AI and deceased actors
217I think the joke meme "too soon?" applies along side any legal or civil requirements. Personally, I think it would be wrong to do so too soon (perhaps not the case in the video). If there are rights holders or an estate then you have to worry about laws.. nonconsensual depiction and character attacks being obvious issues. Beyond that, I do wonder if AI will help retain genre of media (music in particular) long after public tastes have moved on. I would like to see experiments in that direction before declaring any definitive stance.

Mon, Jun 22You're right, the person who uploads these kinds of videos (there are several with actors who are still alive) isn't respecting the law. It's unlikely they obtained all the necessary permissions to make their videos public.

Sun, Jun 28the necessary permissions
So what permissions do you need to use the image of a dead person?
Is the own image protectable by someone else?
What about "lookalikes", who could easily be mistaken for a famous person? Are they allowed to sell (or just use) their own image?
Just trying to figure out the juristical base here...

Sun, Jun 28Try searching "postmortem right of publicity".. typically held by the estate of the deceased.
From an artist point of view, I think it's worth paying attention to the legal status of likeness rights (of the living and the dead) vs lookalikes vs caricatures vs first amendment rights.. and treading lightly.. using the likeness of a real person (dead or alive) can get you sued and the "TAKE IT DOWN Act" could cause all kinds of trouble if your (legitimately purchased) model is based on a real person.

Sun, Jun 28I thought the discussion would focus more on the "artistic" side of the video—which, incidentally, is quite poor in my opinion. I am surprised that the legal aspect regarding image rights was the one addressed.
Actually, a friend sent me this video, and I wasn't sure whether I liked this style of animation or not. I'm of two minds about it: seeing actors I liked again brought back memories, which is always nice. On the other hand, I'm not convinced that this is the best way to pay tribute to them.
