NGAA Catalina II PBY-5
95Just as I was about to begin the process of finalizing the long, long awaited and frustrating Catalina PBY Civilianized model, I caught wind that the aircraft is not only being updated and brought back into service but is now actually in production.
Catalina Aircraft Company out of Florida has begun manufacturing the PBY-5. It looks very similar to the WWII version with some significant outward changes. For one the old radial engines have been replaced with turbo prop engines. The read rudder assembly is slightly different. The company's website has renders for public viewing of the various versions of the aircraft. Cargo, civilian passenger and "special use" which is military variants.
Some of the changes I like, some I don't. For instance the rear elevator is different but the renders on the Catalina's website are not all in agreement about the final form. I decided to keep the old style because it just looks cooler in my opinion. Some of their versions retain the waist bubbles and some don't. Obviously, whatever they do I'm going to keep them because damn. Those things are absolutely boss. The nose is different, and the cockpit canopy is completely updated and I actually like the new look, so that is on the slate. I just finished the rudder and the engines insofar as modeling goes, and I like it:

At least in 3D world, one can take a few liberties here and there. Best of both variants may be the way to go.

Tue, May 26The most important thing is that the final design pleases the creator!
If, in addition, it pleases visitors and they buy it, that's the holy grail!
