In Dragon Age 2, the main character has twin siblings, Carver and Bethany Hawke. One of them dies in the prologue depending on what class you pick for your Hawke.

During the events of the game, the surviving sibling may, depending on your choices, die, become a gray warden or...
Carver becomes a Templar
Bethany gets captured by Templars and sent to the Circle (think mage jail for existing as a mage)

In this what if scenario: Hawke, your main character was the one to die. This would be the events that would have happened, as they were making mages tranquil in droves later in the game. Carver holding his sister down as she gets the brand.

Tranquility is a rite that strips a mage of their connection to magic (the Fade), as well as their emotions and literal dreams, making them complacent beings of pure logic who do what they are told. Basically a magical lobotomy.
