The End to Come - Page 11
3D Render by emarukkOlivia swallowed hard when the stranger finally released his grip on her. She stepped hesitantly into the confines of the airlock. A chill creeping down her spine as if Olivia was a creature driven to the trap. Olivia felt unsure, and her legs shook even though she was acutely aware of what awaited her inside the airlock. The two space suits hanging by the metallic wall loomed large, their designs accommodating men with broad shoulders and long limbs. Her fingers hovered uncertainly over the textured fiber surface, her mind a whirlwind of thoughts and fears. Beyond the thick glass window, the shuttle floated in the endless abyss of space, its hull barely catching the faint gleam of light from the dying station. There were countless intricate details that could unravel and betray her efforts. Olivia's fear was so overwhelming that it consumed her thoughts entirely, causing her to momentarily lose awareness of her precarious situation. The cacophony of the failing station around her faded into a distant, muted hum as if her ears were submerged underwater, leaving her in a bubble of anxious silence.
Suddenly, without any warning, the drone shot forward, slicing through the stillness with a sharp mechanical whine. It zipped past Olivia, making her shake awake from the prison of her fears. Drone darted back to the corridor like a startled insect fleeing an impending threat. Olivia watched in wide-eyed astonishment, her mouth agape, as the peculiar stranger shouted after the swiftly retreating drone.
"Stay here, damn it!" he commanded, though his words fell on deaf circuits. The sleek device paid no heed to the directive, its metallic form a blur as it darted back along the path they had traversed just moments before. It was like the drone possessed its own secret agenda, a mechanical entity driven by an unseen purpose.
Olivia's heart raced wild as she turned to gaze at a stranger. His arms were dramatically flung wide as he continued hurling curses at the mechanical assistant. Though brief and intense, his outburst was underscored by a voice that remained remarkably steady and composed despite being distorted by the helmet. The voice was almost unnaturally composed and calm despite fierce words.
"I will assist the girl in suiting up," he murmured calmly, his voice slightly distorted by the helmet's filter. "And once that's done, I will close this door, regardless of where you are at that moment."
His words made Olivia pause, a momentary stillness overtaking her as the stranger spoke. The way he said it was peculiar, referring to not her, but the girl, as though he was addressing someone else entirely. It was like he was conversing with an unseen presence, listening and understanding in an unnerving way. The words lingered in the air, their chill and firmness almost tangible as Olivia mulled them over in her mind. Firstly, she thought there was communication to ship. Then, a startling realization dawned on her: the stranger was arguing with a drone. This was clearly no ordinary studio drone; everything about it seemed different, almost as if it possessed consciousness. "Could a drone be jealous?" Olivia mused, her thoughts swirling as she felt the stranger's eyes fixed intently on her, a commanding gaze concealed beneath the sophisticated sensor array of his helmet.

This scene is dripping with tension and intrigue! The way Olivia's fear is described makes it almost palpable, like the air itself is thick with uncertainty. The detail about the drone having its own secret agenda is such a cool touchalmost makes it feel like an unpredictable character rather than just a machine. And the stranger? The way he refers to "the girl" rather than Olivia directly gives off some serious eerie vibes, like he's seeing something (or someone) more than what meets the eye.
Also... a jealous drone? That concept alone deserves a whole separate story!

It is fun to play with her fear. I try to reflect on what it felt like to jump off of a moving ship and float on the sea, seeing how the ship disappeared in the distance.
Drones and machines really need their own story. I have scripted one, but I'm unsure how to place it in the world.
