Thumbnails
35Would it be possible at all to have the option to choose the whole image uncropped as our thumbnail and start making the gallery look like an actual gallery?
Its really difficult choosing a good thumbnail for some posts, and I'm sure many would agree especially with how limited the current cropping can be, At the very least more control over the cropping in general would bring more satisfaction.

I think the gallery grid is way too set at this point for thumbnails that don't fit the grid.
And yeah, the square doesn't necessarily fit the crops of a number of images - it can get really annoying when the ideal crop is just beyond the thumbnail's proportions! - but it does allow for the gallery grid to be what it is and do what it does.

As MKDAWUSS already mentioned: it's about the overall look of the gallery. If rectangular images (portrait or landscape) were mixed with square images, the rectangular thumbnails would need padding around the edges (background)... and that looks (in my opinion) unattractive. There are many examples of such mixed galleries... and none of them really look convincing (in my opinion).
Have you ever tried rendering in a square format? If so, there won't be any problems, since almost the entire image can be used as a thumbnail.
