3ds Max getting too slow, computer too old? (CLOSED)
106Hi all, I've recently updated to 3ds max indie version on my machine but it is getting very slow. I thought I jave a decent workstation, but now it is surely time to improve it. The fact is...I have no idea where to start (should I start changing the CPU or the graphic card first? Is it perhaps a problem due to a lack of memory?
I paste below my current IT setup and I hope that someone with more experience can support me please. Thanks!
This is my configuration:
CPU: AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2920X (12 cores, 24 threads)
Memory: DDR4 32gb
Video Adapter: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti (8gb Memory)
Motherboard: vendor ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. model PRIME X399-A
Liquid cooling system
2 ssd (1TB + 256 GB) & 1 HDD 1TB

Personally, first and foremost I would upgrade to an RTX graphics card which would significantly increase your vram, and spring for a memory upgrade as well as 4TB drives for both the OS and storage (I personally use the 4TB Seagate Firecuda drives). Then you would be right as rain.

Tue, Sep 19, 2023Hi tien_jian_fei thanks a lot for your reply, really appreciated!
Is there any specific RTX card that you would recommend for my PRIME X399-A motherboard?
Thanks again and have a great day!

Tue, Sep 19, 2023No problem mate. Personally I would go with the RTX A series over the RTX 30 or 40 series, but I'm not sure what your usage is so just do your research and go with what makes sense for your needs in that regard. Also, I'm pretty sure you can max that out at 128GB of RAM so you might want to grab like 8 of the Crucial 16GB DDR4 cards. Then your machine will bow to no one, lol.

Sun, Dec 10, 2023Hey mate, hope you are doing well.
Finally I bought and installed a GeForce RTX 4070 and expanded the memory to 65gb with higher frequency.
A render that used to take more than 26hours to complete with CPU only before now takes:
- 1.5hours with RTX engine only (no cpu)
- 2hours with CUDA (CPU + GPU)
So basically the improvement is huge! However, the images made in rxt or cuda mode, have much more "overexposure burn". Do I need to change any parameters when I switch from cpu only to rtx or cuda?
Thanks!
Mauro
