I would like to suggest a simple way to reduce spam in the forums and the image gallery comments.
What about requiring a minimum Karma score before users can create forum posts or comment on gallery images?
For example, new members could still read the forums and browse the gallery, but they would need to earn a small amount of Karma before being allowed to post. This would make it much harder for spambots to create accounts and immediately flood the community with spam, while having very little impact on genuine users.
I think this could significantly improve the quality of discussions and reduce the amount of moderation required.

It really sounds like a good idea to me.
Simple ideas are usually the ones that work best - they just feel right, especially since spam never adds anything constructive.

Depends on how you get karma points to start with. What do you do to earn karma?

Tue, Jul 14A spammer wants to register and immediately post his text containing a link quickly
Currently registering gives a Karma of 100, putting likes and adding favorites gives 20 points each time
By forcing him to click to get a minimum of additional points will discourage him
The other possibility is to force a delay of 24 hours for example

Wed, Jul 15That's also a detectable pattern.. create account, 5 immediate likes before an initial post within a short time span.. That wouldn't be hard to catch, I'd up it to 200 or 250 karma just to reduce false alarms.
Starting to wonder if this recent spam surge is someone lashing out over recent site changes...

That's a great idea, I had a LOT of spam messages in my forum posts lately and I think that would help, I don't know for sure but I think Steam works a little bit like that.

The legitimate new users get penalized by that strategy. They wont stay if they can't participate.

Thu, Jul 16A very good point. I understand there are a lot of spam messages. Got one myself, but they were removed rather quick.

Thu, Jul 16Maybe they could do like Steam: They need to at least do a purchase of any value or download a free item
Spam and scams are a constant battle. We see dozens, and sometimes hundreds of attempts in a day.
Our automated system does a very good job of identifying and stopping most of these attempts before they're ever visible to the community. However, we have seen a recent surge in this activity, and some spam has made it through, requiring manual admin intervention.
We're already working on improvements to the automated system to reduce these occurrences while minimizing disruption for legitimate users.
We appreciate the suggestions that have been shared. While some ideas may sound effective on the surface, our goal is to improve detection without creating unnecessary obstacles for legitimate members of the community.
In the meantime, if you do come across spam or scam content that slipped past our system, please click the report button. That immediately brings it to our attention so we can review and remove it as quickly as possible.
Thanks to everyone who takes the time to report these posts. Your help really does make a difference.
