"Trending" as default... why? (CLOSED)

As the title says. Most of the time, when one comes to the shop, they'll want to see what's new. What does a "trend" matter, in a shop where people buy what they need, can look it up with the search? I don't thin they'll go "Oh, this is fashinable so I'll buy it". We buy assets because we have a reason to. Seeing what's newest in the shop, on the other hand, is a good way to stay on top of things.
Is there a way to *always* get the new items first? When I manually change that on the shop page, in the next few days it will automatically revert to "trending". If there isn't a way, we really need one

There are several reasons...
Most users feel the opposite as you do.
They've told us (in words, and with their behavior) that they like the trending sort order as the default.
Most marketplaces are set up with a version of "trending" or "best match" sort order as the default - and not by newest.
I just checked CGTrader, TurboSquid, Sketchfab, ArtStation, Amazon, Walmart, etc... They're all that way.
Trending as the default sort order simply makes business sense.
The algorithm is driven by user behavior: sales, likes, add-to-collections, wishlist adds, conversion rate, and other metrics.
If the metrics indicate that people like a certain thing, it makes sense to show it to more people.
With that said, the system is set up to remember your last selection for as long as possible.
As far as I know, it should be at least through the current session or as long as your latest login is active.
I'm not one of the coders, but I think it's also tied to the cookie. Clearing cookies might reset your sort order.
In any case, sorting by "newest" really is one click away. I do apologize if the way it's set up is not convenient for you.
Lastly... The next big website update will be adding more sorting and filtering options throughout the marketplace.
Hopefully, the coders can include a way to make the users' preferences remain more consistent.
Thank you for your feedback. I have added a link to this thread to our internal notes regarding the site update.

Wed, May 29, 2024Sorry, I forgot the most important thing - to solve your immediate problem.
There is a way to "always get the new items first" - as you asked.
Bookmark one of these links for RenderHub:
https://www.renderhub.com/?optSort=1
https://www.renderhub.com/3d-models?optSort=1
https://www.renderhub.com/3d-figures-and-assets?optSort=1
The parameter in the URL will tell the system to sort by newest.
If you have a different page that is your preferred entry page, just add the ( ?optSort=1 ) to the end of your bookmarked URL.
If you need help with that, just give me a link to your preferred entry page, and I'll give you a working link.

Thanks a lot, Foxy. The link trick did the trick. More sorting filters will be good
too, but at least now the site will behave better for me

Mine's been set to "newest" for as long as I can remember, both for gallery and the marketplace. I would have thought that's how most people do it (we want the next big shiny!), but there have been times when I've flipped to "trending" and seen something I liked that I may have missed.

Thu, May 30, 2024I keep a close eye on the new stuff just in case, and I always bookmarks creators I like, checking their section routinely. This way, I rarely miss much, especially since I tend to stick to the daz section.

I am anti-algorithm, so I always prefer such things to be sorted the way I intend them to be sorted. "Popular" content often isn't the best content. Algorithms just feed the cycle.

Fri, May 31, 2024My feeling is that when a "trend" is rearing its head, it just means that some people do something and others emulate their choice or behavior. Flock mentality at work. In itself, it isn't a seal of quality, not the mark of a wise choice. Look at all those TikTok challenges... if one morning one comes up that's about "painting your own arse in blue" and a whole bunch of people go for it, encouraged by the algorithm, even though it's a "trend", they'll still look silly with their blue arses.
So I never follow trends and go with my own gut

Fri, May 31, 2024I wouldn't be making art at all if I had to follow trends. And if I did follow them, I'd be a lot more "popular". It isn't enough to provide something unique. Algorithms don't do "unique". Many of them have hidden "triggers" to either spike your views, or tank them into nothingness. I've been in purgatory for about ten years now thanks to algorithms.

Fri, May 31, 2024Lately I have had the likes of Paypal push new AI-driven algorithms on me as the newest cure-all to my "sales woes" (I've had an Ebay sellers account now for over 20 years). I'm not kidding when I say that I feel sick to my stomach right now. And Renderhup knows by now how I feel about algorithmic garbage. Doesn't matter what I say or how often I say it, it will only fall on deaf ears. So I have been speaking with my wallet. This site has a ton of 3D models but I'm not going to bother. if I need something and I feel confident enough, I'll make it myself. Otherwise I seek out what I need. I don't bother much with internal searches and filters. I just DDG it. If I don't find it I say "oh well".

Fri, May 31, 2024We want something, we can look it up. Trends are just an excuse to make people buy specific things regardless of their tastes and needs and that sort of defeats the purpose of looking for an item in the first place.
"Baaaaaaaa! I am following the trend!"
