A test of including a 3D character inside a background photo. I placed some catchers (floor and wall) to get some shadows and enhanced the contrast of the background photo to balance the character's colors. The big advantage is that we have a cheap and light realistic background and a fast render. The big disadvantage is that we can't change the camera direction and we must fake the shadows...

Yeah that's kinda the thing I don't really like about using pasted backdrop as a background - I feel like I have to fake too much to get it right. Distant objects I can kinda get away with it if I do something like shoot from the waist up. It's also something I try to be careful with regarding skydomes and how the scene transitions with it. Sometimes you can easily tell when a background is fake to the rendered image.
The less I have to fake, the better. But that's just me.
Another thing about such backgrounds is that your characters can't really interact with the scene all that well either.
Nice image, nice backdrop, nice character, though!

Tue, Sep 12, 2023You're right. The use of a background picture has a lot of constraints. A bit like HDRI images to also create a full environment but even without being able to move the camera or rotating the lighting. But it's still interesting to test that kind of faking. I have other works in progress with that technique...
