The last stand
3D Render by PizzaundbierThe German attack had hit the Soviet defenders nearly off guard. Tank after tank was knocked out, man after man fell under the German hail of bullets. Natalya headed from wounded to wounded, taking care of them as good as possible in this inferno. Although the Red Army nurse worked with a remarkable speed and knowledge her help came too late for most of her comrades. She didn't even stop when a shot hit her ankle. Quickly she removed her boot and bandaged up her own foot before she continued to care for others.
On one of the city's bridges - less than 50 metres away from the advancing German spearhead - she tried to rescue a wounded officer, but the man died in her arms. Soon, she realised that now she was the last defender between the fascist troops and the bank behind her. There was no chance to escape. Being Jewish and a convinced Communist, surrender was no option for Natalya, either. Without hesitation she grabbed the officer's submachine gun and opened fire on the quickly advancing enemies.

Dear WurstundLager,
Shpagin 41 ... assume its Stalingradsk. Good render and background ... with the reality being Natalya would shortly be cut down, like tens of thousands of others (both sides), then the Germans would hold the ground until night. Come night the Russian defenders would come out of the sewers to recapture the area ... then next morning it would start over.
Folks around the world who attend memorials, memorial battle and victory (or defeat) days - do so to remember, not celebrate. So many lives lost - good friends and family; while one of the saddest things about such days/memorials ... is the fact many survivors live with the 'guilt' of surviving - feeling they should have fallen with those who died.
War - anywhere and any time, is not a good place to be (ever). Memorials - anywhere and any time, are not celebrations for the living (ever) - rather the duty of those who survive to honour the lives of those who did not.
Sacrifice? Politicians use that word. Vet's usually say (or think) "waste".
Thank you for sharing - and reminding us,
Rick

Dear Rick,
Thanks a lot for your comment!
I totally agree with you. War is the ultimate loss of morals, common sense and dignity. A mass slaughter without honour and humanity.
Natalya won't survive the very next moments, like all her comrades and a large amount of German soldiers before. Every single one with hopes and dreams that died with them.
I made a similar statement already here: The last picture 3D Rendering | RenderHub Gallery
Glad to see someone getting the meaning behind my picture.
Best wishes from Germany
