Amber Bead Modeling Practice
3D Render by undeadcrabbMy aim here was to recreate the amber material based on personal observations(my home region was historically known as part of the Amber coast, needless to say, we still have it abundant) in a way that captures its depth all the while using minimal geometry. Part of the beauty of the amber stone are the little imperfections, the minuscule cracks and bubbles that give it its sparkle, the bit of discoloration and at times the oh so flawed surface. I hope you like it, and please share your opinions on how it turned out.

The result is very interesting.
Is it an Iray shader you created to create this realistic effect?

Such an amazing result!
I remember, when there was still a lot of amber to find at the beaches of the northern sea, but those days are gone for long
But happy for you, that you still can go and collect this beautiful stone.
I was on a market in Riga, when I was there for some days vacation, so many stands filled with amber jewelry and many other things. Even though I thought, that the prices were ridiculous, but then again, tourist prices

Sun, Jul 20We barely can find it, and what we used to have has been mostly taken by, I guess you can call them, colonizers. That said, amber in market is not the most reliable source since you can't confirm where they get it. It's best to go into shops outside of old town Riga. So other areas, shops and so on. A good rule of thumb is this - raw shaped amber is cheapest. Especially if small in size. If the amber is shaped that means a lot of the material has been shaved from bigger stones so they will cost way more. And anything that has sterling silver on it is gonna triple in price.

Sun, Jul 20I'm sorry to read that, I thought, that there is still enough, since you wrote you still have it abundant.
I wish I could visit Riga again, but it don't look like it for the near future. I was there, hoping to visit the art museum. Unfortunately it was closed due to renovations.
Heaven help, I just checked on one of the photos, it was in 2014, where is the time gone?

Sun, Jul 20Yeah that sucks. But I think Riga barely scratches anything compared to what the rest of the country has to offer. Sigulda is much more rich in culture. But the national park there is the best part. Then there are the wetlands, the cliffs. I'm sure you have it in Norway too though. That and the mountains and the fjords - which we flatlanders don't. T_T But at least 10 percent of our land is wetlands. And we got beavers. And potatoes. *sigh*
That looks very convincing and quite lovely. The subtle darker colored veils and the bubbles really do capture the sense of the material well. Amber is a fascinating material to me since no two pieces are the same because of the various inclusions but especially because it is so unexpectedly light weight for whatever size it is (which is great for making statement art jewelry!).
