Fan Art

Having now just noticed the recent add-on to the site (nice one, BTW), how exactly is this going to be categorized? As someone who likes to take IP characters in an off-use manner (outside their IP's setting, if applicable), I am curious to know if that would end up being considered fanart. I know for tags I would label it as such just to be on the safe(r) side of things, though I also wouldn't exactly categorize it as such - and I don't tag the IP if the character(s) (or other assets) are used off-use.
Yep, I like to spend time in that borderline area, too. LOL

Thank you for bringing the new Fan Art gallery to my attention. I'll have to exam this further...
Looks like IP characters are getting swept into Fan Art (Goldilocks! Seriously!) regardless of setting or manner or use.. It will be interesting to see how sophisticated this gets, in-game locations and objects like K.I.T.T. etc for example.
IMO it's a smart addition.

Fri, Jan 31I like it in concept and agree it's a good idea. You could maybe give the mature material the same treatment, but I'm not 100% sold on overly categorizing the gallery.
I like the Fan Art categorization feature. But I'm having trouble understanding the bounds of the category.
I added many of my own pictures to the category, but they were all removed.
My best guess is the pictures were judged not to be "pure" enough, as the pictures most frequently mixed characters from differing fiction spaces, or placed the character in a setting obviously not from their corresponding fiction space.
If this is the reason my pictures were removed, I must complain that one of my pictures did not have these violations, and was squarely within the bound of fiction space purity. it is this one here: https://www.renderhub.com/gallery/50064/strakers-run
This one is straight out of the TV series called "UFO". It should be put back into the Fan Art category.
But this brings up another issue. That picture likely got removed because the moderators are unfamiliar with such old TV shows from Britain. In such cases of unfamiliararity, will we be expected to prove that our submission is faithful to the fiction space, and, if so, how?

Fri, Jan 31I too went through all of mine and tried to check the appropriate boxes for them and wound up with the same result. I don't really feel like going through all of them again, so I'll just leave things as they are for the time being.
When I was going through those, some felt a bit borderline and could have gone either way, but some clearly fall into the fanart category.

Sat, Feb 01Interesting. I viewed the category as one you are compelled into, I also view the category as a sacrificial bridge or a holding area for when lawsuits and take-down notices come. Thinking about it, the fan art label may give some sort of "fair use" protection.
Not sure why self identification isn't accepted though, maybe it's machine verified or maybe the goal for the gallery is a "modern" aesthetic.. don't know.

Sat, Feb 01I thought the MP was far more likely to get a tap on the shoulder from those parties. I myself throw the fanart tag on things featuring IP assets just to be on the safe side, even if I wouldn't necessarily categorize it as such.
I don't know if it's a mod or a bot going through and declaring what's what.

Sun, Feb 02I don't know how the check mark box works, but I'm assuming it flags it for review by a human moderator. I've noticed giving reviews tends to have a lag, sometimes in range of hours and again, I'm assuming there's a human, very reasonably, screening all this stuff based on that delay being so variable.

Sun, Feb 02Next we'll find out they've never heard of Blake's 7, Space 1999 or Red Dwarf. 8o
It seems like a good idea, it'll be interesting to see how it plays out.
