The scene is supposed to be an allusion to the phenomenon of sleep paralysis. While the consciousness is fully there, those affected feel paralyzed. Many people also experience vivid, often negatively rated dream activities during conscious paralysis. In about one third of patients sleep paralysis is accompanied by visual, tactile or acoustic hallucinations.
