which can be installed without having to connect to one of Microsoft's servers) off of eBay, and I'm trying to buy up as much retro tech as I can. There's really very little that I need to be on the cutting edge of technology for.

Sun, Jan 25In some cases, Linux is an interesting alternative for using old PCs, offering unbeatable value for money

Sun, Jan 25I've never used Linux, but I'm seriously considering it, just like a lot of people right now.

Mon, Jan 26your not alone, I know of several people doing the same and also collecting dvd's cd's and of course books. I have collected so many pdf books but there's nothing like the real thing.
I do have enough parts to build an older setup to run linux but it's a lot of effort when your busy doing other things.

Thanks so much! Downloaded and installed. My laptop recently suddenly up and died after an update. I have been wondering since then if the update killed it.

Sun, Feb 15Keeping the auto pc breaking updates out is madness but I'm glad you can keep your pc safe from them now

After another instance of windows turning it's updates back on, installing updates, and rebooting in the dead of night when my PC was busy doing work, I decided I am done with windows. It was in th middle of a days long simulation, lost days of work, fuck that OS.
Switched over to arch linux XFCE a few weeks ago. A bit of some new learning to get stuff to work, but now the only things I haven't gotten working is photoshop and zbrush. Trying to use krita instead of PS, and any sculpting I need inside blender from now on. Linux is a lot better now than the last time I tried it years ago, I guess valve has been putting in a lot of work getting wine and such working a hell of a lot better. Have gotten daz studio, substance painter, my CNC stuff, my 3d printing stuff, all working. Even got my regular printer hooked up, all that stuff I couldn't get working last time, I rage quit and went back to windows then. Much better experience this time around, at least when I figured out wayland was the reason my stuff wasn't working, once I installed XFCE, stuff magically worked.

Sun, Feb 15I will get around to it, Just so busy with so many other things right now it's on the back burner again. My son got into college so helping him is taking up loads of time.
This is one of the most useful things I've downloaded in a long time.
I have an ooold laptop that keeps wanting to update windows but it has insufficient memory to do so and always has an annoying process I need to go through at the start to dismiss the update compulsion in its tiny little computer brain.
Now it turns on and can get to work quickly and smoothly.

Sun, Feb 15lol. Yes I have a half build rig for linux. It's not very good for developing games tho.. Lots of extra work involved to make it play well. So I'm sticking on 10 until my base game is finished and then will port it across to 11 and linux.
