Just an idea
How would people think of renderhub having an official discord? Unless there is already one and Im not aware of it.As a growing community on renderhub, I feel that this could help bridge the gap between communicating with eachother: vendors and buyers, as people just seem to keep to themselves only replying in art gallery comments and forums if they check it.
Either for the:- 3D section of renderhub
- Daz Section of renderhub- Or both into one discord to really branch out, as I feel the community leans more towards the Daz side and this goes for the gallery renders aswell.
Benefits I see:- Easier to communicate about Daz Issues, Problems and Bugs within the software- Issues with products, though this could be iffy if it either gets aggressive or out of hand- Just general chats between vendors and clients- Vendor only chat section, a place to talk about their products, questions, issues, etc- Could open up a bigger community for Collaborations, easier conversing between each vendor lessening the big step of messaging directly on renderhub to those not as confident- WIP, Updates of products, new content, just general vendor updates/fixes on their products- Another place to upload artwork- New updates or fixes from renderhub themselves- Could also be a good place to offer competition announcements, updates etc
I understand most is leaning towards vendors and daz, but if you have any suggestions or negatives feel free to add them!
Thanks

Quick edit:
I added spaces and gaps between texts but that definitely did not work, sorry if its a mess to read!

I've always wanted an ability to subscribe to certain threads, and if there's a forum search feature here, I don't see it. Discord has that stuff natively, and gives us the ability to do things like share screens/workflows in live calls, etc. I would be down for it!

Sun, Jun 09, 2024"...ability to subscribe to certain threads..."
That's a great suggestion, and you'll probably see that implemented soon.
We've already been testing out the feature in the blog section.
https://www.renderhub.com/blog/
There, you can subscribe to get updates on when new blog articles are posted.
I totally understand that in the forum, you'd want to turn notifications on and off for specific threads.
"...if there's a forum search feature here, I don't see it..."
We're going to have to do something better there. You can already do that.
The main search bar "follows a user" and becomes the search bar for whatever section they are in.
It also has a drop-down menu allowing the user to instantly search for other things.
Please let me know how we can make that more obvious. We need to get on that.

this is what I've been wondering about too, I feel like it'll be very beneficial for both vendors and buyers and perhaps the website itself. I think by expanding the community outside this website will possibly add more traffic. Discord is very easy to access, literally anywhere, any time especially when you're away from your PC. I do hope RenderHub consider this.

Please do share your ideas on how we can keep people on RenderHub, instead of sending them away.

Sun, Jun 09, 2024I’ve read through your replies and I do understand that you’re trying to keep people on RenderHub but I don’t think a RenderHub Discord server will push people away from RenderHub?… the point is, we’re thinking of this as something that would improve the engagement between RenderHub users. Overall, It’s the accessibility that I personally would like to have (sending images/files without having to upload to gdrive, receiving a live notifications without having to be on browser or checking my emails, getting the latest updates about RenderHub, etc). Perhaps a group chat would also be interesting?
I’m also looking at how other sites have their own Discord servers and it works for them to keep their community alive but if it does not work with RenderHub then I understand. The changes to My Hub would be interesting though, I think that would be a really great and beneficial feature especially for the vendors here.

Sun, Jun 09, 2024another note, when it comes to a notification through email, I always receive it at least an hour/more late and I don’t know if it’s just me or not
I agree with you all. Having a discord can indeed work for traffic. It would be good and I hope they consider it. I already have a couple of ideas for it, but we will have to wait and see.

Sun, Jun 09, 2024Yes, it would indeed "work for traffic" - for Discord.
As you can tell by my other replies, I don't want to dismiss your ideas.
We just need to focus on what it will take to keep people on RenderHub, instead of sending them away.
I chat with the owner nearly every day, and we're very focused on improving community engagement.
Let's see if we can make that happen here.

From the RenderHub business standpoint, this makes absolutely no sense.
If I brought this idea to the owner right now, this might be the last post you ever read from me.
OK - It wouldn't be *that* bad. I've known the owner long enough that he'd probably just think my brain was on vacation.
Although this might be a fantastic idea for some businesses, why is this a bad idea for RenderHub?
Per Discord on their website:
Discord is the home base where you and your fans come together and connect.
Creators use Discord as a centralized hub to connect organically with their fans.
On the RenderHub "About Us" page:
RenderHub is your go-to platform for all things 3D. It's a community that brings together 3D artists, enthusiasts, and professionals worldwide.
It is a social hub for 3D, where you can share your creations, collaborate with others, and build your network.
Discord = Hub / Render*HUB* - See the problem there?
It would make no sense for RenderHub to encourage community members to go hang out in another community.
-----
So what should we do?
Many of you might already know that I like to solve problems, not dismiss them.
And I love feedback from the community, because the owner is willing to act on it.
Some of you may know that many of the features that exist now are a result of community feedback.
Let's take this opportunity to find out what's missing or what can be improved here at RenderHub.
What does Discord have that you'd like to see at RenderHub?
I'll see if we can make that happen. I've already started taking notes.
To keep the discussion more organized, I'll respond to your specific concerns below.

Tue, Jun 11, 2024While I totally understand the logic here, the biggest problem is that a lot has changed over the years, and less and less people use forums or live chats inside of websites they go to, more and more people spend their time in Facebook groups, Discord servers or Twitter/X group chats.
Going to the owner with "why don't we open an official Discord server" would not be your last message (I get you were joking of course) but a better way to phrase it would be "it's 2024 and the bulk of our people are in numerous Discord servers, why don't we make one as well as there has been desire expressed by members."
I know the goal of a site is to keep ppl on the site, but that just doesn't fly anymore, NOW much more then in the past you MUST be where your audience is at, the reason people have moved away from individual website forums and site chats is that takes 1 tab for each site, where as Discord has ALL the servers you are in right on one simple screen, allowing ppl to hop from one to the other without switching browser tabs, launching a browser, refreshing a page etc etc.
Ignoring stuff like that only makes people go off an join or start unofficial servers where you don't have any control of, so at the very least to protect the brand and name I'd create a server so it's off the market so to speak and there if you need it.
As always when I type out stuff like this I always end with "social media manager / community manager for 20 years, 12 years as admin of a similar site" (This type of stuff is alllll over my wheelhouse lol

@IAmAFox -
"...Just general chats between vendors and clients..."
That's what the message center and this forum are for. What should we do better?
Other users have asked to be able to attach/insert images into message center conversations.
I've been trying to push for that, and the owner is open to it if more users say they want it.
Live chat / instant messaging with a notification alert... That's something else that has been discussed.
Would these things help make the RenderHub message center be the go-to place for these "general chats"?
Any other ideas - please share them.
"...Vendor only chat section..."
We already have a private section of the forum that only vendors have access to.
https://www.renderhub.com/forum/vendors-corner
"...easier conversing between each vendor lessening the big step of messaging directly on renderhub to those not as confident..."
I'm not sure I understand this one. Is it scary or difficult to start a conversation with someone here?
What can we do to make this easier?
"...Updates of products, new content, just general vendor updates/fixes on their product..."
Now THIS you may happy to hear... We've already been discussing this.
We would like to change how "My Hub" works - so it is actually "Your Hub".
It would become your "personal blog" of sorts - a home page where users can post whatever they want.
(And then the stuff that's currently on "My Hub" would be "My Feed"...)
Would you like something like that?

Sun, Jun 09, 2024"personal blog" : a home page where users can post whatever they want.
Personally I am not interested in this function. I find that this duplicates the forums which have the advantage of having a thematic classification. If this new function is created, I would like it to be deactivatable (maybe I don't really like other people writing on my personal pages)

Sun, Jun 09, 2024Has anyone discussed using Mumble instead of Discord?
Mumble is my go-to VoIP software. It's free and open source, and RenderHub can brand it as they see fit and self host it so it and everything about it is under RenderHub's direct control and oversight.
Mumble has been around much longer than Discord, and would more than likely be what we'd all be using today if it didn't take having your own servers to run Mumble, but RenderHub has those.
Mumble also doesn't have a cap on the number of users that can use it like Team Speak does (unless you pay for Team Speak, anyway.)
Just a suggestion if it's not already been looked into...

Tue, Jun 11, 2024This whole thread is about adding a Discord server, which is voice chat software.
Admins have basically said they're not interested in a Discord server and I understand the rationale. This website is a hub, the point of a hub is to keep people at the hub. By using Discord they would be sending their users to a third party. Also using third parties for anything puts the third party in control of whatever data personal or otherwise they're gleaning out of your browser.
This was why I suggested Mumble as it's basically the opposite of Discord in how it operates. It can run off of RenderHub's already existing infrastructure, so the site operators are not sending anyone to a third party.
Mumble also supports text chat, posting photos, posting urls, moderator support, multiple channels (or rooms), user registration that can even be integrated into RenderHub's existing user database (although this would admittedly take some work from the site's coders, but it's also not a requirement as Mumble by default uses it's own way of storing user registrations which would be owned and controlled by RenderHub given that the database would literally be on their servers).
One of the bigger differences between Discord and Mumble is, well unless something major has changed in the past handful of years, there is no web client. Discord will pretty much always win over Mumble and TeamSpeak2 because people don't need to download a client to access it, they just go to Discord's website. Discord has clients for mobile operating systems though. Mumble also has free clients for mobile operating systems (iOS, Android).
Anyway, just for disclosure, personally I am not interested in Discord or Mumble (I used to use Mumble years ago). I was only suggesting Mumble since it is a viable alternative to Discord if an entity such as RenderHub wants to keep control of their data.

Wed, Jun 12, 2024I've used Mumble for over a decade. It's voice chat software. Just an open source version of Vent and Teamspeak. I used to take part in Spatry's Cup of Linux community and Mumble server, so I know what it is and how it works.

Sat, Jun 15, 2024Correct, and since this entire thread was about adding a voice chat for Renderhub, it seemed appropriate to suggest it. Have a nice weekend.
I don't know about discord, there are a lot of people on there that wander in and out of chat rooms just to cause chaos with groups they do not like. Sure, I guess you can boot them out, but especially considering the hostility with AI "artists", I cannot see myself signing on to discord. I'd rather come here and peruse the forums, look at products and the gallery.

I personal have a deep seated and visceral HATRED of Discord servers.
So ..No!!!
That said. (and no offense intended) but of all of the forums I visit daily:
Reallusion.com
Daz3d.com
Blender Artists.org
this site (Renderhub) seems to be using the most primitive bare bones forum software
The ability to edit your own post to correct spelling.
or quote someone else is sort of the bare minimum in mid 2024.
I hope some new forum software is being considered.

Mon, Jun 10, 2024I agree, in general we just need the whole features to be more updated and well thought out
A personal blog would be interesting but it would be linked ONLY to the seller profile so as not to sink and flood the forums.
A personal blog like on ArtStation, with our projects for the coming year, small votes for future projects but without a comment thread, only a showcase on the content.
This would strengthen the customer/seller link.
Concerning a Discord renderHub, no interest as Foxy said, it would be shooting yourself in the foot, everything would happen in a submarine, not to mention the commissions under the table etc.
In addition Discord is a purge to use, it is hideous, a real dump.
A few suggestions for my part, private messages with image integration would be interesting and useful.
Think about being able to update the products for download with a description of the changelog.

Like you, I only went through it very quickly

Bad things happen in Discord servers. It's a cheap, lazy way to try to implement something we already have here. Discord servers are a nightmare to moderate, and they're loaded with bots. Leave Discord to what it was designed for; an "enhanced" version of Ventrillo/Teamspeak/Mumble. Discord is basically a hyped-up IRC with voice and video. Every time a developer somewhere suggests I join their Discord server I run the other way.
I have a Discord server of my own, it was suggested by a bunch of my Twitch followers back in the day. That's really what it's for; gamers and game streamers. I have a few fans I talk to there but those are very special use-cases.

I have to admit: I first had to google what this ominous Discord is supposed to be ...
I really like to help users of my projects when it comes to questions or (installation) problems - via PM / Forum.
But to voluntarily put myself (or let myself be put) into such a blah blah blah hamster wheel?
No way!
Instead of the drivel that takes place there, I prefer to use my time for more important things - such as new projects
Just my two cents ...
