Twylyte in the Graveyard
3D Render by CybOrSpasmMe: "Terra... TERRA! Calm down! You know I can't understand you guys when you talk like that!"
Terra: "Stranger in the woods!" She finally managed to get across coherently.
Me: "So.... Other people are allowed to be in the woods..."
Terra: "No no no no no! Dark pixie!" She said.
Her wings were a whining blur as she flitted in figure eights in front of me.
It finally began to dawn on me what I was seeing. Terra was very agitated...
I had only seen her like this perhaps once or twice in all the years she has been with me.
The fact that she had described the intruder as a "dark pixie" hadn't registered yet.
Me: "Okay, okay... Lets go see what has you in such a tizzy..."
Now where I live has a lot of wooded areas. Not so much now that we humans are forever cutting it down and paving it over. However, patches still survive here and there, usually to divide one neighborhood from the next, or in some cases, to avoid digging up small graveyards that sometimes date back a hundred years or more.
Behind our house is one such little patch. There is a small pond there as well, and during the warmer months, you can hardly see the other houses through the trees and leaves.
This is actually the spot where I first found Terra many years ago, but that is another story.
To the west of the pond, hidden by the trees, bushes, and undergrowth, is one such little graveyard. Only four or five of its crumbling and weather worn gravestones still stand. The engravings so warn away as to be unreadable now, and is actually a pleasant and peaceful spot... At least on days when the neighbors aren't out cutting grass, or putting on a new roof etc...
Anyways, as I came up the barley visible path, I saw the cause of Terra's concern. Crouched atop one of the remaining grave markers was a most unusual pixie!
Me: "Umm... Twylyte? Is that you?"
Terra: "It is Twylyte!" Exclaimed Terra.
Terra: "Why you not tell me you was Twylyte?!?" Terra scolded.
She started forward towards the newcomer, but stopped well short when Twylyte sounded a warning buzz!
Terra: "Twylyte! It's me... Terra! We friends with you, remember?" Terra explained.
There was a cautious chirp from Twylyte.
Terra landed on a neighboring stone, and suddenly gone was Terra the excitable pixie. She stood straight and tall, chin lifted. Suddenly, she was Terra, Queen and warrior of the local pixies! (Well, perhaps queen is not accurate... Most definitely their leader, but more like a den mother than queen.)
She gave a new authoritative chirp of her own.
Twylyte then stood as well, and matched Terra stance perfectly.
Both pixies rose into the air together.
Tera's wings a hypersonic whine, while Twylyte's were more like a high speed bat.
They met face to face, and grasped each others forearms in a very ritualistic manner.
A few chirps later, and everything seemed to be settled.
Terra: "Twylyte wants to know, can she be welcome to come stay with us for a while." Interpreted Terra.
Me: "Hunh? Oh ya, of course she's welcome. She is one of our gang after all, and can come and go anytime she pleases... Anytime!" I floundered, still a bit confused as to what just happened.
Me: "Besides, she looks like she needs a umm... bath..."
So back to the house we went.
For those few who might be interested, here's a little background on Twylyte:
First off, let's address the elephant in the room. Twylyte is a very rare breed of pixie know as a Gloaming Pixie.
"The gloamin'" refers to the hours between sunset, and night. It can also refer to the dawn hours leading up to sunrise.
Also call dusk or twilight, this is also where Twylyte got her name obviously, and is also when this type of pixie is most active.
The Gloamin' Pixies are very very uncommon, and even more rarely seen, especially since they prefer to be active in the darker hours. They prefer to live in old hollow trees, especially old dead trees with the hollows and holes forming faces. People will sometime talk about "haunted trees" that moan in the night... Yup, gloamin pixies having a laugh...
They have bat like wings instead of the insect ones of more common pixies. Their "horns" are rigid and are not used to convey emotions like the other pixies, although the tips do change color according to mood.
They have red eyes, an adaptation that seems to help them see better in low light environments, and can scare the living daylights out of you to see them glowing in the dark! (Yes, I speak from experience when Twylyte lived with us many years ago!)
Oh, she also has a scary ass set of fangs...
Basically, the gloamin' pixies are the goth girls of the pixie world. They prefer black or dark clothes (when they wear any at all...), and will often "dirty" themselves up to provide better camouflage as Twylyte has done here.
Their humor is also a bit on the morbid side, which is why they don't always get along with their more mainstream pixie neighbors.
(This was evidenced one morning when I woke up looking into the empty eye sockets of a cat skull on my pillow...)
Despite the fangs, they are fairly omnivorous like most pixies. Seem to speak a similar language etc...
So.... basically night pixies on goth juice!
Back to the story...
Once we got back to the house, we got Twylyte cleaned up, and sat down to "talk".
Twylyte can speak quite clearly when she wants to, although like all pixies she has to slow waaaay down and deepen her voice as much as she can. Otherwise, all pixies sound like The Chipmunks on helium... and sped up like an old 33 record played at 78 speed! When they get excited, it can literally come out so fast, it sounds like a chirp...
With Terra helping to interpret when needed, I finally got most of the story.
Twylyte live with me and the other pixies years ago, when she had a run in with her own tribes leader. She was still quite young and the older gloamin's wouldn't listen to her, and when she challenged the leader for position, she lost...
Construction and human expansion were putting the squeeze on the gloamins' (and all pixies') territories, and Twylyte wanted them to relocate. The older pixies were set in their ways and traditions, and would not move without the leaders orders.
So, Twylite was banished from her tribe, and after Terra befriended her, she came to stay with us for a while.
Suddenly, one night, she left. We hadn't seen her for quite a few years.
Seems that she had gone scouting for a new area for her tribe to live in. The years of living with us as well as on her own had taught her a lot that her old leader had no knowledge of...
Oh, and watching old kung-fu and martial art movies with Terra and the gang helped she says.
In any even, she finally went back to her old tribe, challenged the leader again, and this time won resoundingly!
She moved her tribe to a new area as far from people as she could, then appointed a new leader and left to come back here.
Seems her time with us kinda spoiled her, what with pizza and popcorn parties, movies night on the laptop, etc...
Terra: "Oh, and she says there is two more gloamin's out in the woods that came with her, and could they also come to live with us?"
Terra: I says her that hell yes they can... if you says yes..." Terra added, pointedly not looking at me.
Three new pixies in the house... Three new Gloamin' pixies...
Sure, what could go wrong?
Sigh!
I have lived with pixies long enough to know what to do...
Me: "Welcome aboard once again Twylyte, and congratulations on becoming a leader among your people!" I stated as officially as possible.
I even shook her hand with my pinky, then stated, "The two who come with you are also welcome, however, they are to be your responsibility!"
"You in turn, are Terra's responsibility, as she is leader of all pixies in our tribe, understood?" I stated, trying to look as stern as possible.
A solemn nod was returned.
Me: "Okay then... who's up for pizza and a movie?"
All hell broke loose... What can you expect with a house full of pixies?
Terra: "Stranger in the woods!" She finally managed to get across coherently.

Fri, Apr 11HAHA! Well Oliver, only if you're a very good boy!
I am gradually bring my library of renders over too Renderhub.
I have about 250 over on ArtUntamed right now, but some of those are exclusive...
The problem with R.H. is that there are so very few like you who will take the time to read and comment.
Many of my render/stories happened because of the continued dialog in the comments...
Anyways, I thank you for being one of the few! I appreciate it!
