As far as I know, it's representing a bridge between the earthly and spiritual realms. But I think, the cultural influence has a big part as well, how one interprets it.

Yes it's the bridge between two worlds. In Deckard's case the bridge between his perception of reality (life) and the trans human truth of his own AI. He is dreaming of his reality but as he wakes returns to believing he is human.

Was Deckard deliberately set up ? he was retired as a blade runner at the beginning of the movie but was threatened with arrest if he did not return to his role as a hunter of replicants. Being Introduced to Rachel was deliberate, essential to his development as he starts to feel empathy with his victims. Does he even have a past or are all his memories false. Perhaps this is his first ever case and he was a brand new next generation android much like Rachel and they were pushed together deliberately to conceive the first android baby. Quite possibly this was an undertone in the story giving it far greater symbology and depth.
