The Pros and Cons of Dragonsitting (CLOSED)
73This render features Spark MacDubh (the main character in the novel Metallic Dreams) with a bunch of baby dragons. I gave each hatchling a distinct personality: one wild, one cheeky, one sleepy, one snuggly. My first incarnation of this render was set on Spark's tour bus, but I then changed the location to a 1950s-style American diner. I added lots of details so that the observer can't take in everything with a single glance... the nuances reveal themselves one by one. Most dragon art is dark and moody (nothing wrong with that), featuring big scary dragons (nothing wrong with that either!), but I was drawn in the opposite direction, to create a scene that conveys retro homeliness and cuteness overload, all complemented by a cosy diner furnished in bright pastel colours. Spark's expression took a while to get just right; it had to be a mixture of surprise and amusement. I like the idea that he is so distracted by what's happening to the coffee in his left hand, he's unaware of what's about to happen to the donut in his other hand.
I hope folk enjoy the render and get a kick out of it.
