I posted this in the DAZ forum, but I don't have a lot of faith in the folks over there. I'm going to post this here too in case anyone here might have an idea of what they heck is going on!
I have a number of G9 characters as well as G8, 8.1 and 3. I have not had any issues with any of them until now. Ever since I re-installed DS recently, I've run into an issue with G9 and L.I.E. I'm not talking about add-ons but the LIE stuff that is packaged with the actual character. These options all worked fine for me prior to this reinstall. ALL the G8, 8.1 and 3 work perfectly. None of the solutions I found work for my G9 models. So what do I do here? Reinstall the characters? Reinstall DAZ yet again??? This is getting to be so frustrating. I had an image finally come together in my head and bam! No you cannot use that. I mean this is ALL my G9 characters that this is happening to not just one or a couple. I have no clue what the heck is going on here. See the screen shots below:

Have you selected layered image editor(LIE) from head surface? Can you share a screenshot of LIE

Wed, Apr 15I've never had to select anything but the character or the body part. And this is happening ONLY with G9. It does not happen with any previous Genesis versions. Plus it just started happening within the last 2 weeks with my recent install. It never, ever happened before that. Not one single time. I also just reinstalled Daz a few minutes ago, rebooted and same issue.
I stand corrected, it is happening with any character, unless there is a packaged geoshell included in the L.I.E. material Then it works. It's as if there is something not working as it should or possibly a script interfering? One only needs to look at my gallery to see that I've been using L.I.E. all along without any issue till now.

Case in point below. I did not have to do anything other than switch to surfaces tab and click on the character. This is the same character as in the screen shots above. So now I suddenly cannot get ANY L.I.E. to work unless it came with a geoshell to add in the package. So something simply is not connecting maybe?

This might be a silly question, but did you happen to have an older version of DAZ installed before? I think I've read several times that version 4.24 has a few quirks and can be a bit glitchy at times.
Unfortunately, I don't have any experience with LIE (only with shells) ... but I did a search for the following and found at least a little information
daz 4.24 " LIE " not working

The full white skin means it's missing compiled texture
A few things to try:
1. You can try to load the presets from Content Library , not smart content.
2. Remove the content inside the temp folder found here => C:\Users\[YOU]\AppData\Roaming\DAZ 3D\Studio4\temp\*
3. Reinstall the character's product (G9 + Boudica), not daz studio.
4. Open the script editor and paste this:
Scene.getPrimarySelection().getObject().getCurrentShape().update();
Run this code after applying LIE.
5. Switch to another version of Daz Studio, indeed there have been LIE issues with 4.24

Thu, Apr 16I'll try the temp thing. I did try using Content Library and that failed. I was using 4.24 for the last few months without any issues at all. This is just sudden, like since my last re-install. Another member here sent me a link to V4.22. I'm waiting on permission from that person to download it from Google cloud. I had the previous version stored on the drive that died, which I found very annoying.

Thu, Apr 16LOL!! Sadly it's the whole L.I.E. issue with any object, figure or prop that doesn't come with a packaged geoshell.

Thu, Apr 16It does appear that the larger issue is Daz's preoccupation with herding everyone into permanent subscription serfdom by indirectly punishing the FTP plebs. The enshittification is real
Ok, I used Revo and completely uninstalled DS again. Reinstalled and installed one character that has L.I.E. options. Same thing. Wherever the LIE options were placed, the character turned completely white. I'm done with this ludicrous issue. There is no logical reason this should be happening. I'm going to remove it form my drive once again and install an earlier version of DS.

Hey, I went through everything you described and this doesn't look like a normal usage mistake or something like "wrong surface selected." The fact that:
it suddenly started after reinstall
affects all LIE-based presets (not just one product)
works when a geoshell is included
turns the skin completely white
...points pretty strongly to a LIE texture generation failure, not a setup issue.
When L.I.E. works, DAZ actually builds a composited texture in the background (in the temp folder) and then feeds that into the shader. If that step fails, Iray has no valid map to read - so it defaults to white.
What I think is happening
This is likely one of these:
>> Most likely
Temp folder not writable / corrupted
- LIE cannot generate composite textures
- result = full white skin
>> Second likely
DAZ Studio 4.24 bug / broken reinstall state
- there have been LIE quirks reported in 4.24
- reinstall doesn't always reset configs cleanly
>> Less likely
LIE stacking / opacity conflict
- this would give visual glitches, not complete white
- also wouldn't suddenly break across all characters
Things that would really help diagnose it
Could you check a couple of things?
1. DAZ Log (most important)
Right after applying a LIE preset:
Help > Troubleshooting > View Log File
Look for anything like:
LIE errors
failed image creation
missing temp path / permission issues
2. Temp folder
Check this location:
C:\Users\[YOU]\AppData\Roaming\DAZ 3D\Studio4\temp
Try clearing it completely
Then apply a LIE preset again
See if new files get generated
If nothing shows up there after applying LIE - that's your problem.
3. LIE Editor screenshot
Just to confirm everything is loading correctly, a screenshot of the LIE layers (with the stack visible) would help-but based on your description, I don't think this is where the issue is.
One important clue you already found
It works when the product uses a geoshell
That's actually a big hint.
Geoshells don't rely on LIE's texture baking system-they layer directly in the shader-so they completely bypass the failing part of the pipeline.
What I'd try next (quick fixes)
Clear the temp folder (important)
Run DAZ as admin once (rule out permission issues)
Try loading/applying from Content Library instead of Smart Content
If nothing changes - try rolling back to 4.22 (more stable for LIE)
At this point, I don't think reinstalling characters will help-the issue looks global, not product-specific. It's more like something in the LIE pipeline isn't executing properly after your reinstall.
If you can share the log, that'll probably confirm it pretty quickly.

Thu, Apr 16Thank you but I tried everything, even rolling back to 4.22 I came to the conclusion that I was dealing with corrupted files. There are literally thousands of lines of code in the programs and the content, so any one or more of them could have been the issue. I spoke with a friend who is a developer and he said the best thing to do is just wipe it all and start from scratch. He suspects that even if I was able to fix a few errors or corrupted files, there are more and locating them might be nearly impossible because of how extensive the code distribution is. He thinks that the failed external drive which held all my content is what started the issue. That makes sense because it was causing all kinds of issues with my computer. Programs not opening, weird errors, stuff like that. The minute I disconnected that drive, everything was normal and working fine.
So I used Revo Pro and wiped everything, from registry files to content to any single Daz Studio reference on my drives. It's completely wiped. Like it was never installed anywhere. DIM too. If you ever need to wipe a program completely, Revo Pro is excellent.
Thank you for taking the time to reply in such a thoughtful manner with some decent suggestions. I have an unfinished Vue render that I'll start back up at some point and post that. After which, I'm going to take a break and work on stuff like my gardens.

Yeah, what you described actually makes sense, especially if that external drive was starting to fail. When a drive goes bad, it doesn't always just "stop working"-it can still respond but give slow or corrupted reads, and that can break things like L.I.E. which depend on loading and generating textures correctly.
That said, since you also mentioned system-wide issues before (apps not opening, weird behavior), it might be worth checking your main system drive too just to be safe. You can run a disk check like this:
Open Command Prompt as Administrator
Type: chkdsk C: /f /r
Restart your PC if it asks
This will scan for file system errors and bad sectors and try to fix them. Even if the external drive caused the original problem, sometimes instability can carry over or affect cached/temp data on your main drive.
You already did the right thing by wiping everything clean-that's honestly the fastest way out of deep corruption issues. This is just an extra safety step to make sure your system is fully stable before reinstalling everything again.
Out of curiosity, after the clean wipe, are you planning to reinstall on a completely healthy drive now, or still using the same setup?

Fri, Apr 17Oh, the first thing I did was check my main drives. I used this:
https://www.hwinfo.com/
Which gives you all kinds of details about every drive. Trust me, I've been working with computers for over 20+ years as a web developer and designer. So I'm anal about my system. My system went back to normal immediately after disconnecting the failed drive. That was about a month ago.
The new external drive I bought a couple of weeks ago actually gets firmware and software updates. It comes with its own separate software monitoring system. I got that one on sale for $250 off from the Samsung site.
https://www.samsung.com/us/memory-storage/portable-ssd/portable-ssd-t7-shield-usb-3-2-4tb-black-sku-mu-pe4t0s-am/
It's insanely fast and such a tiny little thing! It's made for the kind of use I need. I'm done buying cheaper drives from Amazon.
When I reinstalled DS the last time, I did not wipe everything. DS leaves bits and pieces of itself all over the place. This time I set Revo to hunt out everything and delete it. DIM is gone too. Completely. The new external was also wiped clean of DAZ files and checked. It's in excellent condition. My main drives are in great shape too.
I'll be back, at some point. My gardens are begging for cleanup and some of my perennials died from the pretty brutal temps we had this winter. So I'm just taking a break from DS for now.
