While my next wallpaper is ripping along, I was wondering where you get the inspiration for your projects, promos or pictures.
I think it will be similar for many of you as it is for me (so I won't describe what triggers me (yet)) ... but believing doesn't mean knowing - and maybe one or the other will have a surprising source of inspiration
There are lots of great 3D artists here on Renderhub - many with their very own style and expression. It would be great if you could give us a little insight here.

It is actually a good idea to discuss this topic which can boost us to do new things.
For clothes especially the shapes I find them in the street by looking at how the people I meet or that I follow are dressed.
For the morphs of the clothes, it is especially to make them correspond to the gestures of everyday life.

When I got more into clothes I searched on Etsy a lot (I live in an area where not very inspiring clothes are worn). There are some very progressive fashion designer hobbyists on etsy with some great ideas.

the forum 3D ITEMS WANTED is also a source of inspiration, allows to see the interests of buyers.
The gallery is also a source of inspiration but unfortunately too few buyers put their works there which would allow us to have an idea of their pictorial universe

I'm not that much into creating, but sometimes it's a movie where I see beautiful dresses (like the skater outfit I made) that inspires me.
Or something I would wear myself, like stuff from the 70th
For pictures it's music, my biggest inspiration for so many things. Seldom books, except for landscape render. And of course nature itself, having one of the most wonderful natures in front of my nose

Sun, Oct 06, 2024You're so right, music as art in itself can create pictures in our minds and these pictures again can have the potential for someone to write a song about it

I Have Found That Contests Themes That are done on some Art // Creative Sites Help me to Explore New Ideas From Different Points of View.
Example: A Witch goes Shopping For a New Familiar in a Steampunk Shop.
Just Reading that what goes through Your Mind?
Anyway Hope that Helps You.

Mon, Oct 07, 2024Yep - competitions / challenges can fire the imagination ... even if you don't take part
This has happened to me several times: I should have been working on one (or more) projects ... but then something interesting came up that I wanted to know - just for myself - what I would produce.

Mon, Oct 07, 2024BTW - your mention of contests immediately sparked another promotional/fun idea for me. Inspiration everywhere

For me it's 3D asset stores and products. I keep a list of what I buy and have a rule to render every at least once. It's an exercise to see how much I can put together in one image and remove from my list. I keep notes for future projects; but you know how that goes...

Anything and everything outside of certain types of content. Scenes I envisioned from scifi/fantasy paperbacks I read as a kid that thankfully were never ruined by the movie industry. Adlib scenes from movies, tv and anime that thankfully I never read the books that they might have been inspired by. Real world scenes that may have caught my interest and now that I'm getting older, I find myself rendering more reminiscent moments from my earlier days.

Personally I start by preparing the character, then I develop a concept that can make the character perform at its best. I usually develop everything at the moment, rarely do I take inspiration.

Thank you for this great aspect

There are so many variables involved. It depends on what I'm doing, what I have been doing, how my day or week or month is going, and so much more. I will try to answer. But keep in mind that this isn't a simple answer.
Inspiration can come at me from anywhere, at any time. I've written story treatments that started as literal dreams or nightmares I have had. There are times when I see or speak a certain word, whatever it may be, and that can and has led to a movie quote, which in turn can remind me of something I remember from 40+ years ago, which triggers something in media that I adored, and I build from there. I remember a time when I was at work, and I walked by an orange ladder. Just thought about the color, and from that I rendered an image of a racegirl who's outfit was orange.
Another time I was ruminating on wordplay featuring fictional characters. From that I created a character named Mara Loft. Then there's the seed that started the SexyCute Studios. It started with me ruminating on an aversion to reality tv shows. I came up with this idea of people signing up for this reality tv game show where they would be kidnapped from their homes and put in a dungeon, to see if they could survive a certain number of days as food for a vampire. The show was started and featured a rich vampire queen, who turned out to be my Felicia. At that time, Trump was a hot ticket with his Apprentice show, so crazy as it sounds, he was the seed that grew into Felicia, Brandi, Luna, and their backstories. And the eventual turn from running a tv game show/reality show, to retiring it and opening up a modeling studio.
Here's my favorite example. I was watching clips of Superman II. I've always liked Zod as a villain in that movie. So there's that famous scene where he and his two minions are on trial. I've always been intrigued with how the moviemakers got that weird forcefield/lock thing to work practically. You know, the two hoops spinning around each prisoner? That simple design was the inspiration for my Galaxy earrings. For whatever reason, my mind shifted from that movie clip, to incorporating that design in a pair of earrings. That's how my mind works. I can be extremely creative, and that trait is a big reason why I have been fixing industrial-grade machinery for a quarter century.
My "long-windedness" is a part of who and why I am. While I can be blunt when needed, when I am asked an open-ended question, I could write a thesis on the subject. But what it boils down to is...... It could be a picture I see on Instagram, or a literal nightmare. Could be a single word that I or someone else says in conversation. Could be a song I haven't heard in 30 years. Inspiration for me can literally come from anywhere. And sometimes it can come from a problem I need to solve. It's like when I made the portable curtained room divider. I thought it looked cool when one was being used in videos of a clothing store's Instagram account. So I just had to make one. The problem with such a creative mind is that there's so much to do, so much to want to do. Some people would kill for this cure to "art block" but it can be quite the hinderance as I can become disinterested in the "big picture".

Inspiration for me comes from different places. Sometimes it's just a single word I hear. Often it's walking outside, the forest most definitely, scenic vistas, and even dreams I've had. Music can play into it or even a random thought of what if. Beauty in pretty much every form inspires me. But most of my inspiration comes from the woods and the many long years of role-playing on AOL at the height of their chat rooms. The glory days, lol, as those of us who remember call it.

It can come from anywhere, really. Other times I might just pick an asset and develop something around it - this can especially be the case following a new buy.

OK, it's a bit crazy to reply to your own thread, but this may be a new aspect for others:
For me, one of the most powerful and lasting triggers in the development of family-friendly projects is a big NOPE
Clothes:
I don't like the computer-induced 100% symmetry that you see far too often. I don't like the neatness of the clothes even in the wildest turmoil. And when rocker outfits or punk clothes look like they've just come off the Milan catwalk, I think there's something wrong with them.
Poses:
I don't like the rigid, meaningless poses that you unfortunately see far too often (especially on Rendo) - that's what I call B3: Basic, Bad and Boring. Sometimes I am / was a little over-triggered (for example my contorted poses) ... but some great renderings from Masterstroke inspired me to try normal (but still sophisticated) poses.
Happy rendering and happy getting inspired / triggered

Everyone finds it normal that an amateur photographer goes to professional photo exhibitions to improve, on framing, on shooting angles, the choice of a lens...
In your answer you give your point of view on the overly symmetrical clothes made by some designers who create half of a garment and obtain the other half by copy-paste-adapted
If I understand correctly, a garment that fits perfectly to Genesis' skin without any folds has little chance of entering your library because it has nothing to do with the behavior of clothes in real life.
Yet this is what a clothing designer tends to do...
Reading this kind of thing in a forum does a lot of good

Tight-fitting clothing? I have nothing against that ... I even have a few pieces in my program
But what about clothes that don't actually fit tightly (only on DAZ) - and in real life sometimes slip out of place and develop their own non-symmetry when worn? I know too well how difficult this is to develop (especially for G9) ... but a little bit of disorder can sometimes look more interesting than monotonous symmetry (my opinion).

Fri, Oct 11, 2024Ha! Be more suprising if you didn't add what inspires you!
In terms of content, whatever floats your boat, otherwise if you're doing it for other reasons, you'll probably lose interest altogether.
I'm all about dynamic clothing these days, and even more so when the vendor adds clothing morphs like off the shoulder, undressing, on the floor, shorten, lengthen, etc, etc..... Those vendors will have my support until I'm even older and grayer!
As far as posing, I suck at it! My main goto is Zeddicuss over at Daz simply because of his mix and match packages and then I can fine tune from there. More importantly, its the expression and where the eyes are looking that makes or breaks a render. Nothing worse than pain stakingly setting up a snene, waiting 5 hours or so for it to finish only to realize you forgot to add an expression or the eyes are looking the opposite direction of where they should be.

Yeah - dynamic clothing with morphs is one (if not the only) way to add some movement and messines. However, many users have their problems with this - especially the ! everything has to be perfect with one click! section. (Exclamation marks replace the quotation marks, which are unfortunately filtered out here).
And you're damn right: Zeddicuss is great (if a bit wooden without post-processing ... but that's what we're both doing

Picking - or finding - the right expression can be tough to do. Some facial structures allow for certain expressions better than others. Expressions can be easy to overdo (there's an expression for the camera, and then there's an expressive reaction). In general noticing you screwed something up or didn't notice an error after all that (lengthy setup and lengthy render) is irritating. Happened to me a number of times over the years.

Sun, Oct 13, 2024One of the key-mistakes when creating poses is the way collars are posed.
Collars need gravity. Most figures in their default T or A pose have their collars up.
This is okay for a T pose, but with arm down, the shoulders go down too.
So for my character Roxy, I connected the collars to her shoulders.
The shoulders are the controllers for the collars.
E.g.: right Collar bend -5
at
right shoulder bend -30

Sun, Oct 13, 2024Hey - thanks for the tip on the collar (clavicle?)! Although I try to check my poses from every angle to see if they look realistic or “wooden I might have to check the collarbone thing too ...
And as I wrote in a picture comment (as PasahRi): I love your model Roxy. Very natural and not as starved as the usual models. And even in your more candid pictures she maintains sensuality and intimacy. Really great!

For me it's mostly my years as a Dungeons & Dragons player. I started in 1981 and it ended around 1998.
Around the time that last group fell apart, I had been through so much, that I became a semi-recluse. I just stopped
bothering with people.
So I make D&D inspired fantasy images mostly. Since I don't play anymore (with who? My dog?) at least I can make
the pictures.

Sun, Oct 13, 2024I can relate. First WoW pulled away players, then computer (and console and card) games got more immersive (plots, mechanics & graphics).. eventually the RPG players just vanished or were too isolated or too busy to play. Those were the days though. At least we get to keep the memories!
I have books and manuals going back to the 70s. I still have literally hundreds of figurines. I have the old LCD hand held video game
from 1982, and the original box. It still works. Lots and lots of dice including a custom made set made out of beautiful green malachite,
I also have some of the old Gamma World material. Gamma World was fun but it seems not many players got into it.
I was the only kid in my school to beat the Dragon's Lair arcade game.

Mon, Oct 14, 2024I never made the transition out of 2nd edition (A)D&D. Did Vampire for a while; but by then mechanics started mattering more than the banter and games suffered. But great for inspiration, your elves look great btw!

Tue, Oct 15, 2024Another Thing is Do not try to do it all at once Take a break do something else let your mind rest. The burnout from constantly trying to be Creative is the fast Way to stop being Creative. I Like to have multiple Projects Going to Keep me from getting into a Creative rut But Sometimes it is also good to just get away from "Work". Also Find it Interesting that if what you are working on Gets lost Via Power loss and you have to Recreate what you did not Save before the power went out. Reminder from My Programing teacher if you can redo it in 5 minutes it was better to save! o.o Oh Kwekx Thanks I Think I made those elves back when The Hobbit movie was going Strong.
There's so many answers to your question .
1, feedback, even if negative. When I was a kid no one wanted to look at my pictures until one day a neighbor took the time to look at a drawing of a tree. She seemed genuinely excited about the detail and style. That was all it took for me to start drawing all the time.
2, When I was 16 (a long time ago) I was training to be a diesel mechanic. Stripping down hgv gearboxes or complex injector systems was incredibly inspiring. All the tiny and weird shapes seemed to look like sci fi spaceships or weird technology. In a way it was a curse until years later when I went back to college to make models.
In the 90s I made many real world models for TV adverts and films. Making a miniature city and blowing it up with with black powder was a lot of fun. Friends used to buy me plastic airfix kits for birthdays. All kits got dumped into one big box and remixed mashed together with anything with an interesting shape.
All that still inspires me today. Only now I can do it all on a pc. I still like to put a bunch of random shapes into a folder and kitbash something new. Short answer would be shapes inspire me, my brain responds to shapes and runs off on it's own making things. I have to catch up when I get on the computer.
3, Finally music, It's so easy to get unmotivated. Having music on in the background while I work can be so much more productive. Music and shapes go so well together

Wed, Oct 16, 2024Thank you very much
and thank you also for your music thread: interesting, cool and informative (if you want to get to know the musical taste or musical inspiration of the 3D artists and CC's here):

was honestly looking for a topic like this on here (as I almost made one lmao:
1. music and the grotesquely vivid imaginations and vibes that clouds my mind. my musical inspirations can be all over the place, which I believe that's perfectly fine.
2. diagnosed with ASPD and schizophrenia so I make art (and music) to cope with these issues.
3. my love for unsettling and gritty imagery based on late 90s/00s media (even though I was born in 2001, which is a very jam-packed year btw lmao)
4. the constant curiosity to experiment which has plagued my works since I started making 3d art in a game called Garry's Mod as a pre-teen. (those works are significantly more abstract and out there than my Daz renders and I would love to push those boundaries with Daz.)

Have a great and inspiring day

I look at a lot of movies and play video games as well. So my inspiration has been from mostly that, as well as fashion magazines and pinup/burlesque culture.

Thu, Jun 19You're very welcome! They help me a lot, especially when its just a static pose.
Ooooooo...ya had to ask didn't ya!
I'm a HUGE fashionista and am particularly fond of vintage wedding dresses. That period from the late 70's to the late 90's saw the most ridiculously ornate and over-the-top bridal dresses. They where outrageous, and hot and heavy and crazy expensive but soooo achingly gorgeous. I collect the old bridal magazines and scan the ads. These are shared on my Tumblr blog and I have (so far) about 54,000 scans.

When I'm playing in the Poserverse (actually the Studioverse) I use the old Vicky Three and Four gowns then kit bash items that have a somewhat bridal/wedding flair. I use TruForm's scenes a lot since they seem to fit a wedding scenario.
I've always dreamed of making some of these dresses for Studio but other hobbies keep getting in the way (ask me about remodelling old houses...go ahead, I dare ya
) Recently however, I've teamed up with an established content artist to provide her with high resolution scans of bridal embroidery, and sorta-3D meshes made via photogrammetry of several older gowns that I own. We're also doing a line of lingerie produced from scans and photos of my extensive collection of lingerie and bridal shoes. This has been great fun (so far) and I've learned a lot. My background in graphics, photography and related imagery helps a lot here. We're not confident that this stuff will sell very well, but it will definitely fill a niche between the fantasy and SciFi stuff.
